MMM 520

Last full week of November. Short week at work for most of us, let’s get to it.

That environment can’t be good for the plates or bar.

Happiness is a warm bun. Not exactly a fitness pic, but it sure is motivational.

I like to think this is the same gal not in her dress.

Thank you for not doing duck face, young lady.

Michelle.

Triptych.

2023 is not a leap year.

I like her braids.

Looks warm there.

Does this make today’s poat not racist, or is she too white-adjacent to count.

Pretty smile.

And that’s it. Go grab Monday by the … you know, the thing.

The U of Idaho killings continue to get more bizarre by the day

Yet the local constabulary insists there’s no need for the public to panic. Because they haven’t found a suspect. Or a weapon. Or a motive. Or any other evidence.

Without anything but history as a guide, I’m pretty sure the gay club shootings were another drug dealing/sometimes butt buddy issue, pretty much the same as Matthew Sheppard.

I had crazy vivid nightmares/ dreams last night. At several points there was End of World street scenes of destruction and there were terrible-shaped destructive spiritual creatures that if you got too close would touch you and…change you. Invade you somehow. Some people had things like odd dark openings or extra eyes appear on their bodies in strange places.

These things were killing people out in the streets with some kind of light and fire. They didn’t do that when they came indoors. I knew I had to stay indoors. Some of them had a tactic of lying on the ground so you had to step over them and therefore come close enough to get touched and invaded. I saw one that was red and was shaped like a person with limbs missing. Like half a man, but red and smooth.

It was lying between two objects so that in order to get away you had to step over it. It touched the first person who did, of course. Another thing that looked like more of a large unkempt person emerged from a refrigerator, turned and looked at someone next to me, appeared delighted, and came and joined with that person, touching him and entering.

At the end I was indoors in a strange house, talking to someone who was in some kind of cult that accepted or encouraged these things happening. I was coyly trying to slither out of this situation while not offending anybody. At the very end, I turned into a kitten to escape and was placed in a refrigerator. I escaped the refrigerator and was promptly returned. That last part I think was my mind typically inserting something funny into something dreadful.

I then saw Hotspur’s mom taking it up the pooper and woke up laughing.

Rheumatoid is an autoimmune condition. It’s been going up all over for a lot of reasons. Processed food, gluten and gliadin in wheat (dramatically higher in modern cultivars), glyphosate on fields, and ironically modern sanitation all contribute (because an immune system strong enough to fight all the parasites and bad stuff we had before soap and clean water sometimes decides to pick fights when it’s got nothing to do).

We got a bunch of 3M window insulation kits a while back that were on sale for almost free at a discount place. I started applying some yesterday and realized the tape was no good anymore. Scott had to order just the tape from Amazon. Still a good deal. Psyched to tighten up this drafty old house this winter.

I am still having free floating dread/ anxiety this morning. Haven’t taken my vitamins in a week at least, maybe I need some magnesium.

Thanks, Leon. I wonder if Ireland has less modified wheat or the brown bread just had a lot less of the gluten or gliaden. My knees do better when I don’t eat wheat.

Time to go play in the lab. Should be a quiet day.

I do pretty well on Ezekiel bread, but it’s pretty pricy and I don’t need all those carbs these days. It ain’t cheap, though. I have been tempted to sprout and ferment wheat berries and lentils myself and see if I can replicate it. None of the recipes I’ve found online pretending to be “homemade Ezekiel bread” have the sprouting step.

Pretty sure that’s why he’s there.

The bloat in corporate america is pretty bad. It’s not just the DIE, HR, equity consultant variety either. There are a ton of positions that just aren’t necessary.

We’ve hired two people this year, each for about 175 – 200K and neither knows what to do. They’re both competent but supervise a team of 3, who are totally self sufficient. They basically do nothing.

Near as I can tell, this is a lot of the “systems engineer” position/title that often ends up as just the scrum master, who’s whole job is asking for updates in meetings and managing the task board. It’s important work, but outside of meetings there’s no way it’s 40 hours of “work” in a given week. I have no idea what else they do with their time.

Most of our implementations are a few days. We set up a SFTP and move on. They send us the data, we clean it up and add to it, then send it back. Easy peasy. I managed this group for a year and never had one moment of thought about it.

The new implementation director looked totally shell shocked when he was told. He’s used to 6 month implementations with consultants, advisory, outside companies, etc.

There’s literally nothing to do for him. He’ll be gone in a year.

  23. Comment by Hotspur on November 21, 2022 10:10 am

I can’t relate to any of this.

“…nothing for him to do. He’ll be gone in a year.”

It takes a year to get rid of deadwood?

    Why?

