MMM – MJ Edition

Leon is probably taking care of very important business and has a great excuse for shirking his Monday responsibility. I’ll fill in with a very intriguing post.

This rock formation has a perfectly formed white ball in the middle. Probably an alien culture.
This formation found on indigenous land comes in 2 sizes and is ‘new’ which I can only assume means it’s been around for thousands of years.
Perfectly formed structures. Either this mountainous ancient culture used these for animal sacrifice or as an important part of their astronomical observations which are still far superior to ours. Cuz noble savages.
These are rocks that are bluish kinda. Very intriguing.

My neighbors were telling everyone that we need to shut down the country – entire country – for 4 weeks to get on top of things.

4 week shut down. Complete. No going anywhere except groceries and medicine.

2 x PhDs. Daughter is in med school.

GND rarely says anything but she was totally blown away. She asked, ‘didn’t we already do that?’ to which they replied we opened too early. Need to shut down again.

Found the CNN/MSNBC viewers. My aunt was the same at 4th of July. I kept my own counsel for the duration out of respect for my parents and grandmother. Kept quiet and cut brussels sprouts while my dad’s sister was telling his other sister that people like me were essentially all engaged in indiscriminate manslaughter. I’m basically a saint.

Most and I mean most of the sexual assault charges in the Military are bogus. Most start out consensual and then turn.

As with race, men in the military are comfortable with women being pilots, excellent with a weapon, good planners, leaders, etc..

The trash group of ANY organization does idiotic shit like having an affair with a “co-worker” and act in a sordid fashion.

There was an episode of 60 minutes that was about sexual misconduct against women in the military. Can’t remember if it was just the academies or not. Anyhoo every one of those women were lying their asses off. I know for a fact one of them because we knew her roommate very well. She was a slut. And through the grapevine knew another of the girls was also a female spurned and had slept around… voluntarily.

Congress wanted to spend the money elsewhere. Once we had beaten the Russians to the Moon they didn’t see any reason to continue. No one gives a shit about scientific research when that money could be spent on a new social program on a military boondoggle built in their district.

Sexual harassment and rapes do occur. I’ve dealt with both in my units at various times. A lot of the problem is when the unit gets an “anything goes” attitude, with everyone sleeping with each other and such, because it either makes it easier for misunderstandings and for lines to be crossed, or because it makes it easier for predators to hide out. Same reason why so many “sex-positive” feminist women seem to end up dealing with creepers, perverts, and predators disguised as “feminist” men: the latter go where the targets are and where they think they’ll be able to hide. Not every woman wants to raise it up to the level of a formal complaint (with the associated potential to destroy someone’s career or unit cohesion), they just want some behavior to stop.

It’s possible that he was a creeper and a psychopath, since the two aren’t mutually exclusive. And the military often attracts… off individuals who benefit from an environment where life is more strictly regulated. It tends to hide the crazy. See Russell Williams of the RCAF for an extreme example.

I have to roll my eyes when I see comments lately about “real science” and bitching about modeling. The entire modern physics paradigm is based around trying to keep patching a flawed model (Einstein’s General Relativity) when its predictions turned out to be wrong, and another model (quantum mechanics) whose predictions can’t be disproven.

  32. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 6, 2020 9:39 am

But modern physics and cosmology produces lots of jobs in air-conditioned offices and labs with big lasers ‘n’ shit.

So, really, it’s for the best.

  33. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 9:40 am

There’s also a weird association with data modeling and science.

A model is not science. It’s a model.

I guess you could make the argument that the model is predictive and can therefore either proved or disproved but that never seems to happen. The models are treated as oracles.

    Dunno. I don’t get it.

  34. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 9:40 am

    Well, big lasers are important.

  35. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 9:43 am

A model isn’t science, but science is about modeling. The scientific method is to observe a phenomena, create a generalized model to predict future behavior, and then to test that model’s predictions against observations of the real world.

  36. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 9:45 am

Yep, I get that. But pop culture has decided that models are science for some reason.

I think it’s because people are stupid which is my working philosophy for erruything.

    ——–
    Yes.

  38. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 6, 2020 9:49 am

Right. Where data science really shines is in things like curve-fitting. If you don’t have a prediction to test but you get enough data, you can sort of “intuit” the model mechanically by casting the data against various curves that would represent plausible relationships between inputs and outputs and measuring the discrepancy. This can give you a model to test against in future experiments to judge veracity of the perceived relationships.

But if quasars say your model is bullshit, you gotta start over at the top, not tweak the model.

  39. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 9:52 am

I’d lay some of the blame on the scientific community which drank it’s own kool-aid regarding it’s ability to “understand” the universe. They’ve been the ones often pushing to gullible journalists how this or that model “proves” some pet theory.

Add in cheap computing power and the “publish or perish” mentality, and all of a sudden it’s easier to run poorly coded computer simulations and treat it as gospel.

