The Poat where we explore the various forms of Metal Music

Sobek usually does an excellent job explaining the history and styles of classical music. I will not be doing that today. I am going to tip our collective toes into the most important style of music out today.

Metal.

We will not wander lost in the metal desert any longer, as I attempt to introduce you into into a few of it’s various forms.

The term “heavy metal” apparently springs from a Steppenwolf song from the 60’s. In the tune everyone knows “Born to Be Wild” the line “heavy metal thunder” – and thus a genre was created. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath are considered the first of the “metal” bands (although Zeppelin has a lot of blues in it), from these Godfather’s of metal we now have a whole wide array to choose from. Avant-garde metal, black metal, celtic metal, death metal, doom metal, Gothic metal, Grindcore, Hair metal (the worst them all), Metalcore, Nu-Metal, Power Metal, Progressive metal (the greatest of all forms), Thrash metal, and then who knows how many more will appear.

Hair Metal is first up today. It is basically unlistenable. It is the pop of metal. I basically hated all of it. All. Of. It.

How is this metal? Someone explain? Grunge rock (not a version of metal) thankfully destroyed this abomination. That’s enough of hair metal. I’d rather forget it ever happened.

Nu-Metal was big in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Think Limp Bizkit. But Papa Roach, and Korn are all considered Nu-metal. It’s got metal riffs with some rapped lyrics and a bit of hip hop (in SOME of the songs). Everyone’s heard this song. Apparently they have a new album out and some say it is pretty good. I haven’t yet listened.

Korn is still in the same genre, but really don’t sound too much like Limp Bizkit:

I think the epitomy of Nu-Metal was probably Linkin Park

Death Metal is another important form of metal, although a bit more obscure. Some put Slipknot in the Nu-metal catagory, but I think it more rightly belongs in with Death Metal and they are one of the biggest names in this genre. Lots of growling and yelling in this form (some cookie monster singing), although some of the better bands have a bit more to their vocals than just screaming. Cory Taylor is actually a very good singer.

If you ever want to start heaving oly lifting, this is the music you need.

Of course, one of my favorite new bands in from this genre is Gojira. I don’t think I’ve shared this one before. Not that any of you listen to any of them anyway.

Progressive metal (sometimes shortened to prog metal) is a broad fusion music genre melding heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud “aggression” and amplified guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or “pseudo-classical” compositions of the latter. One of these experimental examples introduced to modern metal was djent. The music typically showcases the extreme technical proficiency of the performers and usually uses unorthodox harmonies as well as complex rhythms with frequent meter changes and intense syncopation

Progressive Metal of course my favorite, and probably the form of metal that brought me into the entire “genre” of metal in the first place. Everyone give a nice round of applause to the masters …. Tool. This is a song about growing old, so maybe you all should give it a listen:

A lesser known is band in this category that I enjoy very much is Porcupine Tree. This song is 17 minutes but well worth every second:

The last genre I will cover today is “metalcore.” I’m just going to copy a description I found, because it is pretty much dead on:

“Metalcore (or metallic hardcore) is a fusion music genre that combines elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk. As with other styles blending metal and hardcore, such as crust punk and grindcore, metalcore is noted for its use of breakdowns, slow, intense passages conducive to moshing. Other defining instrumental qualities include heavy riffs and stop-start rhythm guitar playing, occasional blast beats, and double bass drumming. Vocalists in the genre typically yell or scream. Some later metalcore bands combine this with clean singing, often during the chorus. Death growls and gang vocals are common. 1990s metalcore bands were inspired by hardcore while later metalcore bands were inspired by melodic death metal. Melodic death metal bands like At the Gates and In Flames influenced later metalcore bands.”

As I Lay Daying is one of the bigger metalcore bands – although not really on the top of my list.

Bring Me The Horizon is pretty big. This is my favorite song of their’s:

The final band I bring to you today from Metalcore and Metal in general is a band out of Australia. They’re not really that widely known over here, but I expect that will change when their next album comes out.

I really hope we all learned something today. Perhaps all you learned is that Sobek knows a lot more about music than me? Perhaps some of you learned that my Poats are trash.

