BBF

Greetings, my friends, and welcome to Big Boob Friday.  Normally, this weekly feature on dis here fine blawg includes some funny gifs, some odd history sometimes.  Mine’s going to try and get it right, but I’m prepared if it doesn’t.  So grab a mug of your favorite morning beverage and keep on scrolling, cats, so you can have a look.

July 21 in history!  No gifs, that stuff is a crapload of work.

1403 Henry IV defeats the Percys in the Battle of Shrewsbury in England.
1667 The Peace of Breda ends the Second Anglo-Dutch War and cedes Dutch New Amsterdam to the English.
1711 Russia and Turkey sign the Treaty of Pruth, ending the year-long Russo-Turkish War.
1718  The Treaty of Passarowitz is signed by Austria, Venice and the Ottoman Empire.
1773 Pope Clement XIV abolishes the Jesuit order.
1798 Napoleon Bonaparte defeats the Arab Mameluke warriors at the Battle of the Pyramids.
1861 In the first major battle of the Civil War, Confederate forces defeat the Union Army along Bull Run near Manassas Junction, Virginia. The battle becomes known as Manassas by the Confederates, while the Union calls it Bull Run.
1865 Wild Bill Hickok kills gunman Dave Tutt in Springfield, Missouri, in what is regarded as the first formal quick-draw duel.
1873 The James Gang robs a train in Adair, Iowa.
1896 Mary Church Terrell founds the National Association of Colored Women in Washington, D.C.
1906 French Captain Alfred Dreyfus is vindicated of his earlier court-martial for spying for Germany.
1919 The British House of Lords ratifies the Versailles Treaty.
1925 John Scopes is found guilty for teaching evolution in Dayton, Tenn., and is fined $100.
1941 France accepts Japan’s demand for military control of Indochina.
1944 U.S. Army and Marine forces land on Guam in the Marianas.
1954  The French sign an armistice with the Viet Minh that ends the war but divides Vietnam into two countries.
1960 Sirimavo Bandaranaike becomes the first woman prime minister of Ceylon.

Now today’s model has been here before and needs no introduction.  Pupster had a suggestion, but I decided to go with a classic.  Her measurements are just right-perfect-oh my, and she weighs slightly more than she’ll admit to but carries every ounce of it well.  Please to be welcoming back Miss Erica Campbell!

I just saw a bird fly into the porch windows. It’s outside sitting on my shallots that are drying on the table under the eaves. Stunned but not dead.

    Can’t miss with a classic.

Scott convinced me to throw away my last ‘taper off’ prednisone yesterday morning. Thank goodness. Finally got a good night’s sleep last night, after a week of miserable 3-hour naps. I feel like I could jump over the sun.

Leon, should I start low-carbing for a while before I do IF, or just dive right in? I read some commenter on Ace’s site that said it’s best to acclimate to fat burning in advance.

  8. Comment by Jay in Ames on July 22, 2016 8:37 am

Did MJ really get banned at AOS?

  9. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 22, 2016 8:40 am

LCHF first has worked better for me. I think it’s a gut flora thing. If I’m eating carbs regularly, hunger is a painful experience and it’s very hard to fast. If I’ve been in ketosis or even just low on carbs for a while, hunger is a completely different experience. I imagine it has something to do with the population of microorganisms that survive better on carbohydrates also being better at manipulating the gut-brain axis. After a few weeks low carb, they are much smaller in number. Just a hypothesis, though, to explain what many have seen anecdotally.

Also, I highly recommend this book. It’s a short read, the science is pretty good, and the explanation of and recommendation for salt intake made things really click for me. You don’t need any of the lab-test supplies they suggest to get a lot out of it. The “Living” book by the same authors is good too, but this helped a lot when I was on 0 carbs and still had to get workouts in or work on the farm.

  14. Comment by lauraw on July 22, 2016 9:05 am

Oooh, nice book recommendation. But I’m not an athlete or a lifter and probably never will be. Still useful?

  15. Comment by lauraw on July 22, 2016 9:09 am

    Never mind, bought it.

OK, gotta go do some shopping. Stim you later.

  16. Comment by Jay in Ames on July 22, 2016 9:13 am

That’s one thing about the hostages. If it’s a book they will buy it. Doesn’t matter if it’s useful or not.

  17. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 22, 2016 9:17 am

The other book for non-athletes is good, but the chapter on salt intake for activity was a clincher for me. ‘Living’ is also very science heavy – which has its place – but ‘Performance’ is much more of a practical manual, IMO.

