Up before derp
Good morning
I’d blame my early rising on the pups but it was my own damn fault when I had a calf cramp and put my foot on the floor to stretch it out which activated the Canine Alert System. There’s no shutting that off in the morning
Wakey wakey.
Derp was up.
5 am wake up here just happened. I decided to just go with it.
Jimbro, Bill Whittle has a new podcast and it’s really good. Historical. I was thinking, I don’t know your set up but on your drives to see your Mom it might be interesting.
https://billwhittle.com/links-to-the-cold-war-what-we-saw-podcast-series-by-bill-whittle/
Carin, you know I risk getting killed by other H2ers for asking but how are you ramping up your training for the Ragnor? (sp)
Of course, I listen to some of my podcasts while falling asleep so, I hope I don’t steer you wrong.
This year, I am following the 80/20 method. Last year, I did the ‘i don’t need no junk miles’ strategy, and I really don’t think it suited me. I think it’s fine if you’re running a 10 mile race, and if you’re younger maybe even the half marathon. But I didn’t feel it was enough for the amount of miles I did.
So … this year, MORE miles, but many/most of them pretty slow. Like – really slow. 11 min miles. 12 min miles sometimes. But LOTS of miles. Sprint work. Some speed work in the middle of the those slow miles. But lots of slow miles. They theory is that if you can do long slow runs, and not need a lot of recovery. So far, I find it to be true. There is a lot of research to support this (and think of the Africans who basically run nice and slow everywhere/to school, but then added in speed work and THAT is when they started kicking ass). Book by Matt Fitzgerald is what I’m loosely following.
For the amount of running I’m doing, my legs, etc, just need to be prepared to handle that much time of pounding (sywm). So long slow to handle, and then separate “speed” work that isn’t as draining.
I search the radio for sports and political talk as I drive Mare. We have limited choices here, maybe half a dozen stations with content I’ll listen to (which makes having only 6 preset buttons on my radio ideal). As I drive south there are way more choices, FM and AM. Part of staying awake is the constant searching for a good station. My truck is a 2007 Tacoma and it has an AM/FM/CD player only. I think I’ve had the same 10 CD’s in there since I’ve owned it and really ought to give them to Ben to trade in at the music store.
That being said, I am a fan of Bill Whittle. His speaking style is interesting and always informative but also, unfortunately, soporific.
Biden and his campaign reminds me of McCain’s. just went go away. wonder if dems feel like that.
him whittle never puts me to sleep, even his cadence is mixed enough.
This is short but cool.

Carin, is the Ragnor just relays or is it also some mud run thrown in?
It’s not an obstacle or “mud” run, but I am doing a trail version as well in addition to the road. So, there *could* be mud. The hills/trail will definitely be more challenging than the road.
Just finished the CF newsletter. whew. One task accomplished for the day.
Now I need to go find Moose’s collar. He lost it yesterday outside. Probably while playing.

Maybe.
Nice video, Mare.

My 19 acres in Kazoo was subject to a stack of zoning regulations. Ag land in Kalamazoo can only be split once in any 10-year period, and could not be used for heavy industry or multi-unit housing of any kind. No apartment building, no trailer park. And that’s before you get to the requirements for a septic system for even one house to be built, and without which you couldn’t reside there legally. I asked about composting toilets, even, and was basically told I’d be arrested if I disposed of human waste on the land.
Splitting of agricultural land is regulated by the State of Michigan. It can be split into a maximum of 4 parcels once in ten years, otherwise it is subject to the Plat Act. So it can be split more often, and into more parcels but then they become “platted lots” and are subject to all of the State regulations contained in the Plat Act – not a Kalamazoo thing, everywhere in the State.
As to the heavy industry or multifamily housing restrictions, those go out the window if the developer applies to have the land rezoned. If the municipality turns down the rezoning, the developer can take them to court to have the court mandate the zoning. Then it gets into a can of worms about whether the township is accommodating ALL types of zoning and development, and isn’t trying to keep out certain kinds of development. If the developer can show that they are, the municipality is ordered to change the zoning. Unfortunately this happens all of the time.
As to septic systems, that’s where counties really have power to deny and restrict development. (In Washtenaw County minimum lot size is one acre, and there has to be percable soil not only for one field, but also room for a second for future expansion.) But if the development is big enough to support a sewage treatment plant, the county can no longer restrict development.
So, as much as we would like to keep the McMasions away from the donkey farms, progress is in favor of developers. If you are near a railroad or major highway and someone wants industrial zoning, they’re going to eventually get it.
It’s progress, man. Why do you hate rich people? Why do you hate jobs?

