HHD

Welcome to another edition of Hunky Hump Day. Let’s get started.

So while Mr. RFH was off playing D&D for the third time in a week, I watched “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. It was definitely a slow artsy movie, and Colin Firth was artistically rumpled rather than fun to watch. This guy played the butcher’s son and other love interest for Scarlett Johansson.

Now for the other hunks.

Some of the American Ninja Warriors.

Last, but not least.

Thanks to Pirate’s Cove for the linky love every week, and y’all have a good day.

I have never played D&D. A few friends had a brief fling with it but it was soon replaced by drinking beer around bonfires at pit parties. I was in my 40’s before I had confirmation of what D20 meant.

Sorry to hear the news on your friend’s son Jam. Is it Ewing’s or osteogenic sarcoma or other? Any one of them sucks.

Worked with a Family Practice resident this week and after a crazy busy Monday and more sane Tuesday finally had time to chat with her. She seemed more confident than the average resident who passes through and I discovered that not only is she a veteran (Army, Engineer Corps, 5 years active duty, made it to Afghanistan) but has 3 kids under 5 years old. It was humorous to hear her “Let things burn down all around her” approach to life when my nurse asked her all the usual mom questions. Pale ginger from Minnesota with a sense of humor.

WSJ article about the new Black News Channel. Interesting concept in these “You ain’t black” times. Will it be informed and neutral or just parrot Dem talking points? If it’s the latter it will be on life support before too long. If it’s just a liberal advocate network they’re peaking at the wrong time. With an election 2 years away the chance to grab money from donors to sway votes is too distant.

  13. Comment by Brother Tim on February 24, 2021 8:25 am

They’re setting up their grift to capitalize on the trend. Honestly I consider it a warning sign at this stage, we’re going full Zimbabwe (or that’s the strategy in play, anyway).

  14. Comment by Jimbro on February 24, 2021 8:26 am

She told me a few stories about her deployment and her role as an officer. The fraud and waste involved with a project where she had to move storage containers all over the country that weren’t really needed where they were. She said “If you really want to see wasted effort and money put the government in charge of something”. We only get a brief time with the residents so I won’t get a chance to talk to her about Covid stuff. My disdain for wearing a mask and putting Rush’s show on my office radio probably gave my perspective away.

Who is the guy in the last HHD pic?

  21. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 8:54 am

    The VA project:

2 years ago the DC VA employees (15,000) complained that HR support sucked. The sec of the VA told them fine, we’ll move your HR services to the field. 300+ DC VA HR support colleagues found other positions so no one was fired. 300 people were hired in the field to support DC.

The DC VA employees complained again. They want their local service back. So we’re going to move it all back to DC, hire 300 more colleagues and spend a few million to ‘study’ how to do it.

A discerning individual might understand that we already know how to do it. In fact, we were doing it just 2 years ago. But that’s immaterial.

The end result will be to go back to the way things were with an additional 900 employees somewhere floating around that at one point or another were servicing the DC VA employees.

    This is government at work.

The people doing the project are consultants because the actual VA employees don’t know how to do it. They actually said to their bosses, ‘we don’t know how to do what we were doing just 2 years ago so I need a few million dollars to hire someone to do my job for me.’

And it works. They get the money, hire consultants to do their job, and spend their time on more important things like getting a PhD in Human Capital Relations so they can move from a G14 to a G15 position. At that point, they’ll get a PMP or LSSMBB so they can move from a G15II to a G15III.

Conclusion: The job of a government employee in the VA is to move up a pay ladder. The actual job will be done by someone else.

My last day is tomorrow. I now understand how Obama felt when he he explained he was working behind enemy lines at a private law firm.

But I never ate a dog.

  22. Comment by Jay in Ames on February 24, 2021 9:00 am

Anyway, back to reading the BiW postlet..

  23. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 9:09 am

The knowledge of eating the dog is important, you FPOJ.

    He did it willingly.

  24. Comment by leoncaruthers on February 24, 2021 9:12 am

DHS contracting is a lot like DOD contracting, in that the government employees are tasked with using products and systems, but not their construction nor maintenance. The latter actions are reserved to contractors. I supply analysts with tools or maintain their tools, but they are generally skilled operators and can comment intelligently about their mission, if not the exact set of python libs that facilitate it. It’s a better relationship, and I imagine generally a better set of folks altogether. We have consequences for failure, as do they, which makes a huge difference.

I imagine the VA is a lot like the NIH, where one can only be fired for failure at politics. Fauci is the apotheosis of bureaucratic parasite, an exemplar for government employment in the consequence-free segments.

  25. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 9:18 am

    The VA is sad overall.

There might be a good way to use some of the facilities and infrastructure for the mentally ill but the likelihood of doing anything different is basically zero.

  26. Comment by Jay in Ames on February 24, 2021 9:26 am

it’s the only way government can run. They have layers of responsibility and knowledge that is usually handled by a single person, but everyone has to be responsible for something.

In small business, this is taken care of by economic factors. At least it used to be.

  27. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 9:28 am

I see some parallels. The VA people are knowledgable but lack the skills to do much of anything other than follow processes. Thinking is a bit of a stretch. I’m not being a dick, just honest.

