MMM 419: Megaliths that aren’t “Megaliths”

First, we’ve got this thing.

Which is a giant rock, but wasn’t carved by human hands, and doesn’t really look much like a “face” unless you drop the resolution a lot. This is on Mars, if you don’t recognize it.

We’ve talked about the “Pyramid in Antarctica!!!” before. Looks man-made, but it’s solid rock cleaved at normal angles for that kind of rock in a place where it doesn’t get much weathering.

We’ve also talked about glacial erratics before. When you see them apparently balanced precariously like this, it would be tempting to assume that they’d been placed there by human hands. No human was anywhere near these for a thousand miles when they settled like this, though, as the process wasn’t pulleys or levers, but a Biblical-scale flood.

We haven’t talked about these before, the Nazca Lines in Peru (this is the “new” one by the way that was just discovered recently). While crafted by human hands, and near as we can tell of roughly the same age as many European, Middle-Eastern, and north African megaliths, and of similarly grand scale, they are made out of tiny rocks, no bigger than a softball. Any group of able-bodied people could make one with sufficient time and inclination, and with no engineering technique more sophisticated than a bucket or drag sled.

  1. So they have bitter old cat ladies in Peru too?

  2. You say we talked about antarctic pyramids before and glacial erratics but I don’t remember that…D’OH. It’s interesting though and I learned something today.

It wasn’t even that long ago, on the scale of MMM. On the scale of most of the things in it, they basically happened simultaneously.

  5. I went to bed early but my sleep was interrupted by gut issues, combine that with late sunrise and severe overcast and I overslept a lot.

  6. fritz the cat

  7. my sleep was interrupted by work, thinking about something in a dream, then WHAMMO something horrible happens and of course I have to wake up, and can’t get back to sleep.

  8. It’s overcast here. Too early for the winter jacket but it’s going to rain this afternoon. Rain jacket will keep me dry but I’ll freeze and lightweight fleece will keep me warm but soggy.

    dry/cold vs warm/soggy

Fuckin’ A, time for my winter jacket dammit!

  9. The thing about Nazca isn’t how the stones were moved, but how they knew the right patterns. Many strange and interesting ideas about how that was done, ranging from towers on nearby hills (not too crazy) to hot air balloons (eh…) to that evergreen idea, ancient astronauts. Doesn’t help nobody’s even sure why they were made to begin with.

As for antarctic pyramids, everybody knows that’s just the shoggoths playing around.

  13. My office nurse partner is up in NY (near Niagara Falls) to be with her brother and his wife who just lost their baby. She was 4 or 5 months old and had cardiac issues associated with Down Syndrome. She hadn’t seen her yet because of the Covid and in the last week or so things were going downhill for the baby. Her NICU doctors had done everything they could for her and she was in congestive heart failure. She died before she got there but she was able to console them just by her presence. The veil between this world and the next is a thin one. Hug your kids and let them know you love them as often as possible.

  14. So, does this help or hurt Collins in her Maine senate race? I would imagine help, because no one is stupid enough to torpedo their campaign over a perfectly qualified Supreme Court justice vs their feelings, are they?

    https://ijr.org/susan-collins-to-vote-against-barrett-confirmation/

  15. When you say we’ve talked about these before the assumption is that we read these.

  16. Collins is on thin ice regardless of that particular vote. If she wants to do the right thing, abstaining from voting would be better. They (liberal groups and fake conservatives) have targeted Collins for months with negative ads. The Second District of Maine is conservative except for the cities so just like the rest of America. The race is a toss up despite her being out raised 5:1 and I think Collins is just trying to avoid the campaign ads of her being a hypocrite for the last week before the election. They’re running ones tying her to Trump and Mitch McConnell already

  17. That cat thing looks like that way old internet meme of the cat shooting across the sky.

  49. I had dinner yesterday, country pork rib, veggies, and salad, weigh in, lost 2 pounds this week.

I had a wrap last night, nothing else. I weigh in today, gained a pound 18 hours later. This is bullshit.

  52. Usually I weigh in on Thursday. Last week I was over from the weekend before, by 2 pounds. Yesterday I was down 5 pounds from that.

It’s nice having looser clothes, at least. Got to stop tracking weight, it gets frustrating. I show a steady progress, so I’m ok with it, but it takes the will away when weight fluctuates so much.

  53. what did miss lindsay do now? besides a thai ladyboy, of course.

  56. Can I buy an inexpensive Dutch oven ( lid handle can go in the oven) or will I regret not getting something with whatever people pay a lot for Dutch ovens has?

Sam’s Club has one for $49.

Doubtful, he’s too gay for that.

  58. They probably finally found the Monolith.

  59. Screaming headline in Michigan something to the effect that we had 35 deaths in one day, which hasn’t happened since bla bla bla months ago.

Read the story? 28 of those deaths did not, in fact, happen yesterday (or saturday, which ever the day was) but came from an audit. They could have been last week, last months, or months ago.

  60. that’s the one I have, Mare. Works great!

  61. I have a plain one (for deep frying) and an enameled one (dutch ovens, and not the fun kind).

  62. First woman on moon should be 2024. (I would not bet money on that, but that’s me being a curmudgeon.)

The plan is 2024, but it will take twice as long for her to get ready as she says it will. So 2025 at the earliest.

