My Favorite Put Down

I read a post on the mothership and started laughing at a few of the pejorative names that were tossed around and it got me thinking about funny phrases and words. I know what you’re thinking…is this going to be the first in a long line of piscatorial posts or might we venture into a realm unknown?

The answer of course, is why not both? Just kidding. I think we can safely shelve our admiration for fisherman, old men, the sea, and how their bounty is turned into a delicious fried patchwork of amphibious parts. Today we embark upon a mission to call forth our favorite malicious insults.

For those of you with keys to this POS blog, I’ll put a few pictures of MJr in the POL tab. I’ve been meaning to do that for a long time but as I get a bit older I find myself wondering if it’s a good idea – even behind a pw protected page.

Honestly, I don’t care if a singer writes her own songs or not. Yo-Yo Ma doesn’t compose the works he performs, but he performs them beautifully. Singing is an instrumental skill and composition is an entirely different skillset. Give two singers the same song and they will interpret it differently, sometimes radically.

  20. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 9:07 am

Musically, talented men often surround themselves with other talented folks, to create something even better. To push. To create music in collaboration because it’s better than what they can do alone. The synergy of being around other talented people, to create something together. I could list band after band that does this.

Women, don’t. They want to be the name, and hire or pay folks to help them glorify their own career.

That’s why women suck and I generally don’t care for much music created by women. The ones that I do are in bands.

True. but Yo Yo ma is unbeatable. He is the GOAT. No one is better. This gal? As mentioned above, has zero range. I have a “thing” against simple singers. Singing is skill and one needs talent- but the best singers can still be boring. And a great voice doesn’t make them an artist . A creative force. I think a lot of singers want to present themselves as more than they are. And i generally prefer artists – what is created when a bunch of true artists get together.

Efficiency is almost always had at a significant cost to resilience.

  36. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on April 29, 2021 9:42 am

The relationship between efficiency and fragility is probably best described as a convex function: there’s some level of efficiency in a system where fragility is minimized, but if you deviate from that point by much the system’s fragility increases rapidly.

That’s why I caveated with “almost always”. There were massive efficiency gains made in basically every proven technology that actually increased resilience (ICEs are a great example), but those early gains are long past for most technologies, and logistics is as old as war. Unless and until we get beamed-power sats or pocket-sized MW power supplies, logistics is as close to settled science as anything can be.

Smog in China and giant piles of heavy metal poison in Bolivia are a direct result of US environmental policy.

Okay, China might still have smog, but less of it, because they are a coal importer and only need it to power the factories that make shit for Apple and WalMart.

In the case of battery manufacturing, the enviros kept getting wackier and wackier, until manufacturers just decided it was easier to make them in china/other asian countries. So instead of allowing the US to make it cleaner, they forced it overseas. Where anything goes.

  48. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on April 29, 2021 10:34 am

Okay, China might still have smog, but less of it, because they are a coal importer and only need it to power the factories that make shit for Apple and WalMart.

Not only that, but they wouldn’t be moving hundreds of millions of people from the countryside into the cities for that factory work, increasing air pollution through higher density living.

The Chinese are arguably just a fragile, if not more fragile, than the West. They need constant economic expansion to keep those millions upon millions of workers employed and happy.

When the eventual collapse comes, it’s going to be very ugly all around the world.

it’s easy for superstars to come together, once they have “made it”. The little guys need more exposure before they can share the spotlight . Traveling Wilburys was another ensemble group.

  52. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 10:44 am

Pop stars do all sorts of songs where they appear with other artists. With all their names listed. And usually it’s not really a collaboration of talent like the traveling wilburys or them crooked vultures, or SOund City, etc etc. It’s – “hey, you want to add a vocal track to my song and i’ll put your name alongside mine?”

  53. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 10:45 am

How many bands are fronted by women even? Not that many. Usually a female wants to be a singer/a star. She doesn’t lower herself by joining a band.

There are a few, but not many. Most female “singers” want to be the main show.

  62. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 11:08 am

It hasn’t happened. Because they’re about personal fame and not creation. To flesh this out (I need a brick wall) – I think it has to do with the industry itself. It promotes beautiful women with passable voices who they can market. The true artist (who would be more driven to create music for the sake of music) never makes it big. Male performers aren’t as … penned down by the attractive factor. Thus a true talent/artist who surrounds himself with other artists can make it despite the negative forces of the industry that is constantly looking for it’s attractive front man.

  69. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 11:22 am

Well, bands do that all the time, so that’s not really what I’m talking about. While they are developing, before they hit it big – members are kicked out as they find better replacements. The story of how AIC got Layne is a good one.

