Rock Around the Croc: Dmitri Shostakovich

Happy Sunday, you wonderful star children of a benevolent universe. It’s time once again to listen to some great music. We continue with an exploration of 20th Century Modernism, and today we feature the Soviet-era composer Dmitri Shostakovich. I’ll let this guy introduce his Fugue in A Major, and explain why it’s not only strikingly pretty but also an amazing example of constrained writing. The history lesson at the end is cool, too.

“There’s some speculation that since Shostakovich couldn’t publicly criticize Stalin’s regime, that he chose his dissonance in his music as a sort of subtle, rebellious, wordless way to criticize the government.” Neat.

Rock Around the Croc: Jean Sibelius Again

Welcome back to Rock Around the Croc, a musical series in which I do some research and then write comments about composers and pretend I knew it all along. I am you host Sobek, and this week we are listening to some more music by Finnish modernist composer Jean Sibelius, because last week there was no way to cover everything I wanted to cover.