  66. Something fun I learned recently and really should have known all along is that oxygen isn’t hard to get anywhere that has a rocky surface. “Rocks” are all oxide-rich. The harder stuff to find for life is either C, N, H, or P depending on which rocky planet you’re talking about.

  67. Remember me posting about Trump’s executive order making some civil servants at-will employees? The howls have been particularly delicious this morning. Two are threatening to retire…okay? Works for me.

  68. I really do think Trump’s second term is going to be a lot more based. He isn’t going to face reelection, the party will be united behind him, and everyone is looking for vengeance.

  69. Thanks, Jay. I’m getting it.

  70. I have an enameled cast iron dutch oven, and it’s okay, but I don’t use it as much as I would if I had gotten the cast aluminum one.

It’s just a pain in the ass to lug in and out of the oven fully loaded, and it’s so heavy I’m always afraid it’s going to break my glass refrigerator shelves. I guess I’d get a smaller cast iron one, because I usually don’t fill the big honkin’ thing, or one the same size but in cast aluminum which is much lighter.

As it is, when I made beef stew yesterday I cooked the beef and broth in the oven in a little 3-quart SS stockpot with a glass lid rated for oven use up to 350 degrees or so.

  71. aluminum loses heat too easily and has hot spots, I don’t care for it. I would go for a smaller dutch oven first, before going with aluminum.

But your solution with the regular pan in the oven is a good one. Pans handle heat better than you think.

  90. I think most people in the Middle East are like us, just fed up with their leaders. They don’t give a crap if Israel is selling wine, they’ll buy it!

  91. Can I buy an inexpensive Dutch oven

I can get you one for free.

  92. Haha, just pay postage on the dutch oven, which will be more than buying a brand new one.

  93. First woman on moon should be 2024.

Why? Because they need to fuck that up too? Haven’t they done enough since we gave them the vote?

  94. I think Hotspur’s offer of a Dutch oven was a little more odiferous

  96. As much as I’m trying to remain thankful regarding the shape of my current situation, I have one…I would say “small” but maybe not, problem.

I largely avoid talking politics there but damn, it’s MSNBC so damn much there…I keep to my self and keep my head down. But in a week and change, well. And I’m not ready to relocate yet (I probably would be if the truck hadn’t gone tits up).

  115. Alright, all ‘ettes are now required to don your handmaid outfits.

  116. Glad they actually confirmed ACB. Here’s hoping she won’t get squishy like so many seem to.

Big winds here the last few days. They finally quit and the temp plummeted. 2″ of sleet on the ground. It looks like a bean bag chair blew up. 21 degrees , no fun at all.

  117. she doesn’t seem the type to go Roberts on us.

  118. That could change when the Clinton Foundation offers her $20 million.

  119. I still believe that Roberts’ main goal is to try to keep the court out of political controversies as much as possible. ACB will give the right more strength, but I also expect her to push back against unconstitutional moves by the right as well. The main benefit is that without an activist left on the court, a lot of issues will stay in the legislative lane, where we can force debates on them.

  120. so, the only way to prevent political controversies is to side with the left?

I agree that Barrett isn’t a conservative rubber stamp, but Roberts keeping the court non-political by the arguments he is making? I disagree. He kept a political football by declaring the mandate a tax. When it clearly isn’t.

  121. Voting down Obamacare would have been a Roe-level decision. Roberts’ ruling figured out how to reduce the question to a technical one and sidestep the larger questions, pushing them back over to the legislature.

The problem is that the GOP wants an activist court just as much as the left, because they don’t want to have to risk anything, spend any political capital in order to push conservative policies.

  122. ok, so what has a GOP led court passed, that hasn’t gotten past the legislature. I can’t think of anything. ACA is the main one I can think of from a legislative context, and gay marriage from the completely judicial side.

  123. I feel Roberts was wrong. You have to pass things that obey the rules. Roberts made up a rule.

  124. Curious as to why Clarence Thomas is swearing in ACB and not John Roberts.

  125. Trump wanted a conservative to do it.

  126. My former landlady passed away last week. I didn’t keep up with her after I moved out, it was not that kind of relationship. She decided she wanted to go to the Holy Land, so she doubled our rent from $175 a month to $350, at a time when you could get a one-bedroom apartment in a only slightly skeezy neighborhood for $300 a month. We all moved out, so her income went to zero.

She’s the one who gave me Jack Chick tracts, trying to convince me not to join the Whore of Babylon Catholic Church.

She was 81 and lived to see her grandchildren, that’s a lot more than some get. RIP.

  127. And yeah, I stared at $175 and $350 for a bit, to make sure I had my math right. It’s been that kind of day.

  128. Heh, another James points out Thomas is the judge Biden failed to destroy.

  129. Heh. My last landlord was on Schindler’s List. As was his wife. He liked me. Always gave us a break. We would talk. We would haggle about rent. Then, the movie came out. No one would bargain with him. His apartments became “Immigrant”

    ——–

    Nope.

  132. Everything is a political controversy that’s how it gets to the SC. It’s the court’s job to make a decision based on the Constitution. Or, actually, not make a decision because it’s out of their preview. He made a decision.

  133. Purview stupid autocorrect.

    Yeah, that sounds right.

  137. Per Jay’s request.
