“Money” by Barrett Strong was Tamla Records’ first hit. Tamla was the precursor to Motown.

Yes, I remember when it came out, and I really liked it. In those days you put this little black (mostly) disc with a big hole in the center on your record player, and it spun around, and music came out.

  3. Comment by Hotspur on January 5, 2022 9:41 am

Then the Beatles covered it and fucked it all up.

Fill your freezer while you can:

They aren’t wrong about the interference. I cannot legally sell you lamb from my freezer. I can only sell you a live animal. Federal and state law.

why do we need to invest yet more money in something that man has been doing for centuries? Lockers around here are booked out. Lots of farmers are starting to sell direct. I was gonna buy that way next time, when I get the freezer cleared out. Which never happens.

Spent a couple hours chipping ice out, and cataloging what I had. Only got to 2 shelves. but I found some stuff!

oh great, Tom Vilsack is secretary of agriculture. Ex Iowa governor, that spent a surplus that took years to build up. Typical dem.

  11. Comment by leoncaruthers on January 5, 2022 10:00 am

There is a food safety angle at work, but it’s way overblown and already covered by tort law. If I sell you tainted meat, you can sue me. If it kills you, you can get me arrested. It is entirely, firmly in my interest to sell you safe meat that you enjoy, and entirely contrary to my interest to do otherwise. It started under the mantle of safety, but it’s just another protection scheme that benefits faceless corps over family farms.

  12. Comment by Hotspur on January 5, 2022 10:00 am

regulation kills business. Sometimes it’s needed, but most times you just line the pockets of the big boys. create a bureaucracy filled with otherwise unemployable people who then have not only the power to make others squirm, which they thoroughly delight in, but also the ability to perpetuate themselves and write themselves huge salaries and benefits totally beyond their worth.

There, I fixed it for you.

    Government is the devil.

  14. Comment by Hotspur on January 5, 2022 10:05 am

Food “safety” is probably the best example of government bloat and overreach. Leon points out good reasons why our regulations are mostly unnecessary.

Travel to Europe and see how their markets operate and how food is handled and sold, safely, then justify these pear-shaped assholes who can’t speak proper English telling us what we can and cannot do.

  15. Comment by Hotspur on January 5, 2022 10:07 am

It was summed up nicely in one of the memes yesterday. “Fifty years ago an owner’s manual told you how to adjust the valves. Now it tells you not to drink the contents of the battery.”

THAT is what lawyers and politicians have accomplished.

  16. Comment by leoncaruthers on January 5, 2022 10:08 am

Were I to start farming commercially, I’d need at least 3 LLCs. One to farm hay and vegetables, one to farm live animals for sale, and one to perform harvest and packing on animals ‘delivered’ to me, and a not-insubstantial part of my work would be ensuring the documents were above-board for the transfer of legal ownership of an animal prior to slaughter.

I absolutely could not sell meat from my freezer, nor could I harvest animals and then process them myself for later sale as packaged goods. That’s how stupid this is. I could do the same thing with soap made from goat’s milk with no problem, or applesauce for that matter, but not meat.

  17. Comment by leoncaruthers on January 5, 2022 10:15 am

THAT is what lawyers and politicians have accomplished.

There’s a whole lotta suits at the car companies that would prefer to have you pay $X/month for a car subscription in perpetuity that can only be maintained at the dealership, and that’s a big factor here as well.

  30. Comment by mare on January 5, 2022 11:01 am

Mitch, I’m going to say something that will sound cold and cruel but is actually reality.

I’ve had to say this to my husband’s sisters and my own family.

Our parents are going to die of something. We cannot prevent all accidents and oftentimes parents are actively working against our efforts. Your dad may be hell-bent on ending up (forever) in the hospital with a broken hip. Or an arm that won’t heal. Or a horrible concussion.

You can only do so much.

  31. Comment by Brother Tim on January 5, 2022 11:05 am

I get where Mitch is. I was there myself. I didn’t see what was about to happen with Dad at the end. My oldest brother did. I was too close, had too much wrapped up in “…and after this hospital stay, you’ll be better and we can get back to our current normal.” The Lord had other plans in mind (ones I now understand were far more merciful).

Don’t beat yourself up. You’re doing your best but there’s only so much ultimately one man can do. At some point it just won’t be enough. Love him best you can and make ready for that day, whatever form it takes.

Listening to Rogan/McCullough. He says the cytokine storm (sic?) attaches to fat cells, which is why this affects obese patients more. They manufacture more virus.

but doesn’t everyone have the same amount of fat cells, it’s the reserves that make you fat? Hmm.

  36. Comment by leoncaruthers on January 5, 2022 11:39 am

No Jay. Fat cells divide and grow in number with greater levels of obesity.

  37. Comment by Jay in Ames on January 5, 2022 11:40 am

that definitely explains it then. Wonder why I thought the number stayed the same, hmm.

  38. Comment by leoncaruthers on January 5, 2022 11:46 am

There was a lot of popular press about the number of fat cells being able to go up but not down, so you might have remembered the latter half of that as “can’t be changed”, but it turns out to not be true either. Fat cells will undergo apoptosis under the right circumstances, it’s just hard for most people to make that happen (extended fasting/periods of ketosis).