The Shire is just fine the way it is. The neighboring towns need jobs and rich people more than we do.
The long-distance power lines and giant poles in my yard are a pain while they are upgrading them, but they are also defensive. The only thing you can build under them is a fence, and that has to remain accessible to maintenance vehicles. Means the fields to my north and south are going to stay fields.
Now I just have to buy the field to the west and then I can build a castle.
I cannot get my old jeans on over my ass. I can’t be sure if it’s the extra weight, or my GAINS. My ass isn’t really where I gain weight.

Looks like it is just now happening.
The “food in space” article just screams that there’s no viability to microgravity. It’s ludicrous to try and plan for that environment, humans can’t live there for long enough for it to matter. The focus needs to be on making practical structures for the Earth-Mars transit that can be spun to provide centrifugal “gravity”, which ain’t perfect but is better than nothing, and would let you cook more or less normally.
My personal guess is that space “cuisine” is going to involve a lot of tilapia and sardines.
Maybe herring, too. Sadly, not smoked.
Lots of mushrooms. Also, wouldn’t chickens be practical as well? A supply of eggs for food, and when they get too old you kill them and cook them.
Agreed about making practical structures.
Chickens are fine if you’re at 1g and have some grassy “fields” for them. On Mars proper they’d be capable of true flight unless clipped, so maybe a little more trouble, and they need grass and bugs to eat. My strong suspicion is that the first offworld colonies and long-term habitats are going to focus on small, filtering fish as a primary protein source, likely with seaweed as an oxygenator and foodstuff. To me this sounds most like sushi or sashimi. Rice paddies can be pretty small and still be productive, so maybe that could be a second-gen space farm, possibly with crayfish in the mix.
Mushrooms only seem like a good idea because they don’t need as much light as plants, but that means they get all their nutrition/energy from physical inputs, which for most edible species is woody plant matter like logs or straw, and then you’re back to needing a grassy field again. You don’t want to eat the fungus that can live in human poop, generally, even if the poop is pasteurized. In the “space rice paddy” scenario, you might have enough rice stalks to grow them, but again, I think that comes later, after you’ve got a big habitat with decent gravity or “gravity”.
This is awesome.
The biggest boob on the stage ends up being the nominee.
Where can I get a BIDEN FOR SENATE bumper sticker?
Where can I get a BIDEN FOR SENATE bumper sticker?
Trump should start selling them.
First birds in space farms might be ducks, now that I’m really thinking it through, though there are allergy issues with the eggs that most people aren’t aware of. Lots of white folks are allergic to them and don’t even know it. Two of the homestead vloggers I follow found that out the hard way.
To soften a hen, you must massage it…not choke it.
*cough*
Car in, do you massage your chickens? You should massage your chickens.
If Biden winds up the nominee, who do you think his handlers want as VP? Buttigieg, Mooch, Bammy himself? Sanders?
It will have to be ‘younger’ and someone who ticks a few boxes – gay, female, maybe black, illegal tranny.

Intolerable, really. You’d have to be born here just to survive the harsh and forbidding climate.

