Welcome to another edition of Hunky Hump Day. Let’s get started.
**looks around for Wiserbud** I didn’t know the David Lee Roth version was a cover. Acktually, this is a cover, too, of two songs but arranged together for the first time.

Now for the hunks.

I think this is Luke Evans.

He posts on Instagram

a lot of poses

and yeah, he plays for the other team.

Last, but not least, Steve Backshall.

Thanks to Pirate’s Cove for the linky love every week, and y’all have a good day.

This was linked at AoS recently

    https://capitalresearch.org/article/the-groups-and-persons-mentioned-in-times-shadow-campaign-article/

I didn’t read it word by word but just skimmed through the groups and people listed. It always strikes me that we don’t have the multitudes of advocacy groups for conservative ideas that the commies have. And the so called conservative groups are pushing lefty ideas anyway.

    Sad

    wakey wakey

I finally finished “Sense and Sensibility” (oof, what a slog) and am now reading “The Anti-Mary Exposed: Rescuing the Culture from Toxic Femininity” for Lent. Much more interesting read and quite a change, to go from Regency proper manners and quiet pining to Madonna and Beyonce and WAP.

Sense and Sensibility is really only for hardcore Austen fans. I love it, of course.

Which model of those headphones do you have Carin? I looked them up and they seem like a toy I’d purchase for either me or Paula. Do they have occasional sales?

  10. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 8:11 am

I’m asking because last night Paula asked me if I had given any thought to her birthday present (which is 6 weeks away). That tells me she knows exactly what she’d like to be “surprised” with on her birthday.

  12. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 8:20 am

    From the WSJ Markets newsletter

” Money managers are lobbying to scrap a Trump-era rule that makes it difficult for 401(k) plans to invest in socially focused funds.

The Labor Department rule, announced in October, imposed restrictions on what can and can’t be offered as company 401(k) funds. One result is that plans can’t use funds with nonfinancial goals as default investments for employees.

That means 401(k) overseers and managers need to show that environmental, social and governance strategies can boost financial returns—a challenge for the nascent industry. ESG-focused funds are a growing profit center for asset managers.”
    ——–
So if you feel good about not making as much profit as you potentially could have in a different fund that’s OK. When employees realize they’ve been shafted who will they sue?

  13. Comment by Car in on March 3, 2021 8:21 am

I’ve never seen them on sale. I have the cheaper version, and they work fine. I have no idea what the more expensive ones do – lol, but I assume they’re better? They are nice because you can listen, but still hear the world around you. Which is good for running, or if you’re doing stuff around the house and need to hear shit too.

This comment is by a youngish woman:

“That’s why I signed up for Planet Fitness, because as a nightshifter I really love going to the gym at 0100. Like it’s my favorite time. And then the pandemic hit and now Texas has rescinded the mask mandate so I guess I’ll be working out at home for a while longer. ☹️☹️”

People have gone insane. They really have. The fear has gotten so deep inside them.

  18. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 8:33 am

Yeah, Raycon advertises a sale so often I’m sure that anyone who pays full price is marked as a sucker. I might get her a set if she doesn’t put more hints out there in the next week or two.

  19. Comment by leoncaruthers on March 3, 2021 8:37 am

It’s a mystery religion, Car in. It has rituals of preparation and cleansing, cult leaders, and faith-signalling attire.

  20. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 8:38 am

The predictions of Armageddon if the masks come off reminds me of the predictions of the Wild West times we were told would descend upon Maine before LePage signed constitutional carry into law several years ago.

*whispers “they didn’t come and it’s been years”

The Isaac Arthur podcast debuts every Thursday and sometimes has Raycon as a sponsor with a discount code, usually 10-20%.

  22. Comment by leoncaruthers on March 3, 2021 8:40 am

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.”

Wild West gun violence and super-spreader fatalities are at the top of the list, right below right-wing white supremacy terrorism.

