HHD

Good morning, and welcome to another edition of Hunky Hump Day. I found a new source of HHD fodder, so I am a happy camper. Let’s get started.
The song is a repeat, but it’s been a while.

Now for the hunks.

Yes.

Light and shadow.

Reminds me of Jason Momoa.

Nice smile.

Last, but not least.

Thank you for your attention, thanks to Pirate’s Cove for the linky love every week, and y’all have a good day.

I’ve had “Swinging on a Star” stuck in my head for days now. There are worse earworms. It is, however, motivating me to see if I can stream “Going My Way” over the weekend. I’m just in the mood for something like that.

  14. Comment by Jay in Ames on November 28, 2018 9:17 am

Evidently there are things about Shapiro that I am not aware of. I only know him through the youtube videos of his college lectures. Apart from that I’ve watched a few of his podcasts, but otherwise I know almost nothing else. I’ve never read any of his books.

If Ace has issues with him, I’ve evidently missed posts where he has laid them out.

I’ll just leave it at that.

  17. Comment by Brother Cavil on November 28, 2018 9:32 am

Shapiro’s pro-deplatforming. A sufficiently cynical observer would say he’s using the SJWs to take out his competition. I’ve no use for someone willing to do that.

  18. Comment by Jay in Ames on November 28, 2018 9:35 am

what do you mean by pro-deplatforming?

  19. Comment by Car in on November 28, 2018 9:40 am

Oschi update: Follows me around insanely. Ate last night pretty well. This morning she wanted more treaty things, and didn’t touch her bowl (but she may have eaten before I woke up – she does that). Not a ton of energy, but a little lethargic. That’s to be expected. Coughs still, but sounds like a productive cough.

  33. Comment by Car in on November 28, 2018 10:27 am

I read Shapiro, and he often makes very good arguments. But then sometimes he doesn’t.

Same is true with Jonah Goldberg. His latest book is phenomenal. As I told Pat, the man is educated, and his ability to digest the works of others and lay it out in a cohesive manner is good. Analyzing the situation in front of him? Not necessarily as good. Perhaps he’s too close to some issues, and entanglements since he’s become a beltway insider. But he hasn’t gone Max Boot.

  34. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 28, 2018 10:29 am

  42. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 28, 2018 10:45 am

If Twitter is a publisher (they are) then they have a mountain of trouble coming in terms of liability/slander/etc. Shapiro ignores that because his ox is yet to be gored.

  43. Comment by MJ on November 28, 2018 10:46 am

GM makes shit cars. No one wants the volt of the cruze.

Their long term plan isn’t to make cars at all. Only trucks, SUVs, and crossovers.

    Good luck!

But Trump will bail them out somehow to keep the jerbs.

  44. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on November 28, 2018 10:50 am

  45. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 28, 2018 10:51 am

CAFE standards make the “truck only” model essentially impossible, as I understand it. Ford would like to just make F-series trucks if they could. The Escort only existed to keep their “fleet mpg” high enough.

Please correct me if I’ve got bad info here, but that’s what I was told by a number of folks.

I drive a Mini. It’s a hell of a car, and a blast to drive. Could Ford or GM make something to compete with the Mini? Yeah, probably, but they’re idiots, so they don’t.

  50. Comment by Hotspur on November 28, 2018 11:02 am

    I also drive a Porsche.

GM’s idea of a sports car is the fucking Corvette – an overpowered platform with unstable suspension – piece of shit.

Ford’s idea is the Mustang – same characteristics with blind spots all over the fucking place.

Chrysler tried the Viper – LOL.

  51. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on November 28, 2018 11:02 am

The problem for Ford and GM is that the majority of Americans don’t want to drive Minis. They want to drive F-150s and Yukons.

  52. Comment by Hotspur on November 28, 2018 11:04 am

You are correct CoAl, but if they made a good Mini at least people would buy it. But they don’t. They make a garbage piece of shit just to appease the EPA.

  53. Comment by mare on November 28, 2018 11:05 am

Bottom line, Goldberg and Shapiro cannot say that Trump is kickass because their pride gets in the way.

“What? How is it possible someone as smart as I am got this entirely wrong? Hey, is it possible that America needed a new kind of leader, not a spiritual leader but someone who puts Americans and American interests first? And this new kind of leader doesn’t blow smoke up all our asses like all other politicians before him have done?”

  54. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on November 28, 2018 11:06 am

I doubt that enough people would buy it to justify the production costs.

  56. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on November 28, 2018 11:11 am

I not so sure. I suspect that part of their appeal is the “European” nature of the vehicles.

  57. Comment by terribletroy on November 28, 2018 11:24 am

“Yeah, but now we want them to go back to piss poor management decisions that caused them to almost declare bankruptcy before?”

Go back to?? Seems to me if your’e laying off 14,000 people right before the holidays they never left the piss poor mgmt stage to begin with. But, I do admit to not knowing about anything GM business outside of ultra shallow perspective

Its shitty optics for them that’s for sure and I very seriously doubt that the timing wasn’t considered or discussed before the decision was made. If they waited til after the holidays would it have bankrupted them?

