MMM 402: Beltany Stone Circle

Good morning.

Beltany-Stone-Circle-19_FULL.jpg

This is the Beltany Stone Circle, built somewhere between 4000 and 2700 years ago.  That’s a nice, wide gap in time, which means we really can’t date it, chances are it was “in use” for hundreds if not thousands of years after initial construction, which makes dating the first human activity troublesome.  The nearest modern humans live in a town called Raphoe, in the county of Donegal, in modern Ireland.

10-beltany-stone-circle.jpg

Today the circle has only 64 large stones, but is believed to have once had 80 or more.

1200px-Beltony_stone_circle_at_sunset.jpg

Closer view, you can see a pronounced lean on many of the taller stones as time and gravity make strong suggestions.

That stone on the far right won’t be “standing” much longer.  Might fall all the way over in another century or so.

Happy Monday.  May the governors betraying their oaths suffer greatly this day, and every day until they relent and recognize the rights endowed by God almighty.

  1. Rock on!

  2. And here we are. We got most of the chicken fence staked in yesterday. Today we need to frame in the gate panel, then do the “roof” and the chicken wire around the bottom edge.

  3. wakey wakey

  4. Michigan deaths last 7 days.
    115, 166, 153, 172, 134, 81, 83

  5. That’s a cool pic of sunrise in the center of the stones. I’m sure on purpose. Beautiful. I could watch shows on this kind of stuff nonstop.

It’s a horribly windy, rainy day here.

I really and truly did not know it was Monday until I heard the garbage truck.

It appears all we can do is pray for people in power to stop this shut down insanity. If called to protest I will. I’ve been worked up over this since the start, I’m getting a malaise. This is what they want. I’m fighting it.

  6. Effing Harvard.

    <script async src=

  7. Do not question The Cause™.

  8. It’s funny, because my kids had a ton more free time than kids at public schools. Didn’t they eliminate recess across the nation?

  9. I know that schools spend at least half of the school day dicking around.

It’s pretty obvious you could get done in 2 hours what it takes a school 6.

  10. Since I don’t watch the news, I need your help, I know the numbers are crashing, why are we still stuck in our homes and even more “effing restrictions” are being “proclaimed upon us?”

  11. FREE THE CHICKENS!

  12. I have to write a check to the state of southern canada which just chaps my furry butt.

I spent the weekend catering to Mrs. Pupster’s every need while she plowed through the taxes.

  13. How many chicks are left, Leon?

  14. The new panic is the second wave of infections when you release the quarantined, Mare. Apparently we will never be free of this meddlesome virus.

  15. We’re supposed to forget that the plan was “flatten the curve” and now plan B is “zero infections is the goal”.

  16. Speaking of flattened curves, good morning CARin.

  17. Wow, I didn’t realize MI was only 3X the population of iowa. Your daily death totals are more than our cumulative numbers.

    Public transport in Detroit?

  18. Also thank you for these poats, leon. I didn’t realize we had so many historical sites in the last 4K years since creation.

  19. To be fair, it’s not zero infections. It’s 1 per million, or 300 for our entire county, 9 for MI. 3 for Iowa.

  20. That. And the poor health of urban blacks made them very susceptible (my opinion)

  21. On my way into work this morning I definitely saw a lot more vehicles on the road. All it took was Trump saying we should open things up and people listened. #fuckthepols. Demonstration planned in Augusta sometime this week. Saw a video on NY Post of “healthcare workers” blocking demonstrations while wearing scrubs and masks/hats. Anyone can pick up scrubs … I wonder when the Dems will figure that out and start Corona-shaming demonstrators?

  22. We still have all 6 birds, but they’re much too big to stay in the horse trough for more than a couple more days. Hoping to get the “gate” fence section built this afternoon and get them out there on Tuesday. The hard part is building anything while we trade off watching the 4yo.

