HHD

Welcome to another edition of Hunky Hump Day.
My current favorite song, from a zombie musical. (Language warning)

Now for the hunks. Mr. RFH and I have been binge-watching “Red Dwarf” and soon discovered that they attempted an American version in 1992, with today’s Easter egg as Holly and this guy as Lister. (It went nowhere.)

Other HHD fodder today.

Last, but not least.

Thanks to Pirate’s Cove for the linky love every week, and y’all have a good day. A blessed Ash Wednesday and a good start to Lent for those observing.

Remember when I said Dan Crenshaw (rep from Texas) was shaky and couldn’t be trusted? Look at Ace’s side bar. He’s an attention whore douche. No comma on purpose.

The Easter egg looks like the actor on Fraser. Forget her name but she had a British accent, don’t know if it was real or fake

  7. Comment by Jimbro on February 17, 2021 7:25 am

Yeah, I thought Crenshaw was one of the good guys but he’s bought in to the GOPe platform and can’t be trusted to do anything but give the occasional “tough guy” sound bite as cover while he fucks people over behind the scenes

Jane Leeves. Not sure if it’s her or not but she has an uncanny resemblance if it’s not. Born in ‘61 and got her start as one of Hill’s Angels on The Benny Hill Show. That show could never be produced now lol

  42. Comment by Car in on February 17, 2021 10:38 am

When I saw Tool in Chicago, Justin was on the side stage watching them.

  43. Comment by Sobek on February 17, 2021 10:39 am

I don’t know why but I’ve never liked the Telecaster body style, and especially the head. It just looks … not enough, I guess.

  44. Comment by Car in on February 17, 2021 10:41 am

I understand they’re not the usual type of stuff you see at The Ark. But probably fewer women in comfortable shoes at the show.

  45. Comment by Sobek on February 17, 2021 10:41 am

The body is too chunky and the head is too thin. I think that’s it. The proportions are out of whack. I know a lot of people swear by the sound, but I don’t care for the look. That’s shallow, I know, but that’s how it is.

  46. Comment by Sobek on February 17, 2021 10:42 am

My second oldest heard the French national anthem for the first time yesterday and was surprised at how violent it is. 59. Comment by leoncaruthers on February 17, 2021 11:28 am

They went in heavy on wind because of subsidies and signalling by all the power companies, then had a once-in-a-century cold snap after they’d allowed their grid to become heavily (25%) dependent on the giant fans.

The lesson should be obvious, that even in a hot state like Texas, windmills cannot be relied upon for electricity. This lesson will not be learned. Expect more wind farms to be built to “increase reliability”.

  60. Comment by Hotspur on February 17, 2021 11:31 am

When we get ice storms (freezing rain) we get loads of power outages. Especially if the storm is accompanied by any wind – then it is a fucking nightmare. Trees get coated with ice, can’t stand the weight, and go down everywhere, lines cut, crews can’t get in to repair the damage – it’s a fucking catastrophe. Happens about every three to five years.

  61. Comment by Car in on February 17, 2021 11:37 am

Danny Carey. Neil Peart. But yea, Mario Duplantier. Of course, you can’t say someone is a great drummer w/o people throwing out the “OH YEA – BUT THESE GUYS WERE “””THE””””” GREATS”. As if saying someone is good at X, you’re insulting everyone else who ever did X in the course of human existence.

Saying Gojira’s drummer is really good actually has no bearing on other dummers being good. And it actually isn’t trying to list anyone as the GREATEST or ranking them at all.

  62. Comment by Car in on February 17, 2021 11:38 am

ed their grid to become heavily (25%) dependent on the giant fans.

  65. Comment by Pendejo on February 17, 2021 11:49 am

Future windmills are in the pipeline and probably couldn’t be stopped even with a Republican controlled house, senate and executive. The blades are at least 70’ long and are transported one at a time by oversized trucks with a parade of pilot vehicles ahead and behind. They can fuck up a busy intersection for long periods of time while trying to make a corner. There are organizations in the hill country and probably elsewhere ginning up political opposition to further encroachment for various reasons. Aesthetics being one and the fact that they’re all being installed by huge out of state energy conglomerates that don’t even try to be fair when it comes to figuring property taxation and royalties to the land owners.

    ——–
I missed the last big ice storm around here in 1998. It was yuge, power out for days, weeks for some people. The lady I bought this house from said it was off for 10 days around here. I was up in the White Mountains of NH that summer and the areas where trees were felled by the ice were still obvious. 20+ years on I’m sure they’ve recovered.

Our power companies come by with a bucket truck and chainsaw crew every year or two and clear the lines by the driveway. A few people learned their lessons.

  67. Comment by Jay in Ames on February 17, 2021 12:01 pm

They build the blades at an old Maytag plant, and all of them go to Northern Iowa on the interstate where I go home. All summer long, in sets of 3. There’s probably thousands by now, in Iowa.

  82. Comment by Hotspur on February 17, 2021 12:28 pm

Not only did Rush inspire but he educated.