  58. Comment by Hotspur on November 28, 2018 11:29 am

If by European nature you mean high performance high fuel economy small engines in a stable suspension system that corners like it is on rails, and high visibility all around the interior, I’ve never understood why Detroit can’t achieve that.

  59. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 28, 2018 11:31 am

GM changed nothing in ’09 other than hiring younger UAW guys at about half the old starting wage (a concession from the organized criminal outfit in a conspiracy of older workers against younger ones). They didn’t have to, they got the cash infusion they wanted and got to screw over their bondholders, and the people who could took their pensions and severance packages and ran.

  60. Comment by Colorado Alex In Exile on November 28, 2018 11:33 am

Do you really think soibois care about all of that? No, the customers are going to be largely the kind of assholes who dream of living in Brooklyn but can’t afford it, so they buy an overpriced apartment somewhere in the downtown of a midwest city and try to make it a second-rate Portland.

  61. Comment by Hotspur on November 28, 2018 11:36 am

They definitely screwed over the bondholders and shareholders to bail out the unions. And loads of taxpayers said they would never buy another GM or Chrysler product.

The UAW got bailed out in ’09 by the taxpayers. Who is going to bail them out this time?

  64. Comment by leoncaruthers on November 28, 2018 11:55 am

I desperately want to see CAFE die. We’d be so much better off. The Japanese and Koreans can fight over the sedan market and Ford can just make trucks, might even be able to bring the price down.

GM can die in a fire.

  65. Comment by Car in on November 28, 2018 11:58 am

I just want Pat to buy another Insight before Honda starts making us pay market price (right now, they practically give them away so that the fuel efficient cars get the proper “market share”). Pat’s old one is around 350,000 miles. With nothing major done to it at all. /knocks on wood.

  67. Comment by MJ on November 28, 2018 12:04 pm

Laying off people isn’t inherently bad, especially when you’re killing production of a car that no one wants.

After the announcement the stock price went up 10%.

  68. Comment by jam2 on November 28, 2018 12:05 pm

the gm et al bailout was a massive breach of contract perpetrated by a criminal government through implicit force of arms.

if a private company had done such a thing the management team would be in prison.

we have no free market; it follows that we therefore have no choice.

Following this path leads us to no gm / chrysler / ford minis.

GM has a 5 year plan that is going to be implemented, no matter what.

I see why people care but I also can’t see why anyone has an attachment to a car company that can’t get its shit together. We continually bail them out and they continually produce terrible cars.

  88. Comment by MJ on November 28, 2018 2:07 pm

Correct. They are shutting down the Volt and Cruze plants. Although they are unallocated, which simply means they have no planned replacements after production ceases.

  89. Comment by Brother Cavil on November 28, 2018 2:12 pm

I would have gotten another if it hadn’t been phased out; instead, I admit my heart was set on someday getting an Impala.

    Thus do all things pass.

So we’re going to get the stuttering botox shit for brains for speaker of the house again. How the hell does she pull that off?

Even all of my liberal friends think she’s an asshat.

    Interesting DoD contract from yesterday.
    They buy some nice toys…

“Barrett Firearms Mfg. Inc., Christiana, Tennessee, was awarded a $7,952,249 firm-fixed-price contract for the procurement of M107, Caliber .50 Long Range Sniper Rifle systems with scope, suppressor and spare kits, M82A1M Caliber .50 Rifle and M107A1. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Nov. 26, 2023. U.S. Army Contracting Command, New Jersey, is the contracting activity (W15QKN-19-D-0009).”

Hopefully those .50 cal Barrett rifles will only go to the Army and our trusted allies and not the Postal Service or HUD.

I think it’s great news, Hot’n’Tot. She’s the gift that keeps on giving for our side!
It’s not like she’ll get sane as time passes. Just imagine the gems we’ll be able to mine over the next few years.

Unless the GOPe goes along (and we know how that goes), she ain’t gettin’ squat done. May God starch the Senate’s spines.

2020’s going to be real interesting. And by “interesting” I mean “hope your bug-out bags are good”.

It’s fine, the Singularity comes in 2029 and an uploaded Elon Musk will conquer Mars the following year, and we can all go join him in Martian cyber-heaven.

We’ll be stuck in a war between Elon Musk’s army of AI droids and Jeff Bezos’ sentient computer system.

Hotspur, I can’t believe I’m saying this but the republican legislature in Michigan seem pretty smart.

Plus the media lies about minimum wage as it applies to tipped employees. They always report that the minimum hourly wage for tipped employees is lower than the normal minimum wage.

What they don’t report is that if the combination of wages and tips doesn’t bring the employee’s wage to the higher minimum, the employer has to increase the wages so that they do.

  124. Comment by Jimbro on November 28, 2018 7:31 pm

As I read that article my primary thought was that this is the kind of shit they usually pull on the Republicans