Whatever. Carry on with your Sunday.

  5. I should have put description with prog metal – but then you guys get what you pay for with these things:

  28. Sounds fun Crock.

  29. My impression after watching the first four seconds of the Porcupine Tree video:

The song is 17 minutes long and the drum kit has 47 pieces, so it’s definitely prog. I assume there will be multiple time signature and key changes. At least one bar of music will be written in 17/39.

  30. Missed it by >that< much

  31. Dave in Texas has the coof.

  32. He got it from his pool, didn’t he?

  33. Metal is an abused term. Blue Oyster Cult is considered metal. Their studio albums are anything but metal. I think the origin of BOC being a metal band comes from the “on your feet, or on your knees” live album that contains riffs the studio managers cut out of the LP’s & 8 tracks of the day.
That said, BOC blew Steppenwolf out of the water when they ended “On Your Feet, Or On Your Knees” with their version of Born To Be Wild.

  34. Uh oh. I hope it’s Omicron.

  35. Yes, in all likelihood, Leon. But not the swimming pool, IYKWIMAITTYD.

  36. On your feet, or on your knees is the best live album any group ever produced. I may be wrong about that, but it will take a very persuasive argument to convince me otherwise.

  37. Lumps, me dos. One of our mutual Twitmo friends has been posting prayer requests. I saw his positive post.

  38. TMI3rd just posted for prayers.

  39. It should be illegal for CCP to buy property in US. See also cartels. Bill Gates.

  40. Why do we let other countries, esp foreign adversaries buy any of our real estate?

  41. Still feeling a bit puny from my prep. Think that crap made the gastritis they found, worse…guts at the corners still sore.

Don’t drink, smoke, take pain killers, cut down acidic foods…so it all points to the intense stress/insomnia of the past two years. Really got to work on that.

Doc recommends prilosec, once a day. Anyone take that’s?
I’m always nervous about taking meds due to past bad reactions to pharmaceuticals.

  42. Lumps,

Newhouse is my rep. and he’s retiring. He may have pushed the Anti china buying land legislation, but he also voted to impeach Trump. He thought Hillary was a better candidate in 2016. I imagine the loop holes in the legislation are large or he’s being payed off by big ag. They probably don’t want the competition. He’s a snake and shouldn’t be trusted.

  43. Probiotics, not Prilosec or generic. Supplements. Can’t help ya Beasn

  44. China buying land along the Texas border with Mexico. Fentanyl entry and human trafficking without any impediment

  45. Feel bad for you Teresa. Kids can be so dopey.

My daughter snotted me off this past week. Was before my procedure and I did not need that stress. She’s an adult and acts like an adolescent sometimes. She never acted out when she was one but seems to be having a delayed reaction. I don’t appreciate it, esp after the past 2 years. I have always been there for them and would do almost anything for them. Almost.
I kindly told her so. The ball is in her court.
I am looking into adopting some guinea pigs.

  46. What’s up with TMI?

  47. Oso, I’ve been seeing that probiotics and adopting an anti-inflammatory diet could work…which is the direction I was going anyway.

It’s kinda like when I got a chigger bite in the crease behind my knee. The more I used calamine lotion and neosporin, the angrier the incredibly itchy bite, got. Couple months later, I switched to olive oil and it healed within 2 weeks.

  49. heh, KC can’t score against Pitt, now they give up a fumble.

  52. J’ames, I work at 4am. I need the Chefs to shut down the Squeelers, so I can get sleep.

  53. We keep getting calls wanting us to sell our rental. I’m like, “Sure, you can have it for X”….(what I think would be awesome to get.) They don’t like that.

  54. well KC woke up

  55. wow, Mahomes to Kelce, something you don’t hear a lot of, huh?

  56. Trip to see grandbaby is back on!!!!! 😊😊😊

We negotiated a deal which is acceptable to all parties.

