Strong work Thermadin. Truly earned the man card with that water heater replacement. You truly earned the right to carve the turkey after the blessing today.

Clean, hot water on demand. My ancestors would’ve sacrificed first born for clean hot water on demand. I been to not nice places, most mornings when I get in the shower I still marvel for a moment at the implications of clean, hot water on demand.

Sometimes I get frustrated by the struggle of life in general, forgetting that all things considered, I live pretty fucking high on the hog compared to earlier generations.

What most dont consider is that it could all go away fairley easily and it doesn’t exist everywhere.

I hope everyone enjoys the day.

I’ve had a really nice visit here in Utah, had a lot of good conversations with this branch of my family, parents, sister and her kids and grandkids. The state of things inevitably comes up in conversations, nobody here is near me in the political spectrum of opinion but they are all pretty pessimistic in outlook. We are a people of putting your head down and grinding away, hoping for the best outcomes by doing what we think is right.

Lumpy’s advice to not talk to the zombies was invaluable to me over the last few days, I refused to engage. I can still be crazy but lovable uncle Pup without telling these people what I think about their Trump-hate and vaccine love. I love them, I’m sorry they are being manipulated by bad actors with malicious agendas, but “Oh? Hunh.” and a change of subject is all you are gonna get out of me zombie.

I’m thankful for all the little things that make my life awesome. I feel lucky every day. I love you guys, I hope your bag of dicks runneth over.

    Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

I follow a couple Discords that seem to be Euro-trash-heavy. In addition to general derision of the US for all manner of things (vaccination rates, guns, Thanksgiving, the usual), it sounds like there are very real rumblings about Russia moving on Ukraine in the near future. One imagines Putin wouldn’t feel quite so frisky if the same Euro-trash hadn’t been rooting for the turnip now planted in the WH.

I like to think of everything that we have and take for granted that many others don’t. inexpensive power that’s reliable, internet access, smartphones, 1000 TV channels. then laugh about how oppressed we are. I read that someone wants to change the name of thanksgiving. they haven’t been thankful in their whole life. they just take. it’s sad but we don’t have to be like them.

My oven doesn’t hold heat long enough to make Jay’s suggestion work. So here’s what I’m going to do: 5 minutes a pound at 500°, then set temp to 300° and watch until meat reaches 125°. May eat early or may eat late, but eat we will.

  48. Comment by Jimbro on November 25, 2021 2:21 pm

I do on rare occasions but just use the blade thingie. I’ve heard the burr is superior from the coffee “experts”. We go through too much coffee to grind it daily although I do have more time on my hands these days and it may be a nice switch. I was just thinking of ordering some more coffee … it’s going to be whole beans dammit!

Lots to be thankful for today. In a perverse way, I’m thankful for COVID-19 today. It lead to getting the better half out of the PT facility from hell last night. Long story that involved verbal fighting with staff nurses, and other things. Short story is she has respiratory issues and yesterday the place discovered a COVID case in house. Not sure if it was staff or a resident, I’m leaning toward staff as the place has security that matches level 4 DOC. Keeping it short, I told them she’s going home, safer there than in a facility under a covid lockdown. Then the arguments ensued. Ended with my telling a particularly obnoxious nurse if she’d like to speak to my attorney it could be arranged. Anywho, she’s back home, gonna have a lobster and we’ll figure out the next step after the holiday is over with.

  71. Comment by lumps on November 25, 2021 6:16 pm

Find a pirated version of ATK pumpkin pie recipe online. It’s great because you prebake the crust and pour hot pie filling into it while the crust is still warm. Cuts the baking time a LOT by putting it all together hot to begin with, and that prevents the crust from going soggy. They also add some yam to it to improve the flavor.

  72. Comment by roamingfirehydrant on November 25, 2021 6:25 pm

I am happy with how everything turned out for Thanksgiving dinner. I am trying the Instapot method of making turkey frame soup (onion, celery, carrots, and mindful of the max level for water, followed by straining the broth, adding frozen mixed vegetables and some of the turkey meat). Nice to just hit the button and go do something else.

14.5 lb. turkey for five people, sent Rocketboy home with leftovers, some set aside for Mini-me, some for the soup, and some for Thanksgiving 2.0.

  82. Comment by Car in on November 25, 2021 7:03 pm

Yea, Lumps – it was a wide open door for me to bring that issue up. Lots of grocery stores in Detroit have closed in the last 30 years due to theft.

But she’s emotional, and we were having such a good holiday. Stare of death ended his line of inquiry. Its not as if SHE brought it up, he did.

    He deserved the bad-boy stare.

  83. Comment by Car in on November 25, 2021 7:03 pm

I just have a blade grinder.

  84. Comment by lumps on November 25, 2021 7:06 pm

…and in the case of large grocery chains, a former client of mine (who sets up grocery stores for a living) said that as soon as they express an interest in building on a parcel of land in an urban area, the community organizers descend to make sure they hire specific people and it’s a union shop and those specific people don’t have to work much and can never be fired and also those people will basically be running the place, not actual management. And the company will be donating to the causes that the specific people dictate.

It’s small-c communism. AKA organized crime.

  85. Comment by Jay in Ames on November 25, 2021 7:08 pm

  88. Comment by lumps on November 25, 2021 7:12 pm

I seem to remember a historical note about Ronaldus Magnus and his team examining the nature of the Soviet Union, and coming to the realization that it operated similar to organized crime. Take over an area’s businesses, drain them dry, and be obliged to then conquer more territory to do more of the same.

Dinner at my step sons place. They did an awesome job.
One turkey done in the oven.
    One in a deep fryer.
    Pies.
    Etc.
    very nice time.

Paula bought our turkey last week and as I prepped it today I looked at the label for the weight to get an estimate of cooking time. It was 16 pounds but the thing that surprised me was the price, a little over $12.00. It was your standard bowling ball frozen turkey with the pop up timer but after hearing about all the shortages I was a little taken aback that it was so inexpensive. Must have been a loss leader to get shoppers in the store to buy expensive squash or something.

We were pieless but TBH I didn’t care because after a full breakfast at 1000 I was stuffed just with one plate of turkey/stuffing/mashed at 1730

If you don’t care to give yahoo the click, it’s about an LA firefighter who, when given his vax mandate letter of noncompliance, dropped trou and wiped his ass with it.

DeSantis should eminent domain her house and doze it into the sea. She has let Kalifornia be turned into a shithole and she should be made to live out her sad pathetic life in that shithole…