  18. Comment by MJ on July 22, 2016 9:35 am

Yes, but it’s kind of funny.

  19. Comment by Tushar on July 22, 2016 9:51 am

I took the comprehensive quiz on isidewith.com

Apparently I am in 87% agreement with Trump, and 13% with Hillary.
I think that 13% came about because I said yes to ‘should nasa fund space travel’

I was not siding with Hillary, I was siding with Roamy and Mrs Peel.

What’s weird is that I think of myself as a protectionist, so I’m not sure how I ended up slightly globablist, and I answered a bunch of questions in favor of religious liberty and right to refuse service and it didn’t make the summary.

Yo. Just skimmed the last few threads. Seems I am on the same page as Her Humpiness.

I have pissed off Trump lovers and Trump haters. Was told twice yesterday that I am blinded by my hate of Hillary….’cause Trump is as bad as she is….he has the same traits….and IF he had the same positions of power, he too, would have just as many dead bodies in his wake and apparently secret servers, selling favors to foreign governments, etc etc.

Pick your poison. VD is treatable. Ebola, rarely so.One of them gets the Golden Ticket. Why let the worst of the lot have it? (that worst of the lot using every cheat tactic she can…..which has already begun with most likely democrat appointed judges throwing out Voter ID. Bet you can’t wait ’til she appoints more of them. Can’t wait ’til NeverTrumpers start bitching about gun bans and lefty judges.)

PC lives in the 17yr old sons room. When the subject was broached he became territorial (which I kinda understand ) and wasn’t openly supportive. So, when he went to work, I threw all his shit in the front yard, changed the locks and sent him a text telling him he was emancipated. Yeah I couldve waited til next year…..but kids are such a pain in the ass.

Though we really need to break the civil servant unions and get rid of some dead wood. Holy cow, it was sad today. Nebbish had a one-year tour of duty in my group. It ended in April, and we didn’t want to keep him. Jackhole liked to appear in my doorway at 2:30 and ask if he could help with anything. Sure, where were you at 8:00? He kept dragging ass on moving back to his original group and finally packed up this week. Two of the techs made up a song for the occasion.

I let my mom know my vacation dates about 2 months ago and she mentioned she’d like to visit when her sister came up and she half committed to this week. Other than a few phone calls and texts along the way to let her know how things are going we haven’t talked about her trip. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon just as I finished a case my phone rang with a text from my mom telling me she was picking her sister up at Logan in the morning and they were coming up after that. BAM! She’s actually a great guest and prefers to stay at a hotel rather than at the house. When my dad was alive they’d stay at a B+B in my town and now she’s staying in Orono which is one exit down from the camp road.

  166. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 23, 2016 7:45 am

  167. Comment by Jimbro on July 23, 2016 7:54 am

I should say she’s coming Sunday morning. She’ll probably stay a couple of days. The longer I live in Maine the less often I make the trip to MA. I think the combination of having my inherited family here with Paula and the boys keeping me busy, work obligations and the number of years since I lived down there all add up. Not to mention it’s a long ass drive to make on a whim. A group of my med school friends are making a road trip next weekend. Five of them all from MA. I’ll splurge for some good scotch and a box of decent cigars.

And they are always like “well you have insurance”. I keep telling them things are so tight it is extremely difficult to pay my 20%. Its like they don’t get it. Then they hand me a 47 page application where I’m supposed to itemize all my expenses and attach my last tax forms inorder to recieve charity that I don’t want to begin with.

I’ve decided I’m not going to see end stage of nothing. Once diagnosed as terminal, I’m going to stock pile the narcotics, throw one last party and then I’m going to check out. Not going to put the family through that cost / care wise.

Ribs are smoking. Trying a new method to cook low and slow, not sure if it will work with my grill, seems like I have it too hot or not hot enough, there is no in-between. I stacked the charcoal in a “C” around the edge of the tray, and it is working, but it is not getting hot enough to cook the meat, just smoking it slow. I’ll let it go for an hour with the lid down and see if I get any heat. I don’t have a lot of patience for this stuff. I want ribs now.

Have three rum and cokes and add a couple of dry logs to the fire.

We’re hosting Paula’s friends today. They’re regular visitors who I find tolerable at best. There’s too many stories to tell to give you the full picture so I won’t even begin. I’m just in a corner enjoying a cigar and beginning a book. Trying to decide on either WOOL or Cheatgrass. I think I’ll go with Cheatgrass which is shorter. Too early for me to begin drinking since I’m a light weight.

