MMM 407: Throwback

Remember the young, innocent world before pandemic panic?  Back when you could go to restaurants or the gym or get your hair cut without looking like you were going to rob the place or do an emergency tracheotomy?

MMM remembers.   Here’s hoping a tiny bit of meme magic can help bring that back.

I really miss my Ann Arbor dentist. She was 5’2″ and could have been an MMM throwback model any day. Ditto for the hygenist.

Which reminds me, I need to change dentists. Current one is always trying to upsell me or get me to share things about them on social media and I haven’t actually seen the dentist himself in over a year.

Here’s my MSM headline for mask wearing at the grocery store:

MASK USAGE FALLS BY 510%; SOME SAY DEATH FOR ALL

Yesterday morning at Publix, local resident MJ noticed that mask wearing had fallen from 90% to about 70%. No one seemed to care. Everyone went about their business without any trouble.

The kids bagging groceries and collecting carts didn’t wear masks as much as the older employees which is sort of interesting.

Oh, and raspberries were BOGO which is nice cuz MJr eats a lot of those, he said.

One last thing. MJ noticed a couple – guy wasn’t wearing a mask but the woman was inside the store. They checked out at the same time, walked to their cars and it was only then that he noticed she was about 7/8 months pregnant. As he drove away he thought how excited they must be bringing home a baby, which was obviously their first.

Oh, shit, MJ’s talking in 3rd person.

  17. Comment by leoncaruthers on June 8, 2020 8:35 am

The county my grocery store is in is still under a mask order from their dipshit health dept because South Bend is in the same county. I think they have <100 cases in a county that includes South Bend and Notre Dame, so of course the poor bagger at my grocery store still has to look prepped for surgery.

I am on the edge of another county, I might just shop there until this madness passes and we move on to the next. I'm really hoping for a good Satanic Panic like we had back in the 80's, but I don't think the culture is even capable of worrying about souls anymore.

  18. Comment by Car in on June 8, 2020 8:37 am

I think Lapeer is now much less racist. White people congratulated themselves a LOT over their peaceful protest, so we’ve also got that going for us.

  19. Comment by Car in on June 8, 2020 8:38 am

I need a shirt that says “I’m protesting racism” so people understand why I’m not wearing a mask.

  20. Comment by leoncaruthers on June 8, 2020 8:41 am

The city council passed a resolution doing so, but that’s not the last word on what happens to the Minneapolis PD. “Veto-proof majority” still means a veto can be written, and then they’d have to vote again to break it.

This is the most tone-deaf self-own I’ve seen in a while. Does anyone of good conscience still think the “Back To Baghdad” adventure was worth it?

    Yes.

Removing Saddam freed us from having to try and hold together a coalition to keep Iraq contained, demonstrated that the US was willing to strike at countries we perceived to be a threat (and led directly to Libya disarming), drew Iran into a costly proxy war which drained their resources and contributed to nearly toppling the regime in ’09 (and would have likely succeeded if Obama hadn’t fucked over the protesters), and reversed the military degradation of the 90s as well as gave a generation of military leaders valuable combat experience. Despite the ongoing civil problems, Iraq is stabilized and no longer a regional threat.

No but they have to do it now, don’t they? I really doubt someone would say, you know, maybe we should reconsider. Better to let the city be destroyed than question assumptions.

I’m actually for this experiment, btw. What if it works? That would be great. The death and destruction that might happen will be regrettable if it goes wrong but you know, omelets and eggs.

Bush was a competent administrator who tried to address a lot of the issues that we’re still dealing with, such as proposing social security reform, warning about the housing bubble, etc., but was too intertwined with the establishment. It limited his ability to see these people as the enemies they are.

Romney really has gone over the deep end. I’m not exactly sure who he’s pandering to or what he hopes to gain but it’s hard to imagine a conservative supporting him for anything.

  51. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on June 8, 2020 9:46 am

Alex, I take your points, but what did we get out of it that we wouldn’t have gotten out of a direct war with Iran or weren’t already getting out of the operations in Afghanistan?

A direct war with Iran would have been a harder sell, both domestically and internationally, and would have been costlier, since they hadn’t been weakened in the same way Iraq was. Plus, our positions in Saudi Arabia and Turkey gave us a means to strike directly at Iraq while attacking Iran would have required either an invasion of southern Iraq, an invasion through Turkey (we saw how well that went in 2003), or a series of amphibious operations. Basically removing Saddam was the easier of the two options, and would likely have been required in order to neutralize threats to any supply lines into Iran anyways.

That said, I’m open to the argument that Iran would have been the better option, but at that point you’re no longer arguing “military adventures were a mistake!” and instead just debating which military adventure is the better option.

Operations in Afghanistan were, until 2008, fairly limited. We had some troops, SF, and were training the Afghanis, but didn’t have the huge commitment we had later. Arguably that surge in troops and money had a negative effect: we ended up causing more social harm than good.

Big cities with nonexistent policing will export their problems. We already have issues here in Alabama with thugs from one city hitting the Interstate to cause trouble elsewhere. It’s creating a huge safe haven base for the worst elements.

Of course nothing will seriously be done about it because nobody has the fortitude for it. What’s likely to be required now is considered beyond the pale and would have a heavy cost.

Nice MJ. It must be a sight to behold too a short, 275 pound man run that fast!

I did 6 and a half miles on the trails yesterday, and my pace was MUCH slower. I am such a slow trail runner. Oh well. My pace was affected by 1) me not caring about when I start my watch 2) two LOOSE DOGS on the trail – a German Shepherd and brown lab (HOLY HELL did they scare the shit out of me and 3) my playing around with a 4:1 run walk scheme. One of the runners does it at a great pace. If your IT band is bugging, I suggest trying it in a few runs. The theory is that you’re not getting any muscles to tight and/or fatigued … the walk kind of releases everything. It’s a great training tool to get the miles in w/o causing injury.

