Welcome to another edition of Hunky Hump Day.
I’m really ready to be done with this quarantine crap.

The RFH family watched “Die Hard” because Mini-me hadn’t seen it. Inspired by this, I bring you this week’s Easter egg with a probably-NSFW warning, but dayum, honey, John McClane would fly 2000 miles and kill terrorists for that.

Fake redhead for Carin.

Cold drink?

Looks like he ought to be a 1910’s meme.

Shadows.

Last, but not least, sunny.

Thank you for your attention, thanks to Pirate’s Cove for the linky love every week, and y’all have a good day.

Will always watch any of the Die Hard movies. They’re on often enough I’ve never felt the need to buy the series on disc.

ChrisP raised a good point last night. Of course C19 numbers are rising, we’re testing more people! I mean, that’s intuitive, but the media wants to spin it as “See what happens when you eat at a restaurant or get your haircut?!? Are you happy now Grandma killer?!?” Do you think they’ll also tout the decreased mortality of it as we discover it’s much more prevalent than was previously known? I think not. Just prolonged misery for the people unfortunate enough to live in their jurisdictions.

  7. Comment by MJ on April 29, 2020 7:05 am

Anything born of the media is a miscarriage. Forget it. There’s nothing useful coming from a regular media source.

This is a pretty good rationale for opening GA. You can see that the cases and deaths over time has basically dropped to nothing.

I’ve been trying to pinpoint the moment that I officially moved from being interested in Covid to not giving AF. I think it’s when the media and everyone on the left started tracking the race of infections and deaths. That was the huge, bright signal that it wasn’t really a big deal.

We’ve had 24 MJ and almost everyone was not only elderly, but in a nursing home or hospice.

But FUCKING GRETCHEN just divided Michigan into zones for reopening, and guess which region she put Lapeer in? Oh – that would be the same zone with Detroit 1682 deaths, Macomb 572, oakland 654 deaths, and Genesee 174 deaths.

    Fuck Gretchen.

    wakey wakey.

  18. Comment by leoncaruthers on April 29, 2020 7:55 am

I knew a extremely smashable Gretchen a while back, good looking Hungarian girl. Gretchen is sort of an Old German compound word meaning “little beauty”, iirc, sort of like a French girl named Belle.

Sometimes names are lived, other times they’re ironic.

At this point, I’m convinced COVID was more a threat to my well meaning through economic stagnation with its likely results than through any actual illness that might result. Mostly because the former may get me evicted, while the latter remains…nebulous at best.

  22. Comment by roamingfirehydrant on April 29, 2020 8:10 am

I did get “Die Hard” from Netflix because the last time I saw it on TV, they bleeped out “motherfucker”. I understand that for broadcast TV, but the iconic line needs to be there.

That, and trying to get on Mini-me’s calendar is not a small challenge.

  24. Comment by roamingfirehydrant on April 29, 2020 8:15 am

The DVD had the director’s commentary, too, and that was interesting. They didn’t have a finished script when they started shooting, so the scene with Hans and John McClane meeting only happened when they found out Alan Rickman could do an American accent. He hadn’t been in Hollywood very long, and I think this was his first movie.

Republicans for the Rule of Law is the principal initiative of the conservative, anti-Donald Trump political group Defending Democracy Together, founded by Bill Kristol, Mona Charen, Linda Chavez, Sarah Longwell, and Andy Zwick in 2019. The project, a 501(c)(4) group, created an advertising campaign to pressure Republican members of Congress to “demand the facts” about the Trump-Ukraine scandal during the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump.

It’s kind of the same scam as all of the NGOs, non profits, and charities. Many of them run expenses at 90+%.

It’s a nice way to fund an extravagant lifestyle on the backs of clueless rubes or wealthy people looking for influence.

I remember a corporate charity, perhaps the Daily Beast or Vanity Fair that hosted a huge event every year; well attended by powerful and wealthy people. But at the end of paying for the party, they basically had nothing to give so they would just repeat the cycle.

Yeah Carin, this has been a mental health disaster. We have patients now that we should never see. If you’re 80 and suddenly you can’t play cards with your friends or see your adult children, yeah, you’re going to get depressed.

When really old people get depressed, it can manifest as psychosis. And then you get sent to the hospital, where you…still can’t see anybody or do anything, but now you’re in a strange environment, too, surrounded by strangers. So you don’t get better, and you’re parked there, taking up the last precious time you have left on the fucking planet.

This is the line that Stacey Abrams used last night about rapey Joe.

I think it was pretty good. And let’s be honest, the response doesn’t have to be really effective, it just has to have a veneer of respectability to get everyone to shut up.