God loves me. Those stupid Japanese and Italians (foreigners) just closed their schools…..what a bunch of morons. No worries, this is just like all the other flu’s. I’ll go with the better to have and need than to need and not have crazy people. Good luck with your strategy.
So, you don’t think some people have gotten a little crazy? Seriously, I have enough food around here to last a few weeks w/o problems. Do folks really run that low? That we have stores with no water or toilet paper or canned chicken?
My “strategy” is that I always have food in the house. Always. You never know what may happen. But this event is hysteria.
Can you spatchcock a robin?
get to week 3, and the fixins might be getting a little strange, but there’s a lot of food in my house, too.
Full freezer, too.
If the Japanese are closing schools they should man up and cancel the Olympics.
Seriously, am I supposed to refrain from calling someone an effing imbecile if they say they think a dementia patient should be running the Country?
J’ames, exactly. I got plenty of beans and canned this or that. I mean, if it’s my LIFE if I go to the store (which it’s not) I’m fine with what I’ve got.
I just wonder … people just love a nice good fuss.
Robins and rabbits may get scarce around here if shit goes to hell.
Technically, he’s not a dementia patient, since he hasn’t been to the doctor and been diagnosed, that I know of.

Holy Shit, that makes me sick to my stomach. That’s the kind of shit they’d pull too.
This is the stuff I see on facedouche:
I heard in the radio this morning that the death toll is up to 9 in Seattle 😲

Dan Yup crazy
No, It’s not crazy. Here are the cases in Seattle .
A female in her 40s, worked at LifeCare, never hospitalized and is recovering at home
A female in her 60s, family member of a confirmed case of COVID-19, not hospitalized
A male in his 70s, a frequent visitor of LifeCare, hospitalization status unknown currently
A male in his 20s, unknown exposure, hospitalized at Swedish Issaquah
A male in his 20s, unknown exposure, hospitalized at Swedish Issaquah

A male in his 50s, resident of LifeCare, hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center and died on 2/26/20
14 other cases, already reported earlier by Public Health, include:
A male in his 50s, hospitalized at Highline Hospital. No known exposures. He is in stable but critical condition. He had no underlying health conditions.
A male in his 70s, a resident of LifeCare, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The man had underlying health conditions, and died 3/1/20
A female in her 70s, a resident of LifeCare, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland. The woman had underlying health conditions, and died 3/1/20

A male in his 70s was hospitalized at EvergreenHealth. He had underlying health conditions and died on 2/29/20.
A man in his 60s, hospitalized at Valley Medical Center in Renton.
A man in 60s, hospitalized at Virginia Mason Medical Center.
A woman in her 50s, who had traveled to South Korea; recovering at home
A woman in her 70s, who was a resident of LifeCare in Kirkland, hospitalized at EvergreenHealth and died on 3/2/20
A woman in her 40s, employed by LifeCare, who is hospitalized at Overlake Medical Center
A man in his 50s, who was hospitalized and died 2/28/20 at EvergreenHealth
mostly, it’s people getting sick, some a little sick, some sicker. WHo knows how many have caught it and are unaware? Most of the people who died are over 70 and compromised already. The youngest was someone in his 50’s and I think he had underlying issues as well.

No, but how does anyone argue (except the silly paid for NeverTrumpers) that Joe Biden should be elected.
Look, he’s further along than dad got, but it’s fucking obvious to anyone who’s dealt with someone with dementia what’s going on with Biden. Anyone pushing him as a serious candidate is guilty of fraud at the very least. He’s a vehicle for a stealth candidate who will occupy the VP slot on the ticket, but would clearly be President within months.
It is not healthy for me to have this level of hatred towards anybody, but God help me, the Democrats are earning it at historic rates.