It’s pretty obvious people are just sort of warehoused in jobs doing very little. Not a joke, we’ll have 50+ people on a weekly meeting and there will be zero questions. Not one person will put in the effort to think about what is being presented. It’s just, ‘great job, everyone is fantastic, keep up the good work’.

  28. Comment by Jay in Ames on February 24, 2021 9:30 am

^ the reason I hate meetings. Just means more work for me, who actually does work, and understands what is going on.

Sometimes the people aren’t speaking up in meetings, because we don’t want to increase our workload.

  29. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 9:35 am

Yep, totally agreed. I just seem to think anytime you have 50 people together someone might have something to add.

Nope. It’s just Shoronda and LaPrincess thanking everyone saying good morning.

Hey, Jay. Yeah I hear any fool can do a podcast now.

Leon, super stupid simple on my end. I use a rodecaster pro soundboard which records to internal memory or an sd card. I then send it over to my MacBook Pro for editing in GarageBand.

  45. Comment by leoncaruthers on February 24, 2021 12:13 pm

Ah, no Macs here, so I’m probably going with Audacity for editing. What do you use for VoIP? I’m looking at Mumble/Murmur.

  46. Comment by bcochran81 on February 24, 2021 12:32 pm

I’ve used Audacity a bit. It’s better than GarageBand for voice effects, IMO. We did a thing way back when where I made AtC’s voice sound fairly Darth Vaderish. That was audacity. It’s also good for combining/splitting mono/stereo tracks.

Hotspur, MJ didn’t mention it, but the employee/contractor blurring is also how .gov agencies get around the diversity quotas in many cases. Though there are contracts that mandate diversity on the prime as well.

    Thus, subcontractors.

  62. Comment by Hotspur on February 24, 2021 1:39 pm

Thanks, but I understand why it happens.

Someone would have to grow the balls to stand up and say, “These diversity quotas are swelling our ranks with people we hired only because of their gender/color, not because of their competence. And since we are now filled with people who can’t get the job done because they have no skills or competence, we have to pay twice to hire a subcontractor to do it instead.”

They were in their car she got out of hers. They couldn’t have been that threatening.

Hollywood told her that she could take both of them without breaking a sweat or a nail.

  115. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 5:42 pm

    More Hunter Biden please.

I absolutely loved how Joe would pretend everyone was taking a shot at the dead one when they brought up Hunter.

That’s a disciplined, soulless communication team. He mentions your crackhead son, you hoist the dead kid as a shield.

  116. Comment by MJ on February 24, 2021 5:44 pm

You’ve been paying James Biden for 40+ years. He was listed as a consultant to Joe Biden and paid 200K per year.

They talked on the phone once a week for about an hour.

And I am really grateful to be working for the best gov’t agency and not the VA.

I worked on The Project That Must Not Be Named, a solar sail, a “small business innovative research” coating, radiation shielding, and SLS. Just today. It was a busy day in the lab, and two co-workers covered one meeting each so that I could focus on that. Both meetings dealt with TPTMNBN, where I’m pretty sure the contractor has hired for diversity and not competence, and we’re paying the price.

Haircut today, this pandemic has left me a little shaggy at times. I’m used to the good old drop-in-and-wait-for-an-open-chair model of barbershop service but now you have to make an appointment like a bitch.

  131. Comment by lumps on February 25, 2021 7:26 am

My hair is shoulder-length right now and I hate it. Hasn’t been this long in years. I want my cute short do. As soon as Spring breaks I’m doing it myself if I have to.

Yea, I’ve got one more week until my next haircut.

I get mine cut about every 3-4- weeks.

  134. Comment by Jimbro on February 25, 2021 8:11 am

I aim for 4-5 weeks in between. I like it short enough that I can just use one hand to “style” it. Style, as in, look in the mirror and move my hand from back to front to push the spikes down and go on with my day.

Best buddy sees no problem with supporting Disney+ even after the Carano problem. He’s allowed himself to be blinded by what’s happening. I can’t talk him out of it. They’ll come for him and his dad before he sees the truth.

I’m officially out of fleshspace folks in my area I can really depend upon when the inevitable happens. Oddly this doesn’t bother me as much as it probably should.

I’ve really stopped shaving as frequently in the last couple of years. I’ve never been a fan of shaving but at the same time I’m not a beard fan. I had the stylish Van Dyke look in the Grunge Era along with half of my male peers but other than a half-assed No Shave November beard I shave my face every few days but need to daily.

  149. Comment by Jay in Ames on February 25, 2021 8:54 am

Scott’s latest lumper that he had such high hopes for, has turned out to be unreliable as all the rest. So he took me to work with him again, twice now on my vacation week. This is like a nightmare. I’m going to need a hearty lunch at a pretty nice restaurant to heal these scars.

  151. Comment by Jimbro on February 25, 2021 8:57 am

I feel fortunate that the style of my 20’s, when I gave a shit about such things, was flannel shirts, t-shirts, jeans and van dyke beards. Except for the beard I’m in the same uniform now.

Thankfully I never wore hammer pants, JNKO (?) jeans or had a man bun

The one time in my life I used a moving company I got to see their lumpers in Denver. It looked like their company van pulled up in front of a homeless shelter with a box of company t-shirts and if the shirt fit they were hired for the day.