Her response: Asked and answered! I believe Joe because of his background and the fact that the NYT did a rigorous investigation and found no evidence to support her claim. Still support all women, but this one has been debunked.

This will work, I think. Joe will survive this part, but sadly, not his own brain.

Dont make me interrogate you. I own felt shears.

  70. Comment by beasn on April 29, 2020 1:04 pm

Went back to the store and bought about 20# of chicken. Fifteen of which I put in MIL’s freezer. Took 5 lbs over to the kids, where daughter was sitting outside, waiting for me. She wasn’t going to let me in the house with possible ebola cooties. I went in anyway to say ‘hi’ to SIL (who was still on the clock) and to check out the contents of their freezer. With the five I brought them, they now have 10 lbs. Yep, totally prepared for the continued zombie apocalypse.

I know I said I’d only give her beans, but the maternal instinct is strong….that, and that boy is already too skinny.

Anyhoo, had a nice visit out in her driveway. My niece showed up with the service dog (a boisterous black lab) they’ve been boarding/training. I think the pup had her trained better than my niece had her trained. Lort, it was painful and funny to watch. Niece got a little miffed when I put on my teacher hat and the dog listened to me.

  71. Comment by MJ on April 29, 2020 1:12 pm

    How did it shoot?
    ———————–
Very nicely. Almost no recoil and def no muzzle rise between rounds. I was able to hit a 6 inch target every time at 50 and 75 feet (indoor range). And I’m not a particularly good shot.

Did you break it down and lube/clean it?
    ————————
Not yet. It’s on my list of things to do in the next few days. I only put 50 rounds through it. Supposed to lube first but I was all like, yep, gonna shoot it right now. Lube can wait.

Being a non traditional mechanism, does it require special attention to certain areas?
    ——————————
It doesn’t. Just regular maintenance like any rifle. It’s pretty simple to take apart. 4 pins hold the upper and lower together to clean it or to switch calibers.

    Optic?
    ——————-
Flip up sites on the rail. Seemed to work perfectly fine. I’m going to hold off on any changes until I get more comfortable with it.

Pros – light, accurate, fun to shoot.

Cons – the mag drops out really fast.

I give it 76 out of 77 fully lubed Gretchens.

  72. Comment by beasn on April 29, 2020 1:16 pm

The one thing I can’t stand about dogs is when they jump all over you. When niece gave the command ‘free’, the dog knows she can go off script…which she immediately did to jump all over daughter.
Wth, I’d think that’d be one of the first things you teach a service dog – not to jump on humans. I told her I didn’t want her jumping on me, so she had to hold on to her leash until she calmed down enough for me to greet her and give her some skritchies. My command to ‘sit’ was heeded but oh man, the dog whined and twitched, fighting against her nature to stay ‘down’.

And I don’t know how many times niece put her fingers in the dog’s mouth to pull out rocks/twigs/helicopters.

The people who walk around outdoors by themselves wearing a mask and gloves make me think that they must believe this virus is in the natural air all around them.
    ———————————
My fav so far is people driving around in their cars masked and gloved.

I guess there could be some reason but that seems like a pretty long throw to get away from assing crazy.

  93. Comment by MJ on April 29, 2020 4:43 pm

There’s a couple in our neighborhood that walk everyday. They look like the invisible man. Wrapped up tight with nothing showing and always in sunglasses.

    But she’s Asian so…

Beasn, I miss the Service Dog Trainers that used to train in our Club in the morning. There was a Boston Terrier that was totally enamored by the diamond case. She got in trouble for putting nose prints on the glass. There was a puppy that didn’t even make it in the Club on her first visit. She was so excited, she missed three straight outdoor commands. There was a Lab that was doing well until he made it to the back of the Club. They’re supposed to Stay in position while the trainer walks away. The Lab kept going up to Associates for scritches. Trainer took him out of the Club. He finally graduated, but it took him several weeks to stop going over to Dan.

If you work where you are required to wear a mask the whole shift, it’s pretty easy to just walk out to your car and go home, forgetting you have it on. You forget you’re wearing it, especially because you’re not trying to talk to anybody or do anything strenuous.

But nitrile gloves? No fucking way. Those things get sweaty-nasty in a minute. That’s insanity. Everybody peels them off as soon as they can.

  96. Comment by Jay in Ames on April 29, 2020 4:53 pm

anyone else set to start opening up? In my town, they want to stay closed, as far as I can tell. Haven’t found anyone opening up.