  194. Comment by Pupster on July 23, 2016 1:23 pm

Kicked it up a notch with more charcoal. Too early for the captain and cola. Coffee and captain? You don’t know.

My weight loss challenge at work ended on Friday, I was the only participant who posted the results, I guess I win? I’m down 14lbs from May 30th without really trying too hard, high fat low carb smaller portions no sweets. If I really tried I could do more better.

I’m reading this guy’s book, haven’t started the program though.

    http://www.drgundry.com/

I’d be interested in Leon’s take. His theory is that your genes are automatically programmed to make you fat and kill you if you eat the wrong things the wrong way. He dumbs down the science to my level so Leon probably won’t like it.

Might have a place lined up. Guest house on an avacado farm. Keep your fingers crossed.

  201. Comment by Pupster on July 23, 2016 4:48 pm

    Good luck, Alex. California, right?

Watched the first episode of Stranger Things, seems pretty good, although I don’t care for the “never show the monster” genre. They captured 1983 pretty well.

  202. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 23, 2016 5:25 pm

Guests gone. I managed to pass on all the cupcakes and ice cream. Possum is overtired and overstimulated but she’s bound to nap soon*.

Four bratwurst left. Be a shame if they didn’t get eaten. Real shame.

Just got back from shooting a few rounds of trap.

Damn it was stupid hot. 97 and about the same humidity.

Wife, kids and wife’s friends we’re planning on seeing Mamma Mia at the Muni (outdoor theater in St. Louis) tonight.

Meeting of the moms happened a few a minutes ago and decided to go out to dinner then come back to the pool and drink moscow mules instead.

I was looking forward to a full night alone, but I’ll take a half night and moscow mules.

Happy birfday, Possum! Happy anniversary roamy and mr. roamy!

I don’t wish any specific harm to the rest of you, so you’ve got that going on.

  207. Comment by Pupster on July 23, 2016 6:46 pm

As long as it’s not specific I guess.

Ribs turned out OK, a little too smokey for the boy’s tastes. I used too much cherry wood and with the mesquite charcoal I kept having to add to keep the temp up, it was pretty strong flavored. I need to get one of those charcoal chimney things and light the briquettes in there instead of adding it to the ones already lit in the grill.

  208. Comment by pendejogrande on July 23, 2016 7:02 pm

My mamas idea with ribs was to put them in a pressure cooker with some water and some BBQ sauce. Kraft. My daddy didn’t grill much. Maybe th occasional burger.

I didn’t eat a smoked pork rib until I was about 25 yo. I been hooked ever since.

  209. Comment by Jimbro on July 23, 2016 7:16 pm

We had an old cast iron hibachi the old man would cook some burgers on in the back yard. It was stationed on the rock wall next to the picnic table. At some point when I was in college we got a gas grill but barbecue was pretty much burgers, dogs and chicken until recently. Recently as in since I got hooked on smoking meat by you guys.

There’s a windstorm at Fenway Park blowing dirt and trash everywhere. Never seen it like that there. The players are all rubbing their eyes with the dirt that’s in there. It carried a ball by a Twins player for a triple.

Bad eulogy (started off fine with Psalm 23 then wandered into the weeds about reading speeches, pet peeves, what will and won’t get you into heaven, and the Rapture), rude people, and a soloist singing more for the glory of himself than of any glory to God or benefit to the rest of us mere mortals.

  251. Comment by Brother Cavil on July 23, 2016 10:41 pm

On the other hand, if it was the Obamas’ funeral, the front row seats would sell like hotcakes. Especially if you specify “spitting distance”.

  252. Comment by roamingfirehydrant on July 23, 2016 10:48 pm

Thanks, y’all. I felt awful for putting Mini-me through that.

It was the funeral home chapel, and the first four pews were reserved for family, so I’m guessing they were brothers and sisters. I was just astonished that no one moved to let the widow and kids sit at the front. Soloist sang as if he were in a church holding 1,000 people, not a chapel holding 60 or so.

Mr. RFH had a good point – he said that he can’t believe our friend would have liked that.

  253. Comment by ChrisP on July 23, 2016 10:50 pm

I have it in my will that for my funeral everyone gets handed a 6 pack of cheap beer as they walk in. AC/DC Hells Bells is too be played. Strippers or Hooters Girls are to be hired as the pallbearers and no eulogies. My 17 year old niece is the executor and she has good taste so I think she will follow thru.
