HHD 09-07-22

Good morning, and welcome to today’s edition of Hunky Hump Day.
First, the song, **looks around for Wiser**, which I didn’t realize was a cover and originally written by Randy Newman.

Now for the hunks.
Still dealing with this. Luca Parmitano and Thomas Pesquet are pretty hot, though.

Fake redhead for Carin.

Svimvear, velly nice.

Repeating Jon Bernthal.

Screencap from some show.

Last, but definitely not least.

And that will do for today.

Thanks to Pirate’s Cove for the links every week. Y’all have a good day.

    A story about rockets

    https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/09/years-after-shuttle-nasa-rediscovers-the-perils-of-liquid-hydrogen/

I learned a few things from reading it. I guess I wasn’t paying too much attention to the launch other than Roamy’s updates.

Peel, I may be the least accomplished person here, but I do know all too well the tension of a decent paycheck versus being able to look yourself in the mirror. I hope you can find a way forward.

My cousin began his professional career at NASA at Cape Canaveral, then Houston. At some point he started working for Boeing Aerospace and now he’s an executive working for a different company in Colorado, United Launch Alliance. He’s a few years older than me, Ohio farm boy inspired by the early space exploration days of the 60’s and 70’s.

If anything, looking for alternate employment is a useful exercise for you Mrs Peel. Resume polishing is equal parts bullshit pageantry and useful in learning new skills that others highlight on their own resumes.

I’m on LinkedIn for some reason I can’t remember now and get their update emails. There are a few people who are forever posting shit on their profiles and I suppose they do it to “stand out from the crowd”. Okay, you do you brah

Ben’s check ride with the FAA examiner was supposed to be Friday but got moved to today. He’s been preparing for weeks. Right now it’s overcast and foggy (I believe the aviation industry calls these conditions “socked in”). Anyway, it will clear up as the morning unfolds and we’re hoping for the best.

    Thanks guys. Especially Sobek.

I was going to say there’s probably not much demand for an OF where the chick berates the subscribers for being gross, but with how these things go, there probably is!

I know private employers are just as bad. But I wouldn’t expect better from them. I did expect better from an organization that, until recently, really did try to live up to their values of inclusion (the real kind, not the woke kind that’s actually exclusion), teamwork, and listening to the dissenting voices, especially in matters of safety. (We did a training course on “organizational silence” in the middle of the shot mandates. I was not amused.)

I’ve always known I was a political and religious minority at work. But it’s only the last few years where that’s become a problem.

Peelie, tell me about it. People who really believe they are being righteous when they silence and attack you are terribly common here. There’s no discussing anything with them and no helping them see anything differently.

Ace made an interesting observation a while back that has stuck with me. We may hate someone who harms us, but we really-extra hate the people we ourselves have harmed. Hurting others reminds us what shits we can be, if we’re honest with ourselves.

Instead of seeing ourselves honestly, it’s far easier to see the people we’ve harmed as hated monsters. This is the mindset of the leftish cult members, who will not honestly confront what they are doing to decent people because that’s way harder than just demonizing and disposing of us.

  16. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 9:25 am

So far remote work for Big Ag Corp has been pleasantly apolitical. No real opportunities for water-cooler arguments when we only talk in meetings. Internal twatter is half-full of virtue-signalling wokery, but that’s all it is, and it’s opt in (I opted out). Did have a short gun discussion with another guy I get on well with, but he started it and already knew I was farming sheep at the time, so good guess on his part.

I was watching Tucker last night, and Joy Reid said that if we look up the definition of fascism in the dictionary, you see all the things Brandon said in his speech about republicans there.

I fail to see where the republicans are directing business from the standpoint of govt, since we control 0 houses of govt at this time. but people believe this shit.

a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

Sure looks like it emanates from govt, where WHO is in power?

Seeing the three dog night video up there reminds me……three dog night is playing a dance hall in a town about 1.5 hours away from where I live next month. It’ll hold maybe a thousand folks at one time. I wonder what it feels like for these old fellers who used to play in venues holding 50K+ to be relegated to playing a dance hall.

  24. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 9:55 am

This article notes that “MAGA Republicans” are actually getting support from Dem PACs in some districts. The author naively thinks it’s about having weak opposition at election time.

    https://cnsnews.com/article/washington/susan-jones/if-election-deniers-are-such-threat-why-are-dems-supporting-gop

BZZZT, not hardly. It’s about having no opposition at election time. The game is to have these opponents win primaries and then be disqualified for Insurrectionism.

  25. Comment by Jay in Ames on September 7, 2022 10:02 am

  27. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 10:11 am

I can, it’s still “misinformation” until they fully trot out the “Trump Vaccine!!111!!!” narrative, and thus quashed. They’ve eased up on that to let it percolate, but it’s still hard to share anything real.

I hate that I forgot my extra glass of ice. Now I’ll have warm tea later today. The cooler just won’t hold up.