  23. Comment by Car in on March 3, 2021 8:44 am

Yesterday, I was at the store – and I finally decided I’d had enough. I’m not wearing that fucking mask anymore. It will be on my face as I walk through the door (i’m not having conversations with the greeters every time) , then off it comes. Yes, I have to wear it for work – but honestly we’re not following any of the rules in that regard. I want a mask that says “theater” on it. I told Lucky (the owner – he owns like 9 in total) that the other main/similar restaurant in town when full capacity last weekend. He wants to do it too.

  27. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 8:54 am

In this phase of my career I only visit the OR occasionally, maybe every couple of months to give advice to one of my colleagues who I’ve asked to operate on one of my kids. There’s one coming up soon and my nurse told me about the changes since I last visited. We have to wear an N95 mask and leave the room during airway management (ETT or LMA placement) and THEN wait 15 minutes for the air to circulate through the scrubbers before entering to work. Good Lord …

  28. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 9:05 am

I had to read either Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Prejudice for high school English class. I have zero recall of either plot which I just quickly skimmed online. Which tells me I probably bullshitted my way through the exam after half-assedly reading the book.

  29. Comment by MJ on March 3, 2021 9:08 am

“That means 401(k) overseers and managers need to show that environmental, social and governance strategies can boost financial returns—a challenge for the nascent industry. ESG-focused funds are a growing profit center for asset managers.”
    —–
This is a thinly veiled lie. GNDs area of expertise is in ESG and while this gives the impression that investing in ESG can boost returns, in actuality ESGs lag the market. However, because millennials are ‘virtuous’ they often asked to be invested in ESGs regardless of the opportunity cost. This explains the a ‘growing profit center for asset managers’. They are making money, you have an inefficient portfolio.

Oh look! We’re all going to die because of Covid

  30. Comment by leoncaruthers on March 3, 2021 9:17 am

There are a few of those on the other side, too. Christian funds that don’t invest in any ‘vice’ stocks or any companies that support Planned Parenthood and so on. They lag the market too, generally, but I get why people do these, what with Eternal Salvation and all.

Millennials are atheists at best, antitheists at worst, and have no eternity to look forward to. Signalling “virtue” with an investment portfolio in light of what ought to be a nihilistic worldview is textbook insanity, right up there with ‘ethical veganism’.

NAFTA and the UAW malfeasance were the deathknell. Did he also track the population loss? Detroit alone went from 2.5M to <700k.

  35. Comment by Car in on March 3, 2021 9:30 am

Probably Pride and Prejudice. No teacher would make someone read the other.

  36. Comment by Sobek on March 3, 2021 9:32 am

Car in, you ever read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? I loved that book so much.

  37. Comment by Sobek on March 3, 2021 9:33 am

The movie, too. Probably the single best example of an instance where I didn’t care that the movie deviated so much from the source material.

  38. Comment by Car in on March 3, 2021 9:35 am

I did, of course. I’ve read almost everything related to anything Austen wrote.

  39. Comment by Sobek on March 3, 2021 9:41 am

That’s a long list. The austen universe has to rival the MCU, and for similar reasons, namely the hordes of superfans.

  40. Comment by Sobek on March 3, 2021 9:41 am

I never read Sense and Sensibility and Sea Serpents. I wonder if it would be any good.

  41. Comment by Sobek on March 3, 2021 9:43 am

I’m still surprised that movie got made. The Venn diagram of people who like Jane Austen and zombie movies can’t possibly overlap that much.

  42. Comment by Car in on March 3, 2021 9:46 am

Well, I did drop off following it all a few years back, so maybe I should amend that statement. lol When they first started doing all the JA stuff, I was in heaven. Not just horror stuff, but they did alternate versions, after the end of the novel books too. One was rather porny. I don’t believe I finished that one.

  43. Comment by MJ on March 3, 2021 9:51 am

I really wish didn’t run off CoAlex.

I don’t get why devaluing currency boosts exports. I just can’t seem to think it through.

Today it’s 1:10. Tomorrow it’s 1:20. Why does that make the goods cheaper to import?

  44. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 3, 2021 9:52 am

I got a set of the DAK’s I had before (they are cheap, only $45, and sound great, good for a second set). I was looking into the bone conducting brand, and saw some cheap knockoffs. They appear to be heavier, or not as cool looking, so I’m ordering the Car in ones on her recommendation.