He gave conservatives the information they needed to stand up to the liberal bullies. He analyzed situations and correctly predicted motives, outcomes, and consequences.

He inspired people to not give up, but to keep fighting.

When I first started listening to him it was around 1993, and he would begin his program with “America in Exile” then state the number of days since Clinton took office, because at that time the democrats controlled it all – White House, Senate, House, and Supreme Court.

Then things brightened up in 1994 when the republicans retook the house.

  83. Comment by Car in on February 17, 2021 12:29 pm

I became conservative around 1992. Right as his show was really getting popular. Coincidence? Probably not.

someone on twitter said she sounded like a robot, no emotion. I said I sounded very similar when I read my father’s obituary at his funeral, and maybe he shouldn’t be a miserable person about it.

My dad gave flags to veteran’s families at their funerals, with an honor guard. I asked him how he did it. He said you only have to hold it together for a little while, and that’s easier than what they are going through. So true, and so wise. That’s how I got through it too.

I need to vent for a second.

What. The flying fuck. Is wrong with Texas?

Of all the states in the union I expected to have a better handle on basic contingency and emergency planning, Texas was at or near top of the list. And then…and then…

    What. The. Fuck?

Is it possible – juuuuuust possible – the Texas hype is as hollow as every other line of bullshit we’ve been fed over the past couple of decades?

    Because, DUDE.

Except for outliers, I think people said about RBG death- rest in peace. Many may not have liked her or her politics (I was one of them) but it was generally, RIP and prayers for the family.

What I’ve seen linked at Ace’s and whatnot generally much of the left is being vile, mean and hateful towards Rush and his family.

  132. Comment by Hotspur on February 17, 2021 4:30 pm

Texas is California except ten years behind. No, make that 5.

  133. Comment by Mare on February 17, 2021 4:31 pm

Brother Tim, what are you referring to?

If you are surprised that a State that rarely gets snow, doesn’t have equipment for it, and even more rarely has below freezing temps for a few days and therefore cannot provide the electricity to heat the WHOLE STATE FOR A WEEK, then yes, I can understand your surprise.

  135. Comment by Hotspur on February 17, 2021 4:53 pm

Brother Tim, what are you referring to?

He may be referring to the idiots in the “Oil & Gas State” investing in a dickaround like wind power.

Maybe he isn’t, but if I were him, that’s what I’d be referring to.

  136. Comment by mare on February 17, 2021 5:02 pm

Hotspur, if that is what he’s referring to, I agree 100%. This is the bullshit that happens when you give into eco dick faces.

Oil and gas underground, enough for all, nope let’s use costly, inefficient, wind turbines.

  137. Comment by Brother Tim on February 17, 2021 5:10 pm

Yeah, that’s mostly it. That and understanding that just because something doesn’t NORMALLY happen that doesn’t mean it NEVER happens and that NOT HAVING A PLAN for when it DOES happen and A QUARTER OF YOUR FUCKING POWER GENERATION GOES OUT THE FUCKING WINDOW is so far beyond unforgivable that THE LIGHT FROM UNFORGIVABLE WON’T REACH AUSTIN FOR ANOTHER THOUSAND FUCKING YEARS.

And I’m supposed to trust Texas as the nucleus of a “sane America”?

  138. Comment by Brother Tim on February 17, 2021 5:14 pm

I’m sure Texas will form a multicultural, multiracial, multisexual?? group to investigate the power outage. Much money will be spent. They will determine their comrades on the public utility regulation board did nothing wrong and rose to meet the emergency no one could have anticipated with bravery and wisdom. And then they’ll pay for more wind turbines…..

  145. Comment by Pioneer46 on February 17, 2021 6:12 pm

Green energy virtue signalling/sweet sweet federal dollars are only part of the problem. in Texas, a lot of the talk has been about the lack of follow through on winterization plans, with ERCOT (Electricity Reliability Council of Texas- ha!) saying that winterization is expensive, and the (voluntary) plans are not always followed through on by the power plants. Its not just the wind that failed- the nuke plant in Baytown had frozen pipes too, and went down.

Tldr: Bureaucrats suck at doing their job.

“New York Replaces Gifted Test for Elementary School With Lottery

-Change for fall 2021 is due to concerns about pandemic, segregation; long-term process to be decided”

WSJ article title from this morning. First two paragraphs:

“New York City’s Department of Education said children will be admitted to elementary school gifted-and-talented programs this year by lottery based on letters of recommendations from preschool teachers, instead of standardized testing.

Under the change, prompted by the interruption of the pandemic and concerns about racial disparities, teacher-recommended preschoolers will be enrolled in the lottery in May.”

Teacher crossfit friend said she hoped the state would cancel all the standardized tests this year, because the kids aren’t prepared for them.

uh … the point of the test isn’t supposed to be preparation. It’s supposed to be a check on their progress.

No one wants to talk about the fact that school teachers suck at homeschooling.