So, you don’t think some people have gotten a little crazy? Seriously, I have enough food around here to last a few weeks w/o problems. Do folks really run that low?
=======
I know people in New York city who have may e a couple of days of food on hand. Stores and restaurants are so close and convenient, they hardly ever cook.
City folk living like that in China is how this shit spread so fast over there. The wet market is “just in time delivery” for fresh meat.
Preppers over here can and freeze, and that’s a hefty amount of sanitation in and of itself.
Well, yea, that’s foolish. I would think since 9/11 or similar people would be better prepared than that.
I guess I forgot (how could I ? I serve them every day) about people who basically don’t eat at home. Who eat in a restaurant multiple times a week.
So … no, I don’t need to stock up because I have the normal level of pantry shit that everyone *should* have.
Yea, Joe is not a good candidate. It’s hilarious, actually. I have lefty friends who are losing their shit over the DNC taking it away from Bernie. Again. But Bernie or Biden? Lol. What a choice.
Evan Bayh really should have tried again, but maybe he’s just done and happily retired.
He’s only 65. He’d be the youngest man on the field, and the only one to win a statewide race in a red state.
Since Trump is younger than Biden and Bernie (I think), someone should probably go through the Dem pundits social media and start saving all the posts about how Trump was way too old to be president during the previous election.
You weren’t belittling hysteria, you were belittling the “crazy”people playing catch up by trying to get prepared from your admitted perch of security. I’ve watched you minimize this non normal event for a couple of days now. And then you cite the stuff you’ve seen on facebook?Cause everybody knows you can believe all that shit. And the Japanese are discussing the impact on the olympics. Fuck that judgemental bullshit is what I’m saying.
TeeRoy, I heard a blurb on the radio that 55% of Ill-annoyins approve of a new progessive tax rate of 31%. 32% disapprove. Not sure if I heard it right but they want to put in on the ballot? Yeah, I’m not buying that shit. Maybe 55% of state employees approve it but I doubt the general public does. I may be wrong. And if I’m wrong and husband’s old buddy (the smarter than everyone, catholic in name only guy) decides to decamp over to my state, aw hell to the no. I will tell him to keep his ass where he shit the bed.
Ace’s post on the dude in a dress is hilarious. Also, the girl in the story is pitiful.
First of all, I was citing on facebook the quick exchange between two people .
I heard in the radio this morning that the death toll is up to 9 in Seattle 😲

Dan Yup crazy
****
this along with all the hysteria which has a bigger effect than the virus itself.
The long quote was NOT from facebook. That was from here:
https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/health/news/2020/March/3-covid19-8-deaths.aspx?fbclid=IwAR2NGzdQTMEEw6j5W7kX-XyJPnnmLXzM55ZNe05lDKev9CZLefdMseqgZVs
So, no. I’m belittling hysteria. Because that’s what I’m belittling. If you read on, you’ll see that I admitted to not considering that some people basically keep zero food in their house.
I may have to eat beans for a few weeks, but if something horrible happened, I could shelter in place. It wouldn’t be luxury, and i might run out of toilet paper. But I’m ok with that. Because if shit got that bad, toilet paper isn’t really the top of my concerns.
Evan Bayh really should have tried again, but maybe he’s just done and happily retired.

So, here’s the thing.
I’m really short on groceries–some of this is cash flow and some of this is the D acting like a fucking battleship anchor more and more frequently of late. I need to stock up on general principles, quarantine supplies regardless. Part of me doubts that, if this is For Realz, Yo, this would be a heavily affected area…except we have a Korean community of significance…many with Hyundai management ties…and that means regular traffic.
So, where I am: I have no fucking idea if this is really that serious or not. Given how corrupted the channels of information have become and utterly unreliable many of the sources are, I can’t be sure anything I “know” is accurate or not. And even if I did, I’m probably not really in a good position to prep for it even if there wasn’t a panic on.

It’s no worse than the regular flu.

Your turn, Obama, Biden, Sanders.
It has a higher mortality rate than regular flu, doesn’t it?
Not really. Mortality rate is 2% of confirmed cases.
Confirmed cases is only about 15% of the people who get it, and most all the people who die from it.
Confirmed cases are those that got sick enough to go to the hospital.