  40. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 9:54 am

But if quasars say your model is bullshit, you gotta start over at the top, not tweak the model.
    ——————-
They always change the model and call it more science. No one ever tests the model.

I’d like to test models for a living. This one is too short! This one is too tall! This one doesn’t know how to properly handle a gentlemen’s sausage!

  41. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 9:56 am

Econ gets a lot of shit, and some of it deserved, but one thing my grad professors railed against was data mining. You’d better have a sound theory to back up why you were including a certain variable in your equations. Data mining can be useful for identifying possible relationships to explore, but only if you’re careful. Otherwise you just in up a correlation whore.

  42. Comment by mare on July 6, 2020 9:56 am

  43. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 9:59 am

They always change the model and call it more science. No one ever tests the model.

If you’re changing the model based on observations that is testing the model. You’re testing it against real-world observations. The problem is that too often people want to tweak a model around the edges, not accept that there may be a fundamental discrepancy that they haven’t identified. That’s how you end up with “96% of the universe is dark matter” or layers of epicycles: you don’t want to admit that you screwed up somewhere way up the line.

  44. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 10:01 am

What I mean is that no one tests the model’s predictive power v random chance.

As in my model to determine the size and shape of Walt’s asshole is not statistically different than a guess.

They just update and say we’re working on it instead of saying yesterday we were totally confident and today, yesterday’s model was as good as throwing a dart. A little humility would be nice.

  45. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 10:08 am

  47. Comment by Brother Tim on July 6, 2020 10:11 am

The biggest problem with models is that you don’t actually know all the, for lack of better or proper terminology variables, in play in any large process, be it physical or economical or social. If you miss something critical, your results are likely to be garbage. And of course if you include things that aren’t actually significant, that makes things even worse. None of which would happen nearly as much if the goal was actually “figure out what’s happening with x” and not “figure out how to derive funding and influence using y as a predicate”.

  48. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 10:13 am

Sure, in Econ or finance. I was thinking more of public policy model influencers, like climate change.

Add in cheap computing power and the “publish or perish” mentality, and all of a sudden it’s easier to run poorly coded computer simulations and treat it as gospel.

This is huge. Need a thesis and don’t have your own data? Make a model!

I remember reading a wonderful takedown of the red-shift model in light of what we’ve observed since Einstein, written by a creationist (old earth type) who was actually a little sad that what he’d come to believe based on his analysis, because it meant that the evidence that originally led to the Big Bang theory didn’t really prove what they thought it did at the time. The Big Bang was named by its earliest critic, who called it that in derision when a Jesuit first proposed it. He thought it was a subversive religious-based “theory” that was just trying to case Genesis in scientific terms.

Now you can’t say “maybe there was no Big Bang” without being labeled a heretic. There’s some deeeeeeeeeep irony in that.

  55. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 10:25 am

No, the ruling makes sense. State laws can remove faithless electors because ultimately states have wide latitude in deciding how those electors are picked and how their votes are assigned. It would be entirely constitutional for a state legislature to simply vote to give one candidate the state’s electoral votes, without a general election.

The way I read it, in this case the Supreme Court is saying that they’re not going to get involved in how states deal with what is constitutionally an internal matter.

To be clear, I’m not doubting what she saw, or her experience at all. It’s just I’ve never heard of it and the media loves nothing more than enjoying others suffering for political purposes.

I know some people have gotten really sick, but that number is very small. I mean, some people have the flu really kick them in the nads, while others just get the icks for a few days.

Point being – It can be BOTH true that a very small # of people are going to feel like death warmed over AND that it’s nothing for the very vast majority of people.

I had the flu once so bad – I lay on the couch for days and felt like I was dying. pat still talks about it- how bad I was. We kinda forget how bad REALLY BAD flu can be. I’ve only gotten that it bad once in my life. I honestly couldn’t even sit up, that was tiring.

Kayleigh just pulled the pin on a grenade, rolled it towards the reporters, and walked out.

Ended her press conference noting she received 0 questions about shootings and killings in cities skyrocketing, and a quote from the 8 y/o girl’s grandfather that was killed at the ATL Wendys where all the Rayshard Brooks violence started.

  93. Comment by lauraw on July 6, 2020 2:00 pm

I understand your point. I just can’t subscribe to this new political idea I’m seeing, that the whole epidemic was faked. It wasn’t faked. The epidemic model was wrong by orders of magnitude, the lockdown response was idiotic and political, but there really was an illness and a (much smaller than advertised) epidemic.

  94. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 6, 2020 2:06 pm

The “faked” part is almost certainly everything that China told us about it. HCQ-Z didn’t work, ibuprofen will kill you if you have it and take some, worse for smokers, worse for younger men, etc.