If they sound like crap, I’ll poop on her deck during Lapeerpalooza 3: Fuck Gretchen version

  45. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 3, 2021 9:53 am

    Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I couldn’t make it through that one, IIRC. Maybe I’m thinking of another similar. This is along the lines of Abraham Lincoln Vampire killer right?

  46. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 3, 2021 9:54 am

I never finished watching that. It was a while ago but the word that comes to mind when I think of the movie is “ponderous”.

  54. Comment by Car in on March 3, 2021 10:01 am

No, there was a mild dust up/political disagreement and Coalex kinda … well, that’s where FPOS comes from.

I think he was just really on edge about stuff/moving/job. That he went “there” I think disturbed him and he figured he needed a break.

Pretty sure I have the general gist of it.

  55. Comment by Jimbro on March 3, 2021 10:02 am

WRT to Luke, he is in one of my favorite underrated movies, Dracula Untold in the title role. He didn’t come across as gay at all, even pulled off paternal affection well, so he’s a decent actor. There are a couple of moments where you see the inside of his hands, and they are calloused as heck. Whether he’s on the juice or not, he was clearly putting in the work for the physique.

I sent Herr something for new fathers since he was one at the time. I don’t remember now what it was. Cathy was too long ago, no recollection. I’m having a pretty large sum of money refunded to my credit card from an airline because they wouldn’t let me travel last spring and I’m tired of waiting on shit to open back up. So I call my credit card company this morning to make sure they know it’s incoming and not to fuck it up. The account number is different now than it was then due to it getting hacked.

I got through to a live human being inside of 5 minutes. And she actually knew what the fuck she was doing. It was amazing. I know y’all probably think I’m making this shit up but I’m for real.

Paula had a phone fuck around with FedEx the other day. Package was addressed to our PO box rather than the street address. She called the number they gave to change the address and couldn’t get by the phone menu without being told to contact the shipper. Shipper is in Japan. Finally after a few go arounds she entered that she was the shipper on the menu and got to talk to a representative who probably resides in a former portion of the British Empire. Everything was all set within 5 minutes.

My favorite Jane Austin novel is Persuasion. Pride and Prejudice comes next. Though if I had seen the movie version cast with Keira Knightly first, I would have hated it. Thar cast sucked donkey balls.. BBC movie versions are the best and stick closest to the books.
I like Sense and Sensibility but don’t care for that cast either.

I’ve read Pride and Prejudice at least 2 times if not 3. Read Sense and Sensibility once. I like the movies. That idiot, Hugh Grant was very likable in it and conveyed a bumbling, likable fool really well.

The BBC Persuasion is excellent. The tension…my goodness.

Although all the BBC Austin movies are excellent.

From a WSJ article about the drive to unionize Amazon:

“The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union filed in November to represent more than 5,000 workers at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer. Democrats badly want a victory against the retail and tech giant.

“It will be a shot heard around the world,” tweeted Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose staff supplied pizzas to warehouse organizers last month. Earlier he said that “Mr. [CEO Jeff ] Bezos, the wealthiest person in America, must not interfere in this election.”
    ———-
Amazon can’t catch a break from the left or the right. They’re cancelling conservatives and progressives want them to share the wealth. I don’t have much sympathy for them. My business with Amazon has nosedived since the Parler debacle. Walmart, eBay and individual companies are seeing the benefit. It takes a few more clicks but it’s not like I’m suffering.

I, too, love everything Austen, but the two big hollywood versions aren’t my favorite. There is a new version of Emma and I just adored it. It had a quirk to it that I liked.

Plus – when they try to hire Hollywood beauties to some of these roles, they don’t fit. I hated Gwynth Paltrow and didn’t care for the Keira version either.

I liked the BBC mini-series for Pride and Prejudice, mainly because of Colin Firth. I thought Hugh Grant would have made a better Willoughby in S&S, but then I just see Hugh Grant, not the part he’s trying to play.

I don’t get why devaluing currency boosts exports. I just can’t seem to think it through.

