If I had to guess I’d say they thought they had nothing to lose because no one but a thin sliver of America watches the NHL. There’s probably equal numbers of viewers in the US and Canada. They probably figured they’d jump on the bandwagon of embracing diversity and pick up more fans and street cred except the players and most of the existing fans said blow it out your ass

I’ve gone to maybe 30 hockey games in my life between pros, minor league, college and my friend’s old man league and they’re fun to watch in person. Watching them on TV is just not my bag. Bruins are actually doing well this year so if they’re cup contenders I’ll watch that series.
They don’t watch any sports because to them “sports” was dropping the soap in the shower, and they don’t show that on tv.

Times will get interesting if he dies relatively soon. As I understand it we’re a few Cardinals short of a Conclave right now, so the selection of a new pontiff will be done with just the present set and not another dozen or so that were yet to be named (by Francis).
OTOH, there are a bunch of decent US bishops and archbishops in the US about to hit mandatory retirement age, and if there’s no Francis, his successor will be elevating their replacements.