The press about the number never going down coincided with the invention of liposuction, so you can draw your own conclusions about that.

Chimney sweep is here. It appears our furnace vent has been compromised and the flue is damaged. Whole thing has to be relined. Ugh.
Apparently systems like ours can create a lot of condensation of sulfuric acid inside the vent when it is run through a masonry chimney in a cold climate.
Should have been getting it cleaned every other year. Installers never told us that.

Finally got an update on Dad’s condition: he did have a fever when admitted so I was right when I thought he felt hot. So he’s sick. Probably the fauci flu, but results aren’t back yet. No head trauma (which I feared as he did have a small cut near his eye from the fall and the way he was positioned when I found him.) Some fluid in his lungs – low oxygen level could have contributed to his disorientation and unsteadiness. Also he has COPD anyway so, another factor. Also he drinks too much and that definitely contributed. They have him on antibiotics and oxygen. No room yet though. Can’t see him either.

Hotspur, why do you say it is a scam? I walked this guy down to the cellar, he opened the cleanout at the base of the chimney and we saw it is full of pieces of masonry and flue tile.

He looked up, found the big envelope the furnace installer shoved into the floor joists ten years ago, and showed us in the owner’s manual of our furnace where it says not to vent into a masonry chimney.

He went up on to the roof with his camera, took video of the busted up shit on the outside of the chimney and also dropped the camera into the chimney a few feet and observed that there were gaps in the flue, meaning it was venting into the chimney. He came down and showed me the video that he took while up there, including panning out to the street where my car was, to prove it was a video of my chimney, today.

Coincidentally, sometimes in the evening when I am sitting in my recliner by the pellet stove which resides in the first floor fireplace that is part of the same chimney, I suddenly get completely congested and my sinuses get packed up as if I’m having an allergy attack. I have been having this problem off and on for over a year at least. This happens no other place in the house. Scott was the one who remembered this happening to me and mentioned it to the guy.

Friend of mine’s dad just passed a few days ago at the relatively young age of 60. He had the Rona and in the process of working up the clots he was having discovered he had Renal CA. Ended up throwing a clot and needed a tube to breath. Pneumothorax, etc. Tough way to go. 5 kids, many grandkids.

My vaxed and recently boosted friend just tested positived for the ‘rona.

She had a headache. Her employer made her test. So fucking stupid.

Regulation kills business you say? Number 1437 of why I can’t stand the motherfuckers in the swamp.

“In the past, the IRS has only required online sellers to submit a 1099-K tax form if they partake in at least 200 transactions worth, in total, at least $20K. Next year, this is all going to change. Sellers who make at least $600 in 2022 will have to file a 1099-K in 2023 no matter how many transactions they engage in. $20K to $600 is a pretty significant difference.”

I guarantee you that most sellers on eBay are just trying to get rid of their crap for more than garage sale prices…or attempt to recoup what they paid.

Srsly, are these fuckers going to be monitoring garage sales next?

I was feeling rather puny this morning. Like I was coming down with something. Weird head pressure like a cold wanted to take over and didn’t feel well. Worried something will hit and I’ll have to cancel my roto-rootering.
Took some C and zinc and hoping for the best.

The NAC & quercetin I ordered are taking their time getting here, AFTER they were sold out last time I checked… so I ordered some from the expensive place to get here Friday.
    Meh.

Or is it a case of us just trying to perfect the existing technology before producing them for deployment?

It’s a case of focusing more on tranny’s feelings. We’re fucked.

My Uncle Tom never smoked. He has eluded the family lung cancer stat. He has lived long enough for the dementia to kick in. He’s deaf. His daughter tried to tell him about my mom. He remembers living with us in TX. He is forgetting how to sign. My Grammo forgot her English. God is great. Prayer is great.

I think this covid bullshit is going to change trade shows. SIG figured out their sales are great even without the show last year, and they save $2.5 million. by skipping it.

I think we’ll still have trade shows but only in red states. That way, you get rid of the union bullshit as well as the covid bullshit. Those union guys in Las Vegas are shitty, and they know you can’t do anything about it.

Egads, the hospital is absolutely mobbed. Finally got through to Dad with the aide of a great security guard at the hospital who helped him with his phone. He feels fine, now. He remembers nothing of last night. I went through it all and he was like “Huh.”

Still waiting for a room though. He has edema, somewhat enlarged heart, some fluid in his lungs, something up with his sinuses. Still don’t know about Kung Flu. That said his fever is gone and oxygen level is back up. We have a referral to ENT doctor, blood tests and additional meds to look forward to when he gets out. I expect tomorrow.

Been a rough start to the year. Thanks for all y’all’s thoughts and prayers.

NORKs now have mobile missile launchers…by train…apparently hypersonic. Not clear on if the missile or train is hypersonic.

Train is definitely not hypersonic, which is like Mach 5 at sea level. Only the pointy end of the missile is hypersonic (the reentry vehicle).

My bet is that the Norks have classic ballistic reentry vehicles, but don’t have scramjets or even maneuvering capabilities. 1950s technology.

The Russkis and Chinese have powered hypersonic vehicles which can actually fly. That’s what we’ve been dinking around with for 30 years, but never actually bringing to the field.