  57. I saw that, TiFW. Very happy for all y’all

  58. We have agreed that – barring something TRULY exceptional – nothing will be pulled at the last minute.

I shared research link with daughter, showing no asymptomatic positive tests in South Africa; she shared a NEWER link showing asymptomatic vaccinated people were testing positive for Omicron.

Knowing that viral loads are higher in people who have been vaccinated – and we had to get the vaccine/booster earlier as part of the deal – we agreed to take a test, just to be safe.

They agreed NOT to change the conditions of the deal going forward.

  59. seriously, that roughing call on Big Ben was a little close.

  60. Mexico, iirc, doesn’t let foreign nationals own land at all. They can only rent it from a Mexican. Mex. I. Co.

Sadly, we don’t live in such a civilized nation.

  61. I have some thoughts about Car In’s poat.

Hair metal isn’t my favorite, but you have to recognize it for what it is and evaluate it on those terms. Hair metal is party music, like Nothing But A Good Time by Poison. If you’re looking for deep or serious, you’re in the wrong place. It’s largely about escapism. If you don’t like hair metal, that may be why. I think that’s why it was so thoroughly destroyed by the grunge movement. But any party music can potentially have this problem. If it isn’t fresh, it fades away pretty quickly. I love the song Happy by Pharrell, and the time was you couldn’t avoid that song no matter where you went, but I always knew it would disappear in time because it’s usually “serious” songs that last.

It’s interesting that you chose Heaven to illustrate hair metal, because I don’t think that’s very representative of what hair metal was about. Sure, every album had to have it’s power ballad, and so Heaven is representative that way, but it doesn’t get the genre as a whole. Even sticking with Warrant, Cherry Pie is a much better example.

Jani Lane, who wrote Cherry Pie, came to hate that song with all his heart. He didn’t want to write it. He had already recorded Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and intended that as the title track of the album (and it’s a much, much better song). But Aerosmith had just done Love In An Elevator, so the record label insisted Lane write something like that. He and the band crapped out Cherry Pie, and the label insisted that be the album title and lead single.

That wasn’t Warrant’s only problem. By the time they came around and started writing hair metal, the genre was pretty much spent. The band sounded like a copy of a copy of a copy because that’s all the record labels would sign. If you wanted a record deal, you had to sound like hair metal and couldn’t stay too far from the formula. So Warrant sounds like the last gasp of a dying genre.

Here’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which is really worth a listen. Think how much different, musically and thematically, this is from Cherry Pie. If Warrant had successfully stood their ground against the record executives things might have turned out very differently for them.

  62. TiFW, I hope your daughter keeps her word and that you have a fantastic visit with your grandson.

The band sounded like a copy of a copy of a copy because that’s all the record labels would sign
This reminds me of the youtube of eight country songs that were all terrible and cookie-cutter, but that’s what Nashville was churning out.

  63. Seeing Fauci’s financial disclosure confirms he is in this for the power. He’s 81, which is already past average lifetime. Actuarial table says he can expect 7.9 years left. He’s sitting on a $350K/year retirement package and over $10M in savings. GTFO.

  64. Dinah’s empathy relieved Penelope.

  65. Knowing that viral loads are higher in people who have been vaccinated

And if you weren’t demanded to be jabbed ….

  66. Seems like well over half of those dinosaurs in the house and senate are in it for the power….and enriching younger family members.
Other than his wife, does fauci have kids implanted in government?

  67. Nice job c arin

  68. Now I must hie thee mom and remove snow.

  69. Meh, I get that I could have chosen something other than a power ballad but those literally epitomize everything I hated about them.

And every power ballad sounded exactly the same. ANd they played them over and over and over again on the radio.

No, I stick by my choice.

  70. true believers think they are on the right side, right fauxchi?

  71. https://www.yahoo.com/news/triple-vaxxed-85-old-mother-100031840.html

I get that the U.S. health care system is under siege from the highly transmissible omicron variant that is sickening even triple-vaxxed people like my parents. But at the moment, American health care feels like the Wild West.

I put the bulk of the blame firmly on the anti-vaxxers. They are closely followed by the people who wear their masks as chin straps. But if I’m being honest, President Joe Biden’s administration carries some of the blame.