  23. In front of the 4200 Blk of Baldwin Rd. Priority 1, PIA. A < was ejected, and covered in blood. He wasn't conscious, and was making a snoring noise. He had a broken femur as the bone was sticking out. Caller thinks he was possibly ejected 50ft.

    😦

Happened about 2 miles from me. Still don’t know why. He was at the home of a woman I know from crossfit – hanging out with her daugther and some friends. It was on the way home from her house, but I don’t know the time of day or whether drinking was involved. He doesn’t seem the type- he was a nice solid kid. Maybe a deer? But he wasn’t wearing his seat belt.

  24. This week I’m guessing we start hearing…

    ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION

as authoritarian government resists loosening up restrictions.

  25. Oh yeah, Happy 4/20 Potheads!

  26. Detroit is majority black, majority overweight/obese, and majority type-2 diabetic, Jay.

There’s a ton more public transportation use in Ann Arbor, but none of those descriptors hold, and it has higher population density.

  27. Here are the phrases I never want to hear again:

    Flatten the curve
    Apex
    Ventilator
    Supply chain disruption
    N95
    PPE
    Frontline heroes
    Vector

    Did I miss any?

  28. It was “early morning”. Which can mean 2 am. But Gage used to hang out and spend the night here sometimes, so it could mean early morning. If kids are drinking, that’s usually what we all make them do.

  29. MJ: new normal.

  30. Leon, my fear is that so far we’ve learned that this disease disproportionately affects minorities.

But soon we’ll hear that it disproportionately affects black women cuz health issues.

And therefore, the blessed Tank shall be chose to lose as the VP with Biden.

  31. Bus transport is heavily used in detroit though. I’m just saying.

  32. New normal. That’s a good one.

  33. The whole university bus system is very heavily used. You might be right about Detroit, but I suspect there’s a bigger % of the pop in Ann Arbor riding the bus daily.

  34. Nothing good happens after midnight.

  35. Population in AA is young and mostly healthy. Detroit bus use is for mostly poorer folks to get to work.

  36. Sounds like medical conditions are important, as well as being in close proximity for extended periods.

  37. “Since I don’t watch the news, I need your help,”

    ORANGE MAN BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. Yea, Scott. I don’t know though. It’s a not well traveled road. There are some hills – some major ones. Gullies along the side. VERY wooded. He wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, and chances are great that if he had been, this wouldn’t have happened.

  39. Here are the phrases I never want to hear again:
    —————-
As I drove to work this morning and flipped between stations I heard “flattening the curve” and had the exact same thought

  40. Did I miss any?

    – granular

  41. They had a story on the news this morning about the effort to keep school lunches available.

You should have seen the pile of food, in bags. This is just one of them:

That. And the poor health of urban blacks made them very susceptible (my opinion)

    ——

Not just your opinion. Obesity, diabetes, kidney problems any inflammatory deal is not good with this virus. This, unfortunately, speaks to the poor communities in every state.

  43. For the past month we’ve been having a Quarantini on Sunday afternoon with our friends – all liberals.

When I got on the call yesterday they were in the midst of talking about who the VP pick would be. Lots of talk about a woman. a woman of color, a black woman, a strong woman, a strong black woman.

I just sat and ate my cheese and crackers, when suddenly Val says: “What do you think, Geoff?”

I said, “I find it fascinating that out of 20 some candidates, you guys ended up with Joe Fucking Biden, and now all you can talk about is who his VP choice is going to be. Not about what his policies are, or what he’ll do if elected. It’s almost like you all realize he’s shit. How did this happen?”

    LOL silence

  44. ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION

    ——–

My husband’s dearest friend’s daughter was getting married on May 23. We changed traveling plans to attend. We just received a new invitation that said “out of an abundance of caution” they moved the “celebration of their wedding” to July 24, 2021.

I don’t blame them for having to change things around. But the abundance of caution deal made me puke and waiting over a full year for a party is annoying.

