I sorta remember using some sort of sausage for it, but it’s been along time. All the recipes I see now use corned beef or pastrami. But really, it was the cheese and the sauerkraut that really gave it the flavor. A place near me sells sauerkraut brats … I bet those would work well.
Maybe not all neighbors are cool about just sawing twigs off their shrubs and pine trees to help you make a door wreath. If they aren’t, you can be assured that they are cunts. For fuck’s sake, trees and shrubs grow like gangbusters every Spring. Nobody will ever notice.
———
When I moved in here there were a few older women in town who would come by in the fall and ask to pick the highbush cranberries for jelly and bittersweet and other assorted pine branches for wreathes. The lady who used to live here was a long time resident of the town and knew everyone. It took years for my house to become mine and not “The Foley House”. They stopped coming by gradually and may, in fact, be dead at this point.
I’m thinking a holiday wreath can be a similar neighborhood treasure hunt type thing. Just make a hoop of wire fencing and tie that crap up to the frame with some soft wire and ribbons.

We live in the Saudi Arabia of pine trees so that’s not a problem. You lost me at hoop of wire fencing, soft wire and ribbons.
Making wreaths is a traditional seasonal industry around Maine and it’s common for women to “go tipping” in the woods to get material for making them. From what I’ve heard it can be like the female version of deer camp. To preserve the pine trees the women take “just the tip” of a branch. I’ll just leave that one there.
Making a casserole sounds good but I need to get better at scaling down recipes. Paula and I will eat it for a couple of meals but then it gets pushed to the back of the fridge and ends up being expensive garbage in a week.
I now have my sister’s ornaments and my mom’s to add to all the things made by my kids and acquired through the years. I just can’t imagine any other tree in my house.
So, apparently Cook Orientation is … hard. Not everyone makes it. Ethan is stressed and worried. At this point, everyone is superfit, so not being the BEST is making him question. His 4 mile souffle shuffle in the Ocean was 86 min – had to be under 90, but some got low 80s. His O-course time was 10:40 and passing is 15 min so that’s stressing him. I read up and the 15 min is passing for phase one, and 11 min (he’s already under that) for phase 2 – which doesn’t come until after hell’s kitchen week. He’s got plenty of time to get faster. Apparently at the end, they’re running it under 8 min. Course record is something like 4:30, and ain’t anyone breaking that anytime soon.
I thought orientation was just introducing them to all the new things. You know, the immersion blender. The sausage maker.
But apparently they usually lose up to a dozen or so.
The whole process is just so crazy. I can’t take this. lol. If he makes it through this, I’m going to be a wreck the first day. they lose a LOT that day. Probably make them attempt a meringue .
Carin, it’s not the best times or highest (__________) or any of that, he’ll make the cut time-wise or do enough pull-ups, it’s the guys who don’t give up who make it.
I’ve been trying to find stats on % of people in hospitals in the NE for covid of vaxxed vs unvaxxed. There’s nothing. Just opinions of doctors linked endlessly with no real data.
Sure New Hampshire is 90% vaxxed but 100% in hospitals aren’t.
I tried following the links from a few different stories and ended up with a Dr making that statement ‘I can assure you most of the patients here are unvaccinated.’
Because there’s no data you pretty much have your answer.
I also read an interesting study from Johns Hopkins that showed there’s no statistical difference in mortality in the US in 2019, 2020, and 2021 (so far).
They also showed that the death rates in older people is the same as its always been. People are dying but they likely would have passed anyway. Pretty interesting stuff. It’s like there are laws of nature.
I would read it this way: 28% of those hospitalized for covid were fully vaccinated.
That’s fucking bananas.
And if you follow the logic that it makes covid more mild, we’d have to assume that a much larger proportion that test positive are fully vaccinated. Probably close to 50%?

I’m just so … nervous for him. If he makes it though (some people are saying that they choose who goes through, but I can’t find verification for that – it seems they are always changing things) – I’ll be a wreck those first two days of actual cooking school. those are both big drop out days.
From what I’m being told now, though, they take the top X guys from orientation from the three major events . 180 is around the number. So it isn’t just grit. You gotta be beating folks in those events. I thought the minimum standards (which would be excellent for us normies) was enough physically to get you in. Apparently not. I think he’s worried that some guys beat him in the swim, although I have no idea how many.