  76. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 11:32 am

And one of the reasons it works is that so many women (I’ll be the misogynist today, I’m ok with that) don’t really care so much about the quality of the music. They want their star to be someone they look up to. Who they want to be. And they all want to be beautiful. When they sing the vapid songs at the concerts, they briefly are that star.

The whole thing is just depressing.

The Wind-up A&R told HitQuarters that, although they already exhibited huge talent, they were still young and needed to be developed, and “given the time and opportunity they could deliver a breakthrough sound.”[12] Once signed the band were relocated to Los Angeles, given an apartment and rehearsal space and enrolled in a gym. Lee was given acting and vocal classes. After almost two years producer Dave Fortman was brought in to produce their first album Fallen.[“

LeeAnn Womack (who is fairly good looking) goes out of her way to differentiate making records and making music. She says making records has little to do with making music. It’s all about “making product”. Maybe why she’s never hit it BIG.

I don’t know when the start was. There have always been “singers”. Usually they were people with phenomenal voices. The ones I’m mostly referring to were more pop creations, with meh voices. Madonna perhaps was the beginning? Entertainers, not really artists.

Being pretty doesn’t mean you don’t have talent. It means you’re suspect. lol.

And when I look behind your name to see how many people it takes to prop up your career – there’s the story.

Josh Homme surrounds himself with talented people so they can create wonderful things together. He doesn’t have hordes of people who are the actual creative talent propping him up.

How can you tell the difference between when a male musician is collaborating with talent or being propped up by it?

  114. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 1:04 pm

I tell by checking out who writes his songs, how much his manager has to do with his art.

  115. Comment by Jimbro on April 29, 2021 1:15 pm

Aimee Mann, both talented & attractive.

Did not know Mann sang vocals with Geddy Lee on the single “Time Stand Still” by Rush.

She’s put out a shit ton of music, in bands, solo and collaborations. I’m pretty sure she’s a lefty but you don’t see her tossing Molotov cocktails so there’s that.

  116. Comment by Car in on April 29, 2021 1:15 pm

Sticking to specifics, Josh Homme has a band. He’s not a single artist who releases “JOSH HOMME” albums. He has constantly surrounds himself with other musicians he can collaborate with. He writes the songs with the band and the entire band is credited. Other artists flock to him, and he’s actually helped many of them by producing their albums for them. He doesn’t try to say it’s the JOSH HOMME SHOW, and he constantly gives credit to those around him.

This is all about how an artist presents himself. If he/she says they are in a band – and the band produces/creates everything, than a single person isn’t being propped up. It’s a collaboration. And because it’s a collaboration of really talented people, often what they come up with is really good.

Beyonce is propped up by hoardes and hoardes of writers, producers, and marketing suits etc etc. If she were left in a room and with the task of writing an album all by her lonesome, it most likely would really suck. But when Beyonce accepts her award for being the best singer ever out there, its awarded to her – not to her entire … team of probably 30+ others who do most of the work.

  117. Comment by Jay in Ames on April 29, 2021 1:22 pm

There’s an article linked at Insty on a shortage of tanker truck drivers leading to gas shortages this summer. It reminds me of a conversation I had with my brother a month or so back. Therre is 1 truck available for every 27 loads of refrigerated or frozen food that needs to be trucked from the west coast to the rest of America. This includes all of the produce in Cali and Oregon and even Idaho potato products. His company is telling their salesman to start putting the word out to customers that there will be at least 10% inflation in grocery prices in 2021. I asked him why the shortage and he says all the smaller firms went under. Something like 3500 refer units are currently in bankruptcy proceedings. Get ready, cause here it comes.

    https://spectator.us/topic/right-fell-love-with-markets/

At a meeting in 1970, one of its founding members, the Fortune magazine journalist and avowed free-marketer John Davenport, warned the assembled audience that if market liberals didn’t move beyond their economic comfort zones, they would struggle to persuade those whose support they required if they wanted free-market convictions translated into policy. Market liberals must, Davenport insisted, ‘make room for what some of our conservative friends have long been urging — namely that the end of man is not just the pursuit of pleasure but of something quite different — the pursuit of excellence, the pursuit, let us say it, of virtue.’

Two years later, Irving Kristol expressed a similar view at another Mont Pelerin meeting. No longer on the political left, Kristol was fully convinced that markets were superior to planning. But, he told the conference attendees, too many advocates of markets relied implicitly or explicitly on a libertarian social philosophy that, Kristol claimed, had ‘too limited an imagination when it came to vice’. This outlook, Kristol added, ‘never really could believe that vice, when unconstrained by religion, morality, and law, might lead to viciousness’.