From what I understand, they will get married (officially) soon.
They are living together so it seems kind of “so what?” to my husband and me.

  45. Your liberal friends have been lulled into a false sense of security with you since you don’t usually voice your view.

  46. I said, “I find it fascinating that out of 20 some candidates, you guys ended up with Joe Fucking Biden, and now all you can talk about is who his VP choice is going to be. Mare loves Hotspur.

  47. Your liberal friends have been lulled into a false sense of security with you since you don’t usually voice your view.

True. But to be more accurate, the rule is no politics, but I came in in the middle of their jizzfest so I kinda got dragged into it. If I’d been on the call from the start, the conversation never would have gone that way.

Oh well, it was fun, and I think I gave them something to ponder.

    NOT

  48. I want Gretchen Whitmer in solitary confinement for the rest of her life. 1 day for every day she imposed for every person she imposed it on would stretch out for millennia at this point.

  49. Something about Whitmer is really off. Besides her looks, which I hate, (very phony with a shit ton of Botox, and her mouth set up makes her speech annoying) she’s proved to be a controlling bitch.

Obviously, she was elected governor, people like her, I’m biased, not denying that, however, am I wrong? Is she likable? Take out all the politics, is she likable? Maybe housewife rises to power kind of deal?

  50. She could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch.

  51. She’s a power hungry bitch and always has been.

  52. Never held a real job. Law school to politics thing.

  53. And she’s divorced. So her husband got sick of her shit too.

  54. Never held a real job. Law school to politics thing.

    ——

    I hate her even more.

Yes, I used the word hate. Do you know you are supposed to hate evil? Well, you are.

  55. Obviously, she was elected governor, people like her,

Not necessarily. She was the D on the ticket in a bad year for Rs against weak opponent who’s name is lost even to me, and at the same time as legal weed.

As Hotspur notes, she likely “achieved” her way through the ranks of the D party on her knees or back. It’s an honored local tradition, Monica Conyers and Debbie Dingell are witness to that.

  56. I don’t like it when people are “against” Trump and they spend a lot of time talking about his looks. That’s fine, you don’t have to like how someone looks. And I don’t like Whitmer’s looks but Trump has never taken rights away (to my knowledge) and Whitmer seems to actually enjoy watching people squirm when she imposes shit on them.

    I’m justifying my possible hypocrisy.

  57. It’s okay, Mare, she’s a post-Wall botoxed and blowdried hobag of epic proportions.

Tar and feathers would be too kind.

  58. she’s a post-Wall botoxed and blowdried hobag of epic proportions.

    hhashhahahah

    Mare loves Leon.

  59. We spoke to GNDs grandma last night. Trump derangement is real.

My FIL apparently almost got into a fist fight with his brother, told off his ex-wife, and hasn’t spoken to his mother in 2 weeks because he can’t stop talking about OMB. It’s all the orange man’s fault.

Get this. He was being super smart and telling everyone that all of the racist, capitalist Trump supporters can just mail their stimulus checks back to the government. You know, his graft is justified because he believes in it but his mother and brother have no right to it.

His mom called him a communist and hung up on him.

    LOL

  60. As Leon pointed out, she ran against a nobody, (I also cannot even recall his name) against a successful governor who was term-limited (thanks idiots). And in a mid-year-backlash election.

    Her resume is shit.

  61. My dad could be a challenge at times – union sheet metal worker in his younger adult years before he learned system design in his 40s and became white collar.

But he never owned a business, or ever signed a paycheck, so he could be pretty pro-union at times, but never actually anti-business or anti-capitalist.

So I could argue him into seeing the real world. I give him credit because he could admit his lack of balance, and come around to see my viewpoints.

I couldn’t imagine having a Carin Mom or GND Dad in my family. On second thought, actually I could. They would not be welcome at my house.