I think there’s a lot of reasons that people are leaving healthcare Jay. Mainly the mandate, burnout from all the craziness of the last 2 years and other reasons I’d list if I knew them. The OR is implementing a restriction on elective cases that will require hospitalization now. They claim it’s because they’re overwhelmed with Covid cases but low staffing could be an equally plausible explanation.
One of my x-ray friends and his brother were approved for a religious exemption at the 11th hour. I think the hospital waited as long as possible to look at the numbers before handing out exemptions. Pretty sure they realized they were fucked if they disappeared as many employees as they would have had to for no vaccine.
As MJ mentioned earlier it’s next to impossible to get accurate numbers of admissions for Covid related illnesses and vax rates. They promote low hospitalizations among the vaxxed but since Maine is pretty highly vaxxed, percentage wise, it’s hard to square that circle as they say.
Our helper’s roommate/ upstairs renter is fully vaccinated and has covid. And he’s really very sick. Young guy, 30s. He’s living in quarantine on the top floor of the house.
Our helper is bringing him his meals to his door because the guy’s girlfriend- also vaccinated, and who has had covid in the past too- is afraid to bring him food.
I don’t believe the BS that the hospitalized are mostly unvaxxed. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts they consider you ‘unvaccinated’ if you haven’t had a recent booster.
The main thing that is keeping people like the guy’s girlfriend from saying out loud to anybody, “If I had the disease AND the shots, why am I still afraid? CLEARLY THIS MEDICINE DOESN’T FUCKING WORK,” is that once people have committed to a course of action, they are loathe to admit they may have not done the right thing. The truth is beating itself against their thick, thick, skulls but they resolutely Will Not See It.
Years from now, if this ever gets unpacked and the truth becomes Truth for all of society, including the lockdowns, the abuse, the Karening, the masks…there will still be a lot of assholes saying they nobly did the right thing for all of society by licking the boot and forcing others to lick the boot too.
I don’t believe the BS that the hospitalized are mostly unvaxxed. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts they consider you ‘unvaccinated’ if you haven’t had a recent booster.
I’m convinced this is the only reason for the “booster”.
It also means that the sudden uptick of heart issues and strokes is among the unvaccinated.
there will still be a lot of assholes saying they nobly did the right thing for all of society by licking the boot and forcing others to lick the boot too
Anyone says that shit in earshot of me after I hit 80 or so is getting old-man bootstomped.
Note on deaths (12/08/2021): Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website. As a result of the most recent assessment, today’s data includes 185 additional deaths identified by this methodology. ”
Looking at the Michigan hospital covid stats, they have moderate numbers of covid patients, but not a terribly high number in the ICUs.
States biggest hospital has 157 Covid patients (i’m sure some of them aren’t even admitted, but in their weird “watching” rooms) – only 18 are in the ICU.
Some interesting numbers coming out of Great Britain:
A similar situation was described for the UK. Between week 39 and 42, a total of 100,160 COVID-19 cases were reported among citizens of 60 years or older. 89.821 occurred among the fully vaccinated (89.7%), 3.395 among the unvaccinated (3.4%) [[3]]. One week before, the COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 was higher among the subgroup of the vaccinated compared to the subgroup of the unvaccinated in all age groups of 30 years or more.
Or they could have one of the common colds that is caused by another coronavirus.
The Delta variant is technically COVID-20, and the Omicron variant is COVID-21. If you go by the naming convention, anyway. COVID-19 is virtually gone:

I’ve noticed that the trend for a LOT of people seems to be more toward the … themed christmas tree. All a certain color, etc.
When did this become a thing?
——-
About 70 years ago, my Mom use to do it. Absolutely beautiful.
Again – its not that people never did it. My grandma did it. It just seems like EVERYONE does it now. All my IRL friends have a coordinated tree.
In Grosse Pointe – people would have coordinated trees around their house, and then a more … personalized one as their main tree.
I now have my sister’s ornaments and my mom’s to add to all the things made by my kids and acquired through the years. I just can’t imagine any other tree in my house.
For the last two years, I haven’t put any ornaments on our tree. Just the lights. Just haven’t cared enough to do it.
And it’s pretty enough without.
sauerkraut, ewwww
one of the few things I don’t eat. not like your mom
mom left hers up all year this year, just because. decorated it with the season. July 4 tree was pretty cool

A tree with green and red is also a theme color scheme.
Right. It’s dealing with the stress and the mental part.
Metal? His mom listens to Tool.
I’m not saying he’s unprepared, just that it ain’t easy even if you are.

I’m convinced this is the only reason for the “booster”.
It also means that the sudden uptick of heart issues and strokes is among the unvaccinated.
Also worth noting: a medium pizza will elicit a “strong immune response” from anyone with a modest sensitivity to wheat or casein.

Anyone says that shit in earshot of me after I hit 80 or so is getting old-man bootstomped.
Today’s Michigan Death total – 200.
But …
”
So … `15
Looking at the Michigan hospital covid stats, they have moderate numbers of covid patients, but not a terribly high number in the ICUs.
States biggest hospital has 157 Covid patients (i’m sure some of them aren’t even admitted, but in their weird “watching” rooms) – only 18 are in the ICU.
Only a few hospitals in the state are at 100% occupancy. Either small hospitals, or ones that run high percentages anyway.

It’s December, couldn’t those covid people in the hospital be regular flu? Or does that not exist anymore?
Or they could have one of the common colds that is caused by another coronavirus.
The Delta variant is technically COVID-20, and the Omicron variant is COVID-21. If you go by the naming convention, anyway. COVID-19 is virtually gone:

The Covid is Thy Illness and thou shalt not have any other illness before The Covid.
Everything is fake.
I’m watching “Bells of St. Mary’s” for the umpteenth time. Trying to get motivated to go bake some cookies. I’m staying up until midnight to watch the IXPE launch.
Mitchell, I don’t mean to sound sentimental, but I’m really glad that you were kidnapped by goblins and forced to produce comments here a few times a day in exchange for thin gruel and hardtack.
Hey, thanks for the reminder, lumps, I don’t give those goblins enough credit.
That reminds me, I need to binge Goblin Slayer over Christmas break.
100% of the 90% of the 32% of the 123% can lick on these balls.
I’m tired of the shitty data. It takes forever to find decent info.
Ethan’s cooking class was on Bret Baier’s show tonight. As an entire class all blurred out.
Wat. I’m supposed to get gruel and hardtack?? Son of a…
hmmm. Ingratitude.
*motions to the goblins*
Pro tip: let the hard tack soften in warm gruel for 4-5 min before eating.
I finished reading Brave New World. It was full of Shakespeare references (hence the title) so then I re-read Romeo and Juliet. I’m a bucket of smiles right now.