I’m sure all the ice trays downstairs will be empty when I get there. They were all collected during covid, because ice spreads covid, but even before that no one filled them when they were done. It’s easier just to bring in some from home.

  29. Comment by Jay in Ames on September 7, 2022 10:15 am

  32. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 10:18 am

America invented ice. Anyone trying to keep you from having ice in your drink is a dirty communist.

  33. Comment by Jay in Ames on September 7, 2022 10:21 am

for a while we could work from home, which I took advantage of because they strongly suggested us to get a vaccine, even bringing in a team to inoculate the entire company at no cost. At that time I figured it was one step from being a requirement, and I was in the target group, so I got it. After that everyone still had to mask up, so I stayed home.

Then there were people who were “working” from home who never even logged in to their computer, even though we in IT can actually tell when you log in to a VPN. So instead of educating these morons, everyone was required to be in the office masked up.

    Still no ice.

  36. Comment by Jay in Ames on September 7, 2022 10:31 am

my particular expertise is old .Net code and debugging 50 year old COBOL that has been converted to run on a pc. Actually kind of cool. But it’s more process, and I’m sure I wouldn’t make it past the first interview. I have an associates degree, not even a bachelor. I’m sure I can’t keep up with the kiddies in interview code. Where I’m good is process, and the underlying issues in coding. I’m really good at finding obscure errors because of integrations, not compile time.

  37. Comment by Jay in Ames on September 7, 2022 10:32 am

that’s what keeps me from interviewing, just pure panic at what I don’t know. Even though we are losing people one at a time, and sooner than later I’m sure this is gonna suck.

Fury doesn’t begin to describe the anger. I was buffeted by it but managed to survive with my career and family mostly intact. What happened to the nurses and military and everyone else robbed by these maniacs is beyond criminal.

  42. Comment by Brother Tim on September 7, 2022 11:02 am

They can’t “see it”. They would have to admit they were wrong. Admitting they were wrong is a mortal sin to these folk. It would end life as they know it. The sharks would circle and they would be cast out, hated by their former friends and by those they did harm to.

It’s like what I said once about the contrast between Judas and Paul: They do not believe in redemption. Thus they cannot ever, EVER be wrong, even if the world crumbles because of it, because that is–for them–eternal damnation.

I would feel sorry for them if they weren’t doing so much damage.

  43. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 11:07 am

To be entirely fair, admitting wrongdoing and seeking to earnestly repent is hard no matter who you are or with whom you are seeking to reconcile. Lying to yourself about your fault in a circumstance or your culpability for a wrong is the easiest thing in the world, especially compared to realizing you participated in something so desperately, pervasively evil as what was perpetrated on the world in the ostensible name of Public Health.

  44. Comment by Mrs. Peel on September 7, 2022 11:12 am

What they’ve done to children and to the most vulnerable elderly is beyond my capacity to forgive. Even for people who claim ignorance. There is no fucking excuse for not knowing that forcing masks onto children or isolating elderly people from their families is harmful, unless you are in fact a soulless robot.

  45. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 11:21 am

    FDA approved for children, though.

  46. Comment by Brother Tim on September 7, 2022 11:29 am

It would be one thing if they were capable of one day waking up, saying, “My God! What have I done?”, admitting their failures and seeking to repent and atone. They don’t. I don’t know if it’s because they can’t afford to be wrong or simply can’t conceive they were wrong. Or even if they don’t care.

I’m told I have to forgive, but that does NOT mean allowing them to continue wreaking havoc on the innocent. There must be a reckoning for this…whether they accept it in repentance or not.

  47. Comment by leoncaruthers on September 7, 2022 11:40 am

Last Saturday evening I’m sitting in the gazebo at the marina smoking a cigar, as is my wont, when up comes this chick, who had checked into a transient slip the evening before, and holds out her hand wrapped in a dog poop bag, and in it is a tiny cigar butt. (I have this little device with two needles in it which allows me to smoke them right down to a nub. I like to get my money’s worth.) This fucking cigar butt is a little bigger than your thumbnail.

She interrupts my conversation with another marina pal, and says, “Is this yours?”

I look at it it, shrug my shoulders and say, “Might have been.”

To which she replies, “If I have to pick up my dog’s poop, I shouldn’t have to pick up your cigar butts.”

To which I replied, “You don’t have to, they decompose in the grass. You should have left it.”

To which she says some thing like, “No they don’t, and I’m just trying to keep the marina nice.” And she storms off.

I turn to my pal and say, “Jesus, Paul, people check in one day, and the next day they think they own the fucking place.”

She evidently overhears this, and a bit later walks back to me and says, “I’m a little hard of hearing, but I think I heard you say that I think I “own” this place.”

I say, “If the shoe fits.”

She then launches into how she and her husband have been coming here for years, and people need to take care of the place, and pick up after themselves, blah blah blah.”

To which I reply, “Okay Karen.”

    She then shouts, “WHO’S KAREN?”

Then I say calmly, “Get away from me lady and leave me in peace.”

Happily she stormed off instead of escalating.