  62. Your father in law is a Grade A jackass.

  63. I should have bought him an all expense paid trip to NYC the moment I heard WUFLU was breaking out.

You know, take in the sights/sites maybe attend the Chinatown lunar festival parade.

  64. Schuette! That was the other guy!

  65. Wow! Leon, I could actually not recall his name, and it was only two years ago.

  66. My father was a union representative until he owned his own business. Boy, did he see another side to things.

My mother was always a staunch pro-business, republican.

  67. I saw it in an Instapundit comment thread and realized to whom they were referring. I’d never have remembered on my own.

They could have used Upton (who sucks, but isn’t Whitmer, and has been in congress for almost my entire life) and instead went with Shuette.

  68. My father was an Irish (and German) Catholic democrat until my Mother straightened him out (SYWM).

  69. I never want to hear ” stay home stay safe” again. Every E-mail from work is signed off with it.

  70. Vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms of Covid?

For some people. Read an article somewhere that those whose guts are also affected have a worse outcome/harder fight.

It’s Day 7 for our friend. Hopefully she makes it over the hump of Day 10 (that’s when it seems shit really hits the fan).

  71. LOL My dad’s standard way of saying good-bye was, “Keep it between the ditches.”

That’s what I’m going to start ending my emails with.

  72. That. And the poor health of urban blacks made them very susceptible

Fedzilla just gave St. Louis County $117M to ‘battle’ this virus. *cough* The county executive was talking about the poor outcomes in the various black communities and says he will use most of those funds to those ‘underserved communities’. See, because all those fat lards, are in poor health because they don’t have proper access to good healthcare because rayciss and not because they make horrible diet choices and don’t move beyond the distance of sofa to fridge or car to house when bringing home the fast food.

Yes! That one makes me puke.

  74. Daughter had diarrhea for 5 straight days along with fever, I got sick about a week later.

I’ve had it, I’m positive, as has likely every family in my parish, since most of them have kids or grandkids in the school.

  75. We now have 79 deaths in Iowa.

  76. wouldn’t diarrhea be more easily explained by norovirus, instead of covid?

We now have 79 deaths in Iowa.

    ——-

I wonder how many those are really and truly Covid?

    (Not trying to be snarky)

  78. Just ran across a interesting documentary on you tube titled Science of the Soul. Watched it a few years back and then couldn’t find it. Anyway, I found it very entertaining and it has a reincarnation story in it that is beyond bizarre amongst other things. I give it a 9/10.

The whole open or closed situation seems to be breaking along political lines…..interesting times.

  79. get ready for higher meat prices. They are shutting down meat packing plants in Iowa and South Dakota. Some for cleaning, others for more significant lengths of time. There are huge flareups of Covid at those plants.

Some farmers are being refused shipping full weight livestock, because of these shutdowns. Some might have to euthanize that stock, because they can no longer be housed in barns and other buildings.

  80. wouldn’t diarrhea be more easily explained by norovirus, instead of covid?

Possible, but I’ve worked at facilities that were having widespread outbreaks of norovirus and never taken ill before.

  81. I need to get that chest freezer. I’m due to buy a whole beef first thing in June.

The whole open or closed situation seems to be breaking along political lines…..interesting times.

It shouldn’t, but rightwingers tend to be better about accepting risk.

  82. Carin, that’s horrifying news about Erin’s friend. Can’t imagine what his family is going through. Good lord.

  83. These kids are my new heroes. I hope when the cops chase them they get away and give them the finger as they’re doing it.

    <script async src=

  84. I was going to manage all my mulching needs with autumn leaves and cover crops this year but I saw a price on hay so good on craigslist I just caved. From a farmer that raises the hay herself and doesn’t use roundup. Score.

  85. I love these people who assume that there always has to be some good justification for exerting control over people. Like the people who believe the global warming hoax. They can’t believe its a hoax, because if it is, then what purpose does it serve, to have people turn down their thermostats and lead smaller lives? The goal is power and control, in and of itself. Control is as exciting as sex for the people pushing this nonsense on us. Is sex a goal in and of itself? Yep. Same thing.