Here’s the thing. This virus has been on the radar for about 8 weeks now. It first came to my attention because the origin city (Wuhan) has a known Bio Weapons Facility. Once it was recognized the Chinese took EXTRAORDINARY steps to address situation. This was well documented by various media outlets with images. They literally quarantined ENTIRE CITIES, conducted massive disinfectant operations and built care facilities in a week. They also sustained a huge voluntary negative impact on the economic side.
Take a look at the map. See the numbers? See the locations? This is AFTER the Chinese took those measures. Historically speaking this virus is in its infancy in comparison to other “outbreaks.” Does it appear to you that possibly this virus is easily transmitted and highly contagious? Are the other countries out there occupied by alarmist kneejerk type leadership known for making drastic unnecessary decisions?
Regarding any panic and our media. First, what would you expect our leaders to say? You think they would come right out and say “Things are going to get bad folks”? Or would they say, “dont panic, we got this under control”? As for our media….we’ve already established that they LIE by omission, outright and for reasons of agenda repeatedly for the past 11 years. Do you really have any faith in anything they say? Yet you wonder about the validity and rationale regarding not trusting them?
The “only 3% mortality” is thrown about as a inconsequential dismissive unless you consider the population as a whole or happen to be one of the unfortunate 3% or their loved ones. But fuck it, its just the elderly and children..no big deal right? At its current rate of spread lets figure on 100 million made ill from this virus….DO THE MATH…Right now, today its in 14 states in the US. King Country in Washington State is telling folks to seriously consider “telecommuting” or staying home for a while. The CDC is saying things like “maybe you should consider staying home for two weeks if you can”. Other countries are closing their schools down anywhere from two weeks to a month (Italy and Japan)
This is normal right? This is the way .govs normally react to a “flu” right? This is the normal transmission rate? Everything is fine, Right?
Again, this thing is in its infancy. It normally takes 1 to 2 yrs for something like this to burn out, (least thats been the case in the past) things like weather can have a impact, etc.
So maybe (just maybe) putting all this together, its understandable that those that are prone to excitability are a bit strident in their efforts when they realize they are behind the curve on self sustainment. Maybe you should reconsider your position and your sources veracity while making decisions. Or maybe not, All I know is that I’d rather myself and my family be firmly in the 97% of the population vs. the 3 %. I don’t believe a fucking word from the media or our “leadership” until I’ve proven the source and even then I maintain a wary eye as it seems to the rational approach all things considered.
Sleep Well everyone. Prayers out for your continued good health.
Distant echoes reverberated plainly.
It does seem like a lot of governments are taking extraordinary steps to prevent the spread of this virus, if it is no more virile than an ordinary flu it does not make sense. Is anybody else seeing the kind of panic Oso is reporting in New Mexico? I’m not seeing anything like that here but we only have one confirmed case, dude was visiting a “long term care” facility in Washington state and came home sick.
I wonder if we’ll get to the point with diseases that Scott often makes about sounds that might be gunfire.
A car backfires in Boston so schools are shut down all throughout Connecticut. Abundance of caution. Protect the children.
A gun in Sri Lanka gets the AvianSwineCoronaFlu. World wide travel is halted. Abundance of caution. Protect the children.
Not seeing anything here in the Tank Abram’s state. But we did get a notification from work to slow down on travel. Same with GND.
I sorta wonder if telling people at work to stop traveling is just a hedge for cost management.
Have only seen frequent emails from our state level CDC and hospital admin. I was in the grocery store earlier in the week but it was a search and purchase mission for one item. Stopped by Home Depot yesterday and in the entry set up they had boxes of bleach on sale. I haven’t been in any big box stores in the last couple of weeks.
I think Jay mentioned he had some punny memes cocked and loaded to post. If so, FIRE!