  95. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 6, 2020 2:08 pm

    Then there’s the don’t-let-the-crisis-go-to-waste response from Cuomo/Whitmer/Newsome.

  96. Comment by mare on July 6, 2020 2:11 pm

I’ve always thought the lockdown (quarantine) was a scam. Not the manufactured (as in China) virus. I still will never believe that we should shut down our economy for an epidemic that ravaged the usual unfortunate individuals.

Two weeks to “flatten the curve” well, maybe, maybe not. But based on politicians and “scientists” behavior. and speech it obviously wasn’t as serious as advertised.

You simply cannot say, “protests are fine, but congregating at the beach and funerals is dangerous” with a straight face. Besides lefty psychos, who thinks that makes sense?

  97. Comment by Pendejo on July 6, 2020 2:16 pm

My older daughter is an OT and was telling us about some of the patients she’s helped with. Several instances of very fit people in their 30s and 40s who were still having to use a walker several weeks after being released from hospital due to muscular degeneration.

  98. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on July 6, 2020 2:22 pm

I supported the initial lockdown because we didn’t know what the hell we were dealing with. This thing isn’t the flu, and it’s behavior is weird. So, make sure that hospitals aren’t overwhelmed, give people and organizations a chance to adjust and prepare, and start opening back up in a methodical way.

  99. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 2:32 pm

I’ve noticed something weird, Lauraw. I think it’s a symptom of where we are as a country, but when people push back just slightly on the veracity of the claims being made about covid it gets interpreted as disbelief in it.

Not saying that’s happening here, but I’ve noticed it at work a lot. Prolly cuz the people that work in rev cycle seem to think it gives them clinical experience or something. They’re in billing but think of themselves as doctors. Also weird.

  100. Comment by mare on July 6, 2020 2:33 pm

Very strange, PG. Until very recently the numbers (not my numbers, numbers from the CDC) were skewing much older. 30-40’s are outliers and/or “very fit people” was a description coming from patients who said they were, but weren’t. Which happens all the time.

Doctor: How much do you drink?
Patient: A couple of drinks a week.

Same with exercise, food choices and drug use. Most don’t know they are diabetic or prediabetic.

  101. Comment by Car in on July 6, 2020 2:38 pm

I didn’t think it was fake, and I’m pretty sure I don’t know anyone who does. But they lied, guessed, and took the most extreme (uninformed) response to 11. They used it for political purposes. People have become divided politically over how they feel about it it (although there is a lot of crossover – especially at first until some realized what side they were “supposed” to be on). Every day people were blaming Trump for Covid, or etc (they still are). If something walks like a fake duck, it’s hard not to call it a fake duck.

  102. Comment by Car in on July 6, 2020 2:39 pm

I think the thing that has made me most cynical is the fact that they built up extra hospital space, and then took it DOWN before they reopened society.

WTF for? I mean, just stupid. Which makes me think they never thought we’d need that extra space.

Or people were just really, really stupid.

  103. Comment by mare on July 6, 2020 2:39 pm

still having to use a walker several weeks after being released from hospital due to muscular degeneration.

    —-

I may have missed that, so they had atrophied from laying in a hospital bed. Yikes.

  104. Comment by leoncaruthers on July 6, 2020 2:40 pm

I think a big part of the pushback is the simple lawlessness of it. We don’t even get a hearing on the legality of Whitmer’s “it’s an emergency until I say it isn’t!” order — over the vocal opposition of the legislature that she had to ask for an extension per the law as I read it — until fucking September.

If they had asked, I might feel differently. They didn’t, they ordered, well beyond their authority.

  105. Comment by mare on July 6, 2020 2:43 pm

I think it was Steve Green on a Bill Whittle video that said: Texas hospitals are at 97% capacity and everyone flipped out but they generally operate at 95% capacity otherwise they wouldn’t be able to stay open. Plenty of beds, plenty of everything needed to take care of serious COVID patients.

The Texas hospital systems are excellent.

  106. Comment by MJ on July 6, 2020 2:56 pm

I got that same vibe Mare.

11eventy!! Texas ICU is at 85%!!!1

    What is it normally?

    85%.

    Oh.

I get that everyone was a bit scared at first, but at this point if you’re still afraid you want to be afraid. I’m not saying go out there and start kissing every boy you see like Hotspur, but go about your business.

So, some idiot T-boned Sarah coming out of the grocery store parking lot this morning (he went into the turn lane to get past an 18-wheeler that was turning into the lot).

Sarah is banged up, but thankfully OK – Paul went and picked her up at the accident site; ambulance checked her out before releasing her.

The asshole (Hispanic) kid who caused the accident doesn’t have insurance. The truck is probably a total loss – he hit her going about 30 mph – and we only have liability (and uninsured motorist) on it, due to its age.

The cop on the scene didn’t even write a ticket for the other driver – said they don’t do that any more.

Remind me again why we “have” to have insurance?