I’m at the point now where I believe the part where they squeeze you for money, too, is nearly an afterthought.

  86. They can’t believe its a hoax, because if it is, then what purpose does it serve, to have people turn down their thermostats and lead smaller lives? The goal is power and control, in and of itself. Control is as exciting as sex for the people pushing this nonsense on us.

Ironically these are the same people most likely to be into BDSM, and fail to translate the obvious correlation when it comes to pols pushing their favored policies.

  89. One of the group of scientists and engineers I worked with on an experiment 12 years ago passed away. It happened before Wuhan Flu, and I don’t know what killed him. He was in much better shape than me and only 63.

So I let the other people on that project know, the ones I still have email addresses for. One in Seattle replied back that he already knew, he just assumed I knew, then went into a rant on Trump. Good Lord, the hate. I didn’t like Obama, but I didn’t tie every fucking bad thing in the world to his incompetence, and I could say “sorry for your loss” without bringing fucking politics into it. Sometimes I just want to tell the left, you people need more Jesus.

  90. The same RESIST! people are the ones who proclaimed that protesting is patriotism.

But now they’re the ones proclaiming that skateboarders are evil, and people who want to go back to work should shut up and stay home.

    They’re cunts.

  91. Karens.

  92. One guy on Facedouche said “What happened to “My body, my choice?”” when arguing with Lefties about quarantines.

  93. LOL Keep your laws off my body.

  94. Until you’ve held a job you don’t get to have an opinion.

  95. I need more Jesus, too, because I look at people like Pelosi and Whitmer and wish for the coronavirus to take them out, then I feel bad because I shouldn’t do that.

  137. Are you going?

Imgur appears to think all the lockdown protests are astroturf. Self awareness is nonexistent on the left.

  138. Crap. I got a reminder last Friday that orientation for the class at the CC was still on for today. But it wasn’t. All doors were locked and I got zero notification like I did the first time it was cancelled and they rescheduled me. F*ckers.
Sent them an email to ask them wtf.

  139. Erin is going with a friend. I’m sure it will be packed. It’s a car thing, so … may as well leave room for the kids.

  140. Apparently, Gage was with a small group of friends at this girl’s house. The girl doesn’t like erin, so called Erin’s good friend Matt and told him (I don’t know how she found out so quickly – perhaps because it was close to her house?) . Matt called erin in the morning crying, but couldn’t tell her. He didn’t want to break her heart. Erin just thought it was Matt being weird.

Matt came over earlier today and he wouldn’t even say hi to me. He’s destroyed.

  141. Husband went for walkies while I was out. I came home shortly after he did. I noticed all the police lights over the crest of the main road. Husband said two idiot young people were racing each other down that road –had to be going 80 or more where speed limit is 40 –which is dumb as shit because that particular crest is a major blind spot. One clipped the other but fortunately noone was terribly hurt. They are lucky. Husband told the cops what he saw the idiots do.

  142. That so sucks Car in.

  143. What class are you taking, beasn?

  144. Still don’t know what caused the accident. Heard rumors. But I’m not going with that.

  145. It is awful, though I’ve neglected to say so. I cannot imagine losing my daughter. I don’t think I’d survive that.

  146. This road had a hill with a really bad blind spot too.

  147. Well, luckily the mom is a horrible person, and while she’s saying she’s sad …

I worked with her. Gage wouldn’t talk to her for years. Parents divorced. Her page is just filled with pictures of her and her boyfriend.

But gage was well loved by a lot of people.

  148. Erin just left. She’s a mess already. She wrote a really long note to him on a paper bag (they’re doing candles in paper bags). She has a couple dozen bags with her. Flower, etc.

  149. Huh. Being outside is actually good for you. 80% of outbreaks of 3 or more in China started in the home. another 35% public transport.