  97. Comment by beasn on April 29, 2020 4:55 pm

About half the people I see in grocery stores are masked. Most of the employees are masked – some with their noses sticking out. Other than deli, butcher, and some cashiers, no other employee wears gloves.
Some customers are wearing gloves and touch all the things that non-gloved people touch. What a pain in the ass extra work they must go through to get their stuff home and sterilized. I just grab a wipe when I get into the store and grab three on my way out. Anything not requiring refrigeration, I leave on the table for a few hours before putting away.

Masks are great if you have bad breath. Hate walking in/passing thru someone’s noxious breath cloud.

  98. Comment by beasn on April 29, 2020 4:56 pm

Walmart provides no wipes for customers and while someone is standing there with a spray bottle, I have never seen that someone spray down cart handles. Maybe we’re supposed to ask them?

  99. Comment by MJ on April 29, 2020 4:58 pm

Some places around here are opening. But there’s a full court press to shame businesses into staying closed.

Every headline is HOW MANY WILL DIE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO OPEN?

I hate that everything is so black and white. Reasonable people can’t even talk anymore.

  100. Comment by beasn on April 29, 2020 4:59 pm

Jay, I’m seeing more and more small businesses turning on their ‘open’ signs, around here. May take awhile before the people, who the media has scared shitless, to go back.

Never in my wildest imagination did I think that a fucking virus would become a political issue, but by God, it sure has.

It really makes me think that this is like a married couple who no longer love each other. There is no hope of reconciliation. We should just get a divorce.

We are moving from stage 4 (only people talking to astronauts on ISS) to stage 3 (“mission essential” work), probably Monday. I will still be mostly teleworking but on call for making measurements. I am ready to get back in the lab.

We shut down over 3 cases. I still think it made the rounds already when the Italians visited.

  104. Comment by Jay in Ames on April 29, 2020 5:09 pm

I hear you about the full court press against opening, MJ. I was going to go out Friday to support a business, but I haven’t found one that’s open.

There is no common ground. I do not think, look at the world, act or speak like a lefty. I believe 100% that lefties have mental disorders.

I don’t know if it’s the low-fat diets, lack of red meat, soy, lack of testosterone, too much estrogen, plastics in containers and water, fluoride fossilizing our pineal gland, I have no effing idea but they are effing nuts and there are a lot of them. I don’t want them around, and I know they don’t want me around. Actually being around them makes me sick. I only live where I live* because of my daughter, otherwise, I’d try to find a conservative, beach enclave (harder than shit to find).

*Where I live used to be a wonderful, low key, older population, conservative town. Now it’s full of faggots and lesbians and northern liberals who are insufferable.

It’s pretty simple. They are driven by greed and envy with a dollop of sloth. Demrats are very good at tapping into that and turning those sorts into reliable dependent Karens.

For a walk in the woods?

We were walking towards each other. When she noticed us she quickly turned around and went the other way.

    People are terrified.

    People are terrified.

    ——–

Why? Because the dumbasses have the news on 24/7. And they are likely watching CNN.

It’s immoral that the news has frightened people enough to make them WANT to stay in their homes.

Again, the educational system dick heads have done their jobs well.

People are not critical thinkers. They can’t do their own basic “research” (google search). They can’t see the big picture. They are too self-focused. They don’t understand or have ever read the Constitution and have zero knowledge of history, our Founding Fathers and who has died for what in this country.

I’m willing to risk my life (ha! because there is almost zero risk) to get our way of life up and going.

I’m back to my regular office schedule next week. There was a meeting posted for sometime this week about opening up for elective surgery. I really don’t know if there have been furloughs, I’m sure there have been. If you have zero patients on the peds ward and one kid in the PICU you don’t need nurses or ancillary staff hanging around. Our office cut hours for the secretarial and ancillary staff.

I was talking with one of the trauma ortho guys last week and he said the guys in private practice have been snatching up trauma cases they ordinarily just admit and turn over to the trauma group. They primarily do elective cases and have their own surgicenter which can’t operate so they’re desperate for any income at all.

    rinse/repeat…30 seconds later…

Well. Tomorrow is the long-overdue payment of rent deadline. I will be able to…barely…with ~$30 left over…if nothing goes awry.

“If”. Such a large word for only two letters.

And then I have three days for the NEXT one.

Meanwhile the useless donut-eaters at the IRS STILL have not processed my tax return and STILL have not sent my CoronaCheck.

Funny, what I owe MUST BE PAID, but what I’m owed will be paid…eventually…maybe.

Pray I never gain power and influence. I believe in pre-emptive strikes, parting shots, and highly disproportionate retribution.
