I’ve thought that a neat alt-history would be what would happen if the German advance through the Ardennes had failed. The French figure out what is happening, or weather causes the Germans to bog down, and the result is a stalemate on Belgian soil along a narrow front. The failure of the operation weakens Hitler’s regime, and after a year of bloody stalemate he’s removed by the General Staff.
France’s generals were still fighting the last war. They built the Maginot Line and a series of forts with artillery to control an invasion as if it was still trench warfare time. The Germans simply overwhelmed them with rapid movement before the French could react properly.

The Maginot line gets an underserved bad rep. The French Generals based their strategy on the realities of Europe at the time, namely their weakness in organization and industrialization and numbers, as well as the lingering psychological damage to the French from the First World War (there are still areas of France that are no-go zones because of poisons and undetonated ordinance).
The German attack through Belgium wasn’t some shocking maneuver, it was what was expected. The purpose of the Maginot line was to prevent a German attack elsewhere that could draw away French defenders, allowing France to concentrate their forces in Belgium where the German advantage in numbers and organization would be neutralized due to the terrain and the involvement of the British. Unfortunately, treaty obligations meant that the Maginot line couldn’t be fully constructed in certain areas, and the French misjudged the ability of the Ardennes to prevent a German bypass of prepared defensive positions.

The French should never have levied such harsh terms at Versailles. Germany recovered far faster than France did from WWI; the treaty seems to show the French knew this was likely and just wanted Germany hobbled as long as possible. This is the claim they are going with. It’s absurd on its face. The symptoms of any respiratory infection (that passes by droplet) are how they spread. Shedding viral particles when you aren’t sneezing or coughing is basically a non-issue, which is where the non-symptomatic/pre-symptomatic argument was always patent nonsense. If the primary mode of transfer is fecal-oral (like most flus and coronaviral illnesses) then washing hands was always enough and we couldn’t justify all this hygiene theater to steal the election.

My experience with NG folks is that they were no different than active duty. Different bullshit than the AD folks, some good leaders, some bad, etc. A different culture since it wasn’t their full-time jobs.
My bet is that the National Guard would say “fuck it” and go home. It’s one thing to pull guard duty outside of Congress and try to pick up a Congressional Aide on Tinder, it’s another to conduct combat patrols in communities you grew up in. Plus, there simply aren’t enough bodies to cover the US.

If hes quiet and low key he may be able to work out something with his company commander (drill instructor) or he may have to get SEAL creative. Remember that “never quit” stuff? If he has to he can do calisthenics in the laundry room. I would also like to acknowledge he has performed quite the achievement already. Those slots are highly desired and he went to front of list. That speaks for itself. His PT scores were great (but tell him I knew a guy that would put his loaded ruck on and do pull-ups, many, many.) He obviously passed the psychological portion. He qualed asvab wise. Slept in till 7 which may be a record for me in the past 20 years. Ben wakes Paula up to let her know he’s home at night (her request) and since he’s no longer working late nights at CFA it’s been a while since that’s happened. He and a friend went out last night and at 11 PM came in to let her know. All 3 dogs lost their minds with barking and it took everyone a while to calm the fuck down and fall back asleep.
I was awakened around 3:45 by Moose lying on my legs.
Seriously. The dog weighs 175. I don’t know what he thinks. Later Stella did the same thing. I don’t know why they do that. I’ve never had a dog that wanted to LAY on my legs while I was sleeping. Its a big bed – there is room elsewhere.

Add into that program random wake ups at odd times when he’d normally be sleeping. Doing simple tasks can be daunting without adequate sleep.
As an ROTC cadet I had the option of going to Ranger School instead of the Advanced Camp between junior/senior years. The biggest thing that held me back was the need to function while exhausted from no sleep. That, combined with my knowledge that if I failed I’d be back at Advanced Camp following college graduation and knowing I wasn’t heading to a Combat Arms branch made it an easy decision at the time.
Ollie is sleeping on our bed currently. Right now it’s easy to move a 15 pound puppy when you shift positions. Rowan weights about 55 pounds and every now and then he’ll lay on the bed in the middle of the night and it’s a struggle to move.
Good advice. I wish he’d run the Ragnar with me last year. NOT at all the same but a nice taste of discomfort, tired, you have to just keep running.

Speaking of books – anyone read any Jack Carr. Sampled a book last night that looked good.
The local school district has met or is soon meeting to discuss returning to full time school for the 4th semester this year. Ben is heartbroken at the thought of going back full time. I don’t blame him, aside from the mask bullshit he’s had the best year a 16-17 year old kid could have. School 2 days a week, flight training 1 to 2 days a week, hanging out with friends after getting take out coffee whenever they feel like it.
It’s going to be hard to put that horse back in the barn or, alternative phrase, genie back into the bottle.
Paula said she hopes they do vote for full time school. Eh, for Ben I think if they offer the same model I might put a plug in for him to stay with the same program. He’s pretty responsible and can handle it. He’ll be a senior next year and I’m pretty sure they have more freedom to come and go from the school during the week.
At 16-17, if homeschooling is an option for the remainder, I say go for it.
I’m trying to figure out how to help Possum make friends without having to put her in a state or parochial school at this point.

Yeah, he’s a September birthday so when he hit first grade here in town his teacher suggested he repeat first grade. It was a good move because he is definitely more mature than his peers. Part of that is just his nature, he inherited a lot of Paula’s drive, not so much her athleticism.
I think he might do fine with a home schooled senior year. Might need to pay a tutor for the math classes if those are needed to pass.
