A nurse I know well has had some recent exciting days on duty.
In one instance she was covering a 50-something rule out MI guy while her colleague was on break and he said he didn’t feel well. The monitor went from NSR to VFib to asystole within seconds. Compressions started, shouts for help went out and the guy lived to make it to the big hospital and go home from there. After the code was completed he sat up and wondered why his chest hurt so much. No ribs were broken.
The other exciting one involved an out of state toddler brought in by parents visiting for the holiday. Toddler was lethargic and had a fever of unknown origin (FUO is a big pediatrics dilemma). The provider did a work up and said to send the kid home. Nurse did not like the plan and got close to mom, stared at her while slowly saying “If there’s no improvement in the next hour, any change for the worse or you just don’t feel comfortable, please come back immediately”. Kid was back in less than an hour and sent to the big hospital where the diagnosis was bacterial meningitis. Death and disaster averted.
One of life’s sublime pleasures is a leftover turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce sandwich. Even better on Syrian bread from a real Arab bakery and not that mass produced shit they sell at the supermarket.

At the moment I’m visiting my brother in Atlanta. Day to day I’m staying with some old friends, so my situation is not dire by any stretch, though I am looking to turn it around in stages.
The guest is a friend of my brother’s wife. Was just for dinner.
The missus threw her back out, so i did all the cooking yesterday, other than some rolls she made the night before. I’d like to think that makes me a hero, but the two pies were from Costco, and the turkey and ham were also from Costco because we don’t have enough meat eaters to justify buying a whole bird. But i made the stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, gravy, and cranberry sauce from scratch. And I did successfully heat up the ham and turkey.
Also, I had all the dishes clean or in the dishwasher before I went to sleep, and this morning I emptied the dishwasher. So maybe I am a hero.
After dinner, I celebrated Indigenous People’s Day by tearing the still-beating heart from a conquered tribesman and throwing his corpse down a stairway. Just like Gaia intended.
