Quick Hitter

My post got eaten in the mail when WordPress effed up. This is a pale imitation of the glorious post I had prepared. Not angry. Nope.

I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t be here today if an ancestor (or 50) of mine didn’t kill some people, neither would most of us.

The idea that at least a few of them also weren’t especially modern in their thinking of what amount of consent was needed for conception doesn’t strike me as unlikely either.

That said, I know the majority of them would only have had willing relations and stayed around to be good parents, because instinct alone draws me to that outcome.

the left is really gunning for him, and he isn’t the smoothest talker. It’s a deep red district, but Ames was put in his district, so now the blue college students are all up in arms about him. He’s a really nice guy, one of the few my mom and dad donate campaign money to. They are on his list.

Got done with the Clancy audiobooks again, so I’ve been listening to music again. The Wall, still really good.

It’s any of a group of greens, a variety of chicory with a tender leaf, used for both salads, braises, and soup greens.

I am growing sugarloaf, which forms a long, crunchy, mild flavored head. And an ‘endive’ type called broad-leaf batavian, which forms a rosette of loose leaves that are pale yellow in the heart and make a nice wilted salad with some hot bacon grease.

I was gonna grow chinese cabbage this year too but I think I ran out of time. I was sidetracked by the kitchen project. Oh well, next year. I have way too many regular ball cabbages just sitting out there in the garden anyway.

I’m headed out on a job interview tomorrow afternoon after turning down a job last Friday. It’s only for a 1-year contract, and I’d have to commute 60-90 minutes twice a day, 5 days a week for the first three months, then transitioning down to some smaller number of days/week.

I should just cancel and hold on to my current work until everything really falls apart.

I recommend riding a company into death and even to the underworld if at all possible. The times I quit when there was trouble and jumped like a flea to another company, I ended up in a new frying pan/fire situation while my former coworkers waited it out and coasted on funemployment and took their time finding places they wanted to work.

With the start up of the new school year, daughter called yesterday upset with her first day. “People suck…parents lie…too much effing paperwork (she’s speech pathologist), I just need to find a job where I don’t have to work with people.”

Hmm, I suggested she work with older folks since you won’t have to deal with their parents. Paperwork would be the same because medicaid/medicare, but old farts probably are more motivated and the time with them isn’t as long as with kids with various other behavioral ‘issues’.

She’s a perfect candidate for SAHM but she’s accepted her fate of earning more than the boy, who doesn’t seem at all motivated to work more than his 3 days/week. (yes there is overtime but not every week)

Laura, I’m closer to 40 than 39. Ms. Peel apparently has “plans” for my 40th.

I work in the engineering department of a company that makes commercial HVAC equipment.

First 6 years I was in an “application engineering” role, which doesn’t have anything to do with writing software. We were glorified technical support. Mostly pre-sales, but lots of post-sales as well. We helped people figure out which product they needed. If they already knew that, we helped size it. If they needed something special, we’d figure that out and shepherd it through production. I was one of the first two guys in the new role. It meant interfacing with almost every other department in the company and learning like drinking from a firehose. I was managing the group for the last 4 of those years, but the Application group is considered junior to the Development group and it was effective a deadend.

Two years ago the ownership made a very questionable call that saw the Director of Engineering leave, but not before he moved me over to the Development side to fill a seat they’d been trying for months and months to fill by stealing an experienced person from a competitor. This role was as a “junior” engineer to jump in and help a severely overworked product engineer and eventually take over one of his lines. Turns out he also had plans to leave after the questionable decision, it just took him a little longer to get things in order. I spent a few months buried under his load complete workload until they finally split it up, giving the line I could have tolerated to another guy and leaving me with the line I absolutely didn’t want.

It’s been two years of trickling out resumes, with the only feedback being a link to an online “aptitude test” which was really just an illegal IQ test in disguise.

I don’t know your background or skill set Will, but I’ve used recruiters I found through LinkedIN for my last two jobs. The Mason Group found me some good prospects in my industry, but I don’t know if they have a division for your particular set of skills.

Did that cost you anything, pupster?

The new Director of Engineering is trying to grow the department. He’s got feelers out with recruiters and is a heavy LinkedIn user. He’s on there all the time checking for prospects to steal away from competitors. I’m not on there, and to suddenly show up would probably give it away that I’m looking. My resume would contain all the keywords he’s looking for. The VP of Engineering has a mercurial temper and habit of firing people he finds out are looking.

Getting fired would be a good thing. You need this door to close in order to open the next one. You are way too afraid of these douchebags.

NYC honors women by putting up statues of drag queens. You can’t make this stuff up. https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/for-statues-honoring-women-ny-first-lady-nixes-vote-winner-st-frances-chooses-drag-queens

Jay, no…the recruiters I use get paid by the company that hires me. It actually is a good motivator for the company to be thorough in the process, and since you are an investment they have higher motivation to make it work out.

Will, you can search around on LinkedIn without creating a profile, and you can also create a profile without advertising that you are looking. I found the Mason Group on LI and then hit their website and found the recruiter for my area, everything was through my burner cell phone and gmail. The hard part was getting privacy during the work day at the office for phone calls and interviews, but my boss knew I was looking to get out of southern Canada and I always gave him a full day’s work.

I’m posting because I just need to vent – haven’t read any comments, so apologies if I sound out of left field.

Today was my parents’ 60th anniversary. It was also their last anniversary.

My mom doesn’t want me to tell any of her friends or extended family about her diagnosis, and I have been instructed not to put anything on Facebook or my blog. So you guys are going to be my sounding board – I just need to talk about this; no responses needed.

This was supposed to be a celebratory visit. My nephew was finally reconnecting with our family after over 10 years away (his mom died in 2008, and he has been dealing with family deaths ever since. He has been overwhelmed).

Instead, everyone – my parents included – was blindsided by the news that my Mom has cancer, and she will probably not be around in 6 months.

My poor nephew is beside himself. He plans to come and visit Mom and Dad as often as possible, but there simply isn’t enough time, and my heart is just breaking for him.

All of us are heading to our respective homes tomorrow. It was a wonderful visit, but as happy as we were to all be together again, the overwhelming feeling has been sadness.

I am mentally exhausted. I am so grateful to have this forum to put my thoughts into words.

    Thank you, everyone.