Next morning I learn that later that evening, while they were returning to their slip from going out fishing, her hubby fell off the dock into some rocks and cracked some ribs and got bruised pretty badly. By the time I heard about it they were packed up and had shoved off.

Anyway, I’ve had a slip in that marina for five years, and am now assistant harbormaster. Several of my pals and I have taken care of the grounds, (I repaired and stained six Adirondack chairs in the gazebo in June that were about to be thrown out), we get the picnic tables out of storage and distribute them around the grounds, help with dock repairs, etc., and we do it all because we like to help out. Then this cunt has the audacity to confront me over a miniature cigar butt buried in the grass, and treat me like I’d tossed a load of trash on the lawn.

Well, Karen, wherever you are, the karma from your behavior caused your husband’s accident.

I hope he’s meeting with a lawyer right now to divorce your shrewish ass.

Someone should make a fucking movie out of this.

It’s the same mentality that says that a woman should be able to go out nearly naked and not get any unwanted attention.

I live in reality. Any person should be able to go running in the middle of the night. Man or woman. But something bad MIGHT happen to them. A woman might get raped, a guy might get jumped and killed.

The monster who killed the runner – his previous crime was kidnapping a man. So making this into a “crime against Women” (capital W) versus a crime against one person who was a woman. Everything has to be political. SOmetimes it’s not. A criminal doesn’t give a shit about the politics or your “take back the night” demonstrations. They’re FUCKING CRIMINALS.

It’s unsafe for anyone at 0400. Doesn’t matter if it’s a woman or man walking alone or as a couple. It’s prime time for loser criminals and their pickings for victims are slim at that hour which has very few witnesses around.

Drunks are also hurrying home before their coach turns into a pumpkin. There’s countless stories about people walking to an early shift at work being mowed down by cars in the early morning hours.

I’ve had this discussion with my 26 year old niece a few times.

Lily: Women should get to dress however they like without having to fear getting attacked.

Me: Lily, why do you wear tops that show your cleavage?

Lily: Because I like the way they make me look.

Me: So do men. And if you were being honest, you’d say you want men to look at you.

Lily: I should get to dress however I like.

    Me: …

I’ve got it in my mind to re-read Roughing It by Mark Twain, and looking it over stumbled on a marvelous quote:

“When a journalist maligns a citizen, or attacks his good name on hearsay evidence, he deserves to be thrashed for it, even if he is a “non-combatant” weakling; but a generous adversary would at least allow such a lamb the use of his legs at such a time.”

    Prescient, if over-generous.

While driving today I heard a few minutes of the back up hosts on Glenn Beck talking about this Friday being exactly 60 days from Election Day. They then said the customary thing for the FBI is to avoid any big investigation announcements or indictments and the like that would influence the upcoming election.

They’ve shown zero deference to Trump so I’m not holding my breath that they’ll follow convention. They also noted appointing thew special master may have thrown a monkey wrench into their plans to get a quickie indictment out there. Not that it’s stopped the continuous leaks to the press about all the horrible things they found in Melania’s underwear drawer.

The Olive Garden one was when I stopped reading XKCD. It was just too weird for me. I’m still not entirely sure what was supposed to be funny about the idea of people making anatomical drawings of genitalia in an Olive Garden.

No, Lumps, please keep sharing stuff like that. I am arguing with them to not get the f’ing booster or the bivalent shot. “8 mice and no human testing, you really volunteering to be the human test subject? 8 mice! 8! You dissected more than that in your high school biology lab!”

Would you like to guess whether the changes I asked for were, in fact, implemented? Go on. Take a wild guess.

I know how this ends. Went through 14 iterations of a project plan, and somewhere around the 12th, shouted at the poobah making the changes, that I didn’t care any more, that he could write what he wanted, I was done.

So, Anita got a call from Aetna yesterday saying they wanted to bring her 14 frozen meals to help with her recovery! Never heard of such a thing. They told her it’s ’cause she probably felt too bad to cook dinner while she heals. She laughed and told them no thanks, as the freezer is full, the man is the cook, and she’s not eating much anyway…

Peel , I feel what you are saying. I have the same issue. I’m doing work for the government on high temperature electrolyzers for the production of Hydrogen. The hydrogen economy is dreamed up by those ignorant of Thermodynamics. However I deal with a lot of outside companies. There seems to be a lot of institution rot everywhere. I feel for the young ones I’m mentoring. There will be major upheavals in the future since what is happening can not continue. Hard times are coming, if they are not already here.

Yea, no one wants to explain why there are two official portraits. They are somehow blaming Trump. I can only guess on the official backstory. My guess is that Trump didn’t want to have the ceremony – so they went and got those god-awful portraits done and held the ceremony wherever the fuck they did it. But now with Joe struggling, it’s a really good time to do the thing up right – so they got two more done (realizing the other two were – lets be honest – gross) and had another unveiling.

There are some claims about the other portraits belong to National portrait gallery or something, but I never remember there being two OFFICIAL PORTRAIT ceremonies.