That’s gotten me out of my normal, excessive amount of travel to the customer that I’d been doing for the first 2 years with my company. I had been going 1 week out of every 6 for most of that time. Since the prime contract changed hands (a little less than 2 years ago) I’ve only had to travel twice. Either the new contract terms have no travel budget, or they’re pinching pennies on it. No complaints here. I miss seeing my friends who live down there, but I don’t miss the headache or hearing Mare Pete welcoming me back to the South Bend Airport*.
*yes, he’s that fucking vain, his voice plays/played on the PA every 20 minutes or so
Michigan has tested 6 or 7 people and it’s been negative each time. As I said, If I have to eat beans for a few weeks, I’m good. I wouldn’t touch a cleaned surface in public because of bleach. Don’t touch your face, wash your hands.
The article Scott linked said that we should be focusing our precautions on the vulnerable population (the elderly). Not causing panic mask buying, etc, for the folks who aren’t likely to get seriously ill.
And I had to talk Pay down off the wall last week about this. He was flipping out.
Last night we took bets on what the actual mortality rate was going to be. He is more affected by media – and he’s thinking 7%. That’s what the media is doing to people.
When I was at Costco I panic-bought some whiskey and guacamole.
Don’t want to run short of the essentials.
Sadly, Messican avocados went into the guac. If I lived anywhere they’d grow, I’d have a giant grove of these things and sells them as “fair-trade avocados”.
I’d spend a giant windfall on a yuge, heated greenhouse so I could grow limes, avocados, and grapefruit and grow them all right here if I could.
Prediction: coronavirus vaccine will have a non-zero death toll.
I’ll admit, I got wound up by the media on the Richmond gun protest. I was 100% sure that shit was going to happen, and the video of the feds questioning a guy for visiting the capitol a few days prior was icing on the cake. Glad I was wrong.
There’s a meme that I can’t find now that is the woman shouting at the cat “Pandemic!” and the cat shouting back “Dem Panic!”
I wouldn’t touch a cleaned surface in public because of bleach.
Opps, I meant to add^^^^^^^^^ why? I don’t understand this statement.

That meme is God’s gift to the internetwebs.

Roamy, how’s NASA doing researching the
alien probenew moon we’ve acquired? Do we know when it started following us?One of my friends is a much better prepper than I am. He picks an uncommon but not too obscure word, and when he hears that word in conversation, he uses only his preps for the next 48 hours. He said it keeps him vigilant and makes him use some of the MREs before the expiration date. He said it happened 3 times in one year and not at all for another year.
Another friend has very little food in the house, even though she has been through ice storms and tornadoes. Just not motivated.
Last but not least, my dipshit brother lives in Florida and thought he was getting a great deal on frozen foods when everyone was prepping for a hurricane. (It was half price or better.) He doesn’t have a generator, so when the power was out for days, all the food spoiled.
Prediction: Coronavirus will be totally off the map in a month or so.
Next year: OMG Coronavirus is back.
I haven’t read the article but submit that focusing on preventive behaviors regarding the susceptible is the best focused approach. I briefed my in laws and the rest of my family on this very thing last weekend. I called a family meeting (supper) and inserted it into the table conversation. Not time to freak out. Minimize exposure to the public (not curtail completely), increase hygienic behaviors, top off the pantry, get plenty of rest, take vitamins to support the immune system, top off meds if possible, be mentally prepared in case the .gov announces some kind of drastic approach.
There are potential positives that can come from this. We may as a culture become more attuned to hygienic behaviors. We may as a culture become more attuned to rational preparedness / sustainment behaviors. .Gov has always recommended two weeks worth of supplies on standby to support the individuals in the event of natural / man made disaster or economic troubles. Shit Happens.
I handle money, lots of money at work. Money has long be considered “dirty”, I’ve certainly increased my use of the gel handwash from three to four times a day to after every “batch” and intend to make the practice SOP. I also visit multiple locations throughout various communities daily. My concern is if bring something home. I am at high risk for exposure to all sorts of bugs and recognizing that requires behavior modification to mitigate the threat(s). This is what I do and have done (threat mitigation) for my entire career and as part of my lifestyle based on my life experience. Unfortunately the majority of humans walk through life not considering the world they live in because they believe its negative thinking and bad things wont happen to them cause they are good people. I have a optimistic but jaded world view because I have witnessed the human condition in all its glory. Old saying in my circles “I dont mind dying, but Id hate to die stupid.”
Peace.
How did we get the Coronavirus anyway?
I thought we spent like 300K to teach people how to wash their dicks back in 2009.