Today it’s 1:10. Tomorrow it’s 1:20. Why does that make the goods cheaper to import?

If the exchange rate is 1 dollar for 100 yen, and you can buy a good either for a dollar domestically, or for 100 yen overseas (ignoring any costs for shipping, etc.), then shifting the exchange rate to 1:200 means that effectively you lower the price of the foreign good by half (since you can still buy it for 100 yen, but you can now get twice the yen for your same dollar).

Old, still holding rule is that if I get caught not wearing a mask, not only do I face disciplinary action, but any task I’m on gets halted, and they have to go through the approval process again. I’m on four tasks, so all four would be cancelled. Well, it’s Texas, so it was 70° today. And, being Texans, everything is pretty much back to normal. Plumbers are overworked, but everyone’s electricity is up and running, and now we are looking forward to disposing our masks – at least those of us over a certain age. What is it that you do, exactly?
Why can’t you get help to do it?
Not enough talented people, or not enough money to get enough talented people?
I only ask because I’ve been able to do all kinds of stuff that I’m neither trained for or talented enough to do, if given enough incentive.
For instance, maintain the world wide VTAM config of a fortune 100 company with no training in VTAM.

But then, I’m “A very good driver”, if you know what I’m sayin’…

I was a Honeywell guy in a company transitioning to IBM. I was doing sys-gens every weekend for a bunch of 3725s, routing and path tables. They always worked. It took me two years to get them to send me to VTAM class. I could have taught it…

Chris, I work at a DOE national lab doing research. I’m currently working on high temperature electrolyzers(they run at 750°C or 1400°F) . They are a mix of ceramic and metal and finicky as hell. The metal needs special coatings, the ceramics are both structural and electrical. You’re pushing the limits of many of the material and it’s as much black art as science. I need materials engineers and good techs. If I hire someone who knows the technical it’ll take them a year to understand how to do anything in our bureaucratic lab. It’s also getting the techs trained and finding good ones that will learn on their own. We have plenty of money, it just finding the good people.

I’m typically a “driver” too and know exactly what you are saying. Most of the things I know are from me figuring out how to make it work. I have a rep as some who gets stuff done. However right now I have to be the driver and figure out the tech problems and design the next iteration and deal with the marketing people trying to sell more programs. 20 years ago we had a team of 25 doing this work. I’m one of the few left doing the work, most everyone else has moved on to other things or left.

I was very fortunate on the house. I payed the least of anyone in the neighborhood and it appraised for more than I offered. Of all the comparables it had no upgrades but I am handy and have many plans to upgrade it.

    Vmax,

We’re government contractors not a GOGO. The area I’m in is quite republican, but your right the state is heading the same direction as California. It’s a real shame since the weather is real nice, I like my house and I have a great golf course and good friends here. However I’ll need to retire somewhere else. However I’m payed quite well and I’ll have a 30 years on my pension by the time I’m retired. So I’m staying for the time being.

I told my sister my thoughts on Jane Eyre and she scrunched up her face. Fair enough. She’s still my favorite sister.

I liked Jane Eyre a lot too. My husband just finished it. He’s reading all the classics.

    Sobek…great skit.

    Unfortunately 100% true.

Finally got around to reading that long article Hotspur linked yesterday and agree it was well worth the time to read it

    https://thenationalpulse.com/analysis/the-increasingly-secret-history-of-the-racist-democrats-and-how-senile-boomer-biden-heralds-the-end/

    Learned a new word: desuetude

    https://www.yourdictionary.com/desuetude

Doubt I’ll be using it and if it took 56 years for me to finally read it in a sentence I doubt I’ll recognize it in the unlikely event I encounter it again.

  204. Comment by Jimbro on March 4, 2021 6:27 am

I ought to tackle Jane Eyre again. Unfortunately rereading the classics gets sidelined by zombie adventure time.

  206. Comment by Car in on March 4, 2021 7:55 am

Aside from both having the name “Jane” (one in the author’s name, and the other in the title of a book) – and writing w/in 50 years of each other, there really is no reason for the books/authors to be compared. Austen has much more HUMOR in her writing and certainly wrote/published more. Aside from Eyre – people don’t really read any of her other books.