The geocentric/heliocentric debate in astronomy is interesting. People like to pretend that it geocentrism was about religious nutters who hated science, but basically for several thousand years the geocentrics were the more scientifically sound models. Also, they were as accurate as the heliocentric models.

Galileo was an asshole who burned the friendships he had with fellow astronomers as well as the church, got caught up in church politics, shot his mouth off regarding theology (which is what eventually drew the ire of the inquisition) and then discovered that his mouth was writing checks his data couldn’t cash. And he did it right in the midst of the Reformation and a little dust-up known as the Thirty-Years War. They block the absorption of other vital nutrients (like the ones in the potato) when consumed, and can harm your gut lining.

Pen: Drives 35 miles to the MVD office. “Closed”.

    Calls MVD

Pen: I just called and you said you were open, but the office is closed.

Pen: I need to register a truck.
MVD: We can’t do that online, you have to come in…..
    Pen: ???
MVD: Try again in a few weeks and see when we are open.

    NM finally opens MVD.

Pen: Calls last week and makes an appointment for this morning.
Pen: Calls this morning to verify.
MVD: I’m glad you called, we’re overbooked and can’t take care of it today. I can reschedule.
Pen: Okay, when can I bring it in?
    MVD: August 11, tentatively.
    Pen: ??? August?
MVD: Yes, that’s what they said to make it for.

Addicts do get clean sometimes. It is very difficult but they need to be introspective enough to understand that the plasticity of the brain which creates these feedback loops in the first place, is the same process that can also gradually undo them. The script is never overwritten completely, but enough to be able to resist the cravings for a long time or for life. There is hope.

The beaches are better on the gulf side. The fishing and cost of living are good too. Do some research but Martin County is the best county in Florida in my opinion. It’s on the Atlantic side but it’s a wealthy county, a conservative county and it’s north enough to stay out of the southern FL garbage. North of Martin is St. Lucie county and it’s not nearly as nice as Martin.

I live in Pinellas and the beaches are great, however, it’s a mixed bag here you could have a beautiful neighborhood and a couple of blocks away it’s…not so good.

Mare, the NYT and drudgereport need to apologize. I don’t know what happened to Drudge, but he’s just not the same as he used to be…I understand shitty, clickbait headlines make you wanna click and get him more money..but damn if some of this stuff isn’t outright lies.
Drudge had that NYTs thing running front page on his site

  193. Comment by Car in on June 8, 2020 3:08 pm

I know! I have to wait 2 weeks for it to get here, but it’s going to be worth it.

  194. Comment by Hotspur on June 8, 2020 3:09 pm

PJ, it isn’t Matt Drudge’s site anymore. He sold out.

    Don’t click on it.

  196. Comment by leoncaruthers on June 8, 2020 3:25 pm

Michigan’s public places won’t be free of them until Whitmer leaves office, Mare. As punishment for how we’ve all disappointed her.

    We need to be better.

Until enough people ignore unlawful orders, all restaurants and salons/barbers die under pressure, or the bitch leaves office. Whichever comes first.

  200. Comment by leoncaruthers on June 8, 2020 3:44 pm

I’d drop them in a heartbeat if they weren’t the only access to some content for my kid. I really need to find a way to decouple from those assholes.

  201. Comment by Jay in Ames on June 8, 2020 3:47 pm

I don’t think we are going to be able to avoid all companies that link with BLM, moving forward. This is being rammed through, and it isn’t the government doing it. It’s society.

  202. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on June 8, 2020 3:51 pm

You can’t avoid them all, but you can make some adjustments. I’ll probably keep Prime, since it’s the only entertainment service left, but I’m going to try and avoid buying too much from Amazon unless I can’t find it locally at all. I’ll pay a bit more for a local store.

  229. Comment by Pupster on June 8, 2020 7:49 pm

I love MKZs. A couple of jobs ago I got upgraded to a MKZ from a standard rental car, it was a great cruiser. It had a lot of gadgets, one button looked like windshield wipers but it wasn’t, I kept switching it on and off while I was driving and heard a noise but couldn’t tell what was happening until I looked in the rear view mirror…electric sun shades for the back window!

I didn’t have a fever. Nausea from allergies. Cramps from mask dehydration. TMI diarrhea from mucus draining into my GI tract. My temperature was 97.7 which is high for me. I’m so tired of quarantine. If I go out to a restaurant or church, I don’t get paid. I haven’t heard from the HR outsource yet. I want to work.

Yeah, it is. Some really high end luxury cars had it as options but not necessarily standard.

For the money, Lincoln has huge HP, awesome design, and great tech. They just suffer from legacy perception.

Family member was telling us to get our free Government money.

“Every small business owner is getting unemployment plus $600 a week, even if they weren’t closed down.”

    Free money!

    No thanks.

I have a feeling those people might be getting screwed come tax time.

You collect and you show no loss of income? They will want that money back plus interest and penalties.

I wouldn’t put it past them.

Thinking about Florida – my nephew’s wife was terrified that Gov. Kemp was going to kill all of Georgia with his reckless reopening of businesses. Complained that the grocery delivery services were booked up. Stay home, stay home, stay home. I guess she got over it because they spent the weekend at the Orlando theme parks.

  252. Comment by Teresa in Fort Worth, TX on June 8, 2020 10:10 pm

So the local ABC affiliate in DFW was doing an informal punch-in poll today – should the police be defunded or not?

At the top of the 6 o’clock hour, it was running 10% in favor of defunding and 90% against.

By the end of the broadcast – when the taxpaying, working audience got home and turned on their TV – it had gone to 4% for and 96% “Aw, Hell No”.

The (liberal black) newsreader seemed shocked by the results.