  24. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 21, 2022 10:16 am

Because it can take that long for a tech company to even notice that (1) there are no substantive tasks for this role to perform and (2) the person in the role has not sought out substantive tasks to perform that were outside his specified ones.

A competent person with no real work who nonetheless finds it and then does it is an asset who needs a re-definition of his job, and a lot of bigger firms are willing to spend a year’s salary on someone finding that out, even if that isn’t an explicit policy.

Oh no. We won’t get rid of him. He’ll leave on his own but it’ll take about six months to figure out there’s nothing to do and therefore no career path, and then a few months to find a new job.

  26. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 21, 2022 10:19 am

In a purely reductionist example, you could hire a system administrator to manage your deployments to Production because the devs can’t be bothered and the process is atrocious. SysAdmin is a wiz so he scripts the deployment down to a single button press in his first week on the job.

What’s he do after that? A lot of guys go quiet and just push the button they built and pretend nothing has changed, because if they say anything, they’re shitcanned or put onto harder or unpleasant work.

Lots of people who have issues with wheat can eat bread and pasta in Europe without any problems. No idea why.

  28. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 21, 2022 10:30 am

I’m not defending that behavior at all, by the way, it’s just what I’ve seen happen in larger firms. People work as little as they can get away with, and WFH has made it even easier. There’s a reason people can get away with 2+ “full time” jobs now.

  29. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 21, 2022 10:35 am

Europe banned a lot of the common herbicides in use over here, along with most GMO grains, Pepe. Lots of folks are sensitive to one or the other, and the amount of residue permitted in grain-based foods in the US is fairly high. Industrial food systems have consequences. On the plus side, we’re a food exporter and the food is cheap and relatively safe for most. We’re also not China in terms of safety or adulteration. Downside, the ability to tolerate and thrive on that food as it comes to us is far from universal.

  30. Comment by Hotspur on November 21, 2022 10:46 am

The largest firm I’ve ever worked for was about thirty people, and that was back in the days before computers.

If you break it down to its most basic function, HR exists to keep incompetent people in their jobs.

  41. Comment by ruralcounsel on November 21, 2022 1:44 pm

There’s a heuristic, Price’s Law, that 50% of the work in an organization is done by the square root of the number of employees. So 100 employees, 10 people are doing 50% of the work. 1,000 employees, 31 people, more or less, are doing half the work.

  47. Comment by Jimbro on November 21, 2022 2:04 pm

I was in my 20’s so it was cool and totally heterosexual.

Besides, one guy was dating a chick in St. Louis and was out there most of the time. He’d come back before exams and pull a few all-nighters to study, take the exam, see his parents and fly back to St. Louis again.

The other roommate was dating a fellow med student and was at her apartment a lot. I liked when she stayed over because she’d clean the toilet and shower.

  48. Comment by ruralcounsel on November 21, 2022 2:16 pm

Yeah, I had a GF who was disgusted by my lowly housekeeping standards and would spontaneously clean when she was over. There was nothing wrong with that, until she’d exhaust herself and then bitch about all the work she’d done. It wasn’t that I didn’t appreciate it, but from my perspective it was unnecessary and not requested. When I was at her place, I’d be happy to do those maintenance type things that required tools and know-how if she asked, but I didn’t go through her place looking for things to fix and then get ticked at her for it. Mars-Venus problems.

  49. Comment by Hotspur on November 21, 2022 3:01 pm

When HotBride and I started dating, she had been living in Michigan – single – for about 8 years. One night we got about six inches of snow, so next morning I headed over to her house in my 4WD with snow shovel in back seat, and started shoveling her driveway.

After a bit she came out and had this look of sheer joy on her face. Nobody had ever done this for her.

That pretty much cemented it right there. I do recall her cleaning the toilet in my condo but can’t remember if it was before or after the driveway incident.

  50. Comment by Brother Tim on November 21, 2022 3:28 pm

I recently moved into a housemates situation. Four adults, I’m about middle of the pack age-wise. One guy (who we rent from) only there one day a week. Second person, lesbian high school teacher (yes, in Alabama) not there weekends. Me and one last dude, well older than me. Other than the lesbian no ghey involved. Sometimes it’s just what you can afford, and you can bet it’s just going to be more commonplace as housing’s fuckage levels continue to soar.

  51. Comment by Jimbro on November 21, 2022 3:39 pm

  53. Comment by Jimbro on November 21, 2022 3:47 pm

First couple of places I rented had drop in girlfriends who I assume did some cleaning. After renting I bought a duplex and had roommates to help pay the mortgage. One guy was an absolute pig and it forced my brother who was the other roommate to use the bathroom in my room. The messy guy got a girlfriend who ended up living at my house. Like, she was there all the time. After a few months I realized this and told him it was time to move out. They moved, got an apartment together and she broke up with him less than a month later.