I love Jane Eyre and read it before I read any Austen books. And I’ve re-read it many times (and seen every movie version). But it’s HEAVY. The Gothic influences make her and her sister’s major novels a tad dark.

  207. Comment by Car in on March 4, 2021 7:57 am

I was a Honeywell guy in a company transitioning to IBM.

Chrisp, I worked with a Bull mainframe, which is downstream from Honeywell, IIRC. We transitioned to .Net cobol on a server, so everything is in Visual Studio now. Much nicer than COBOL debuggers on a mainframe (read: notepad and text files)

  221. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 4, 2021 9:05 am

we have dev and staging (user acceptance). We can’t use them, because none of the developers can comprehend data state and restore points, so I do all my development locally. Have a big ole SQL server instance on a 1 TB SSD on a laptop that runs faster than the production server.

  222. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 4, 2021 9:06 am

so music is what you’re calling it now. Ok then.

  223. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 4, 2021 9:06 am

I just like posted code talk to make everyone go glassy eyed in here.

  224. Comment by leoncaruthers on March 4, 2021 9:10 am

I don’t get to write code anymore. If development is happening on my current project, I’m unaware of it. I’m so out of practice that I bombed a HackerRank screener for a second interview last time I made the attempt. I’ve been forced into the role of elasticsearch SME, a role I have been saying we needed to hire someone to fill for… has to be 8 years. I emphatically said I did not want the job, but we needed someone in it.

If I fail the certification exam, I’m retiring.

  225. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 4, 2021 9:12 am

I wouldn’t pass a screening interview like that, don’t have the background. What I have is the ability to find the place where the error is, and track down what is causing it. I’m useful to my company, probably wouldn’t immediately present as useful to another company, which is why I don’t look for a new job.

I’m terrified of the interview, youngsters have a lot of code ability, but hardly any real world experience with systems of computers.

  226. Comment by Car in on March 4, 2021 9:13 am

Roamy, I totally understand why you need to wear a mask and I’m not saying that people should risk their jobs. Play along. I have to wear a face diaper at work.

  227. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 4, 2021 9:15 am

I understand too, roamy. I have to wear one when I’m not at my desk.

  228. Comment by Car in on March 4, 2021 9:17 am

But where I’m not forced, I will not comply.

  229. Comment by leoncaruthers on March 4, 2021 9:18 am

I’m terrified of the interview, youngsters have a lot of code ability, but hardly any real world experience with systems of computers.

I don’t fear the interview, I’m amiable and able to put on the mask of “fun coworker who seems smart enough to be here” easily enough, but I’ve lost all patience for toy problems that would be full-sprint programming efforts being presented as 6 of 9 things to do in a 3 hour test that only a recently-graduated autist can do. That’s not what most days on any coding project look like, it’s just a shitty test of whether someone can do the job, but it’s all they have.

  230. Comment by Jimbro on March 4, 2021 9:18 am

The mask wearing is performance theater. My mask is on and off countless times a day in the office and when I’m talking and it moves up to get near my eyes I constantly readjust it. When I put my glasses down off my head I slip the mask down lower so they don’t fog up. My “disposable” mask is a week or two old because the ones they have for us are uncomfortable and I rely on the ones at the grocery store.

  231. Comment by Jimbro on March 4, 2021 9:20 am

In the operating room it’s a fresh mask for each case and I’d tape the upper part of my mask to keep my glasses from fogging up.

  232. Comment by leoncaruthers on March 4, 2021 9:20 am

To clarify, I don’t believe it’s a good test of whether one can do the job of writing code to solve real problems in a consistent fashion. By and large, tests like these are disguised IQ tests or tests of whether you’ve solved a particular edge-case combinatorics problem before.

  233. Comment by Jay in Ames on March 4, 2021 9:21 am

oh goody, meeting about the blowup yesterday. time to find out how wrong I am, and how shitty my attitude is, expecting others to do their job and not liking when they don’t follow established policies, no matter how simple.
