    Hope the Sudafed unstops them Pups. Every now and then I notice fluid in my ears and otherwise feel fine. It might be from allergies – who knows. I’m on the stinging nettle capsules and drink black tea with honey most afternoons at tea time and I think those help a little. Generic Alavert is my backup if it’s really bad/

    I’m not sure how I picked it up. My old man drank tea at breakfast, took a thermos full to work and after dinner. He’d occasionally have one if he was watching the Bruins in a night game. Never saw him drink coffee once in my life. As a kid I drank tea with him and picked up coffee from my cop cousin-in-law who lived a couple of miles away. We’d visit often and my cousin Kathy would put a fresh pot on and we’d sit around the kitchen table telling stories while getting hopped up on coffee.

    In unrelated health news, my bumblebee sting is progressing but it is nowhere near as bad as that wasp sting. Wasp stings (to me) result in cartoonishly out of control limb swelling, heat, dark redness, and pain, followed by insane itchiness and throbbing for a week as it heals.

    This has blown up a bit and turned reddish and warm but only to about a 5 inch diameter and it doesn’t hurt.

    Wasps must have some extra spicy ingredients in their concoction.

    I really need to look into that allergy immunotherapy thing. Would be so great to not have this anymore. I’m so jumpy about buzzing noises in the garden now. When I hear a damn ricerocket on the highway two miles away I freeze and scan my surroundings before I can even think about it for a second. Ridiculous.

    Teatime is a great idea and I think I’m going to try to take it up with my functional herbal teas. I had been toting some to work now and then but didn’t keep up with it because it’s just not convenient. In the late afternoon when things have died down a bit and I’m between tasks is really the perfect time.

    I see that a common theme on the Left is that the shooter was a “registered Republican.”

    Which is really meaningless. The kid was only 20, so he wasn’t registered for anything very long. The ability to change party affiliation is so simple, it can switch every election. People change parties in order to vote in primaries that they hope to influence (unless that state has open primaries), regardless of any intention to vote for that party in the actual election.

    I voted for Tulsi Gabbard in the Democratic primary before 2020, because (1) the county I lived in made voting Republican an exercise in futility anyway, and (2) I hated every other Democratic candidate. For years afterward, the DNC thought I was a Democrat and inundated me with their stupid mailings. I voted Republican in the actual election.

    As far as Social Security goes, it matters when the date you can collect full (100%) benefits is, not just your current age. For me, that was 66 and 2/3. I started taking it when I could get the 100% amount. The penalty for taking a benefit early is pretty severe.

    I know folks who want to wait until they are able to collect the full enhanced amount (for me that would have been around 72, iirc.) I decided that was foolish, given the shaky long-term prospects. To give up almost 7 years worth of monthly checks in order to start getting a benefit that was maybe 115% of the full benefit … well, I wouldn’t even break even until I was in my late 70’s. And that doesn’t factor in the decreasing value of the dollar.

    But as the system gets more uncertain, taking a benefit sooner makes more sense. Also given that the COLA increases are basically pulled out of their ass in order to keep the benefit from actually keeping up with inflation.

    Wading through twitchnutz this morning. Supposedly local cops were supposed to have a swat team on the roof where the assassin was. They chose to stay inside the building rather than go atop. Counter sniper couldn’t fire on assassin until they were sure it wasn’t a friendly.

    Bottom line, it sounds like planning and interagency coms were equivalent to a middle school field trip.

    True, but you can get odds on your longevity. Those statistical tables exist. Which you then tailor with first hand knowledge about your own health.

    It’s no different than life insurance, except inverted. The longer you live, the more SocSec pays you. For life insurance, it’s just the opposite. (Which makes you wonder why the SocSecAdmin didn’t use those payroll taxes to buy life insurance policies on us instead of handing it over to Congress to spend. I guess we didn’t have confidence in giving the government any more reasons to kill us off early.)

    There are no guarantees in life. You take your best shot at figuring out what should work.

    I’m with you guys on the Social Security thing. I got “retired” early during the Obama admin so I started taking SS as soon as I was eligible without paying a penalty (age 62.5). It took a lot of pressure off my IRA investments and has allowed them to grow. My logic was that if I waited to take the full benefit, my time to break even would be shorter, so I was better off having the reduced amount sooner. Number 1 is you don’t know how long you’re going to live. Number 2, if you don’t need the money you can always invest it, the market has done fairly well considering all the shit fiscal policies. It’s kind of a time value of money thing. The web is littered with people offering advice.

    The wife mentioned retiring late this year. There is some caveat in the rules for way that she decides on when and how to take her SS benefits that is influenced by my benefits, spousal something something that I’ll have to look up. If I remember correctly, the options she chooses when starting benefits will affect the benefits she gets after I pass, assuming I pass before she does.

    I wanted a zero turn but couldn’t convince myself that the difference in cost over a standard riding mower was worth it. I don’t know if it would be any faster now that I’ve got all my patterns worked out, but if I ever become completely unemployable and have to mow lawns for a living, I’ll want a zero.

    As far as Social Security age of enrolling goes, we put the payouts per age into excel and picked 80 as death year. No matter what year you started to collect, by 80 y/o you had collected the same amount.

    Tomorrow is promised to no one.

    Yeah. I tell my kids not to expect anything from the government by the time they reach retirement. That I’ll collect what I can now, and hopefully pass more along to them when I’m gone.

    So my goal is to make sure I don’t run it down to zero when I punch out, and there is something left for them.

    The pic at 8:13 reminds me of an adventure I had. In the early 80’s I had a job at a construction delivery company. I was the only non drinker in the crew, and eventually (in 6 months) I was the only driver without a DUI. That meant I was the Boom Truck Driver. I drove to the job site, planted my outriggers and unloaded the 80,000# truck. Unknown to me the truck slipped down the slope putting a pine tree between the cab and the bed. Like the picture shown, The Crane operator on the 18 story High Rise next to me saw my plight and wrapped 3 straps around my truck and trailer and lifted me from around the pine tree between my bed and cab.

    I gave him my lunch and 2 Spartan Supply Tee shirts and a SP hat. I still owe you Dude!
