MMM 343: Amanita Muscaria

Believe it or not, this species is at the top of image lists when you search “Fall Mushrooms”, and not without reason.  In the regions where they can be found, this is their time to fruit out, usually near pines other conifers.

1200px-Amanita-muscaria-fliegenpilz-b.jpg

Distinct and iconic in color, shape, and those spots that made them the choice of iconic mushroom to be included in Super Mario Brothers.

First-Mushroom-SMB2-1-1.jpg

Although a “poisonous” and “psychedelic” species, cooking them destroys both properties, and they are a traditional component of Siberian cuisine.

1200px-Fly_Agaric_(Amanita_muscaria)_3.JPG

There are, of course, also traditional methods for knocking out the poison and keeping the trippyness, but those are either disgusting (someone or some animal takes the hit with eating it raw, then the subsequent urine is consumed) or involved and somewhat haphazard in efficacy (it can be fermented into a “wine” that’s still fairly unpleasant and can be both purgative and an emetic).

2006-10-25_Amanita_muscaria_crop.jpg

Because of the difficulty in use for flights of fancy, they aren’t terribly popular for such things, even though they remain legal to own and consume in much of the developed world.

Amanita muscaria fly agaric (1).JPG

They are really quite pretty, if a bit alien and spooky looking (just me?).  They are a gilled, concave mushroom with a separated veil on the stalk, and a white spore print, with a distinctive spot pattern on the cap.

muscariagrowing.jpg

I don’t recommend consumption, but at least they aren’t something you’d accidentally eat or mistake for a lookalike choice edible.

Have a great week, everyone.

    Good one.

You all know how much I despise, hate, detest, loath and kind of don’t like hijabs.

  29. My priorities may be way off. I just researched tree frog hibernation for the green tree frog that seems to be hibernating near the light outside my apartment door. Almost tempting to get a terrarium and be done with it.

    Nailed it, MJ.

  42. “Religion of Peace” is from that jackass, Bush.

  43. Here’s my theory:

Most older trans people only do so after they a) have enough money b) their parents have died.

Very few people are fooled. Especially in person. Its just not easy to turn around a few hundred thousand years of evolutionary biology.

Most of the younger trans people are trend surfing.

  44. reddit/transpassing

It’s full of people trying to gauge if they can pass. It’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen.

  45. The trans movement killed emo. These are all the kids who just didn’t fit in anywhere moved to something new.

  46. The Bush family is such a disappointing group of sly, globalists. They make me sick. Even Barbara Bush who people love, I never have, I don’t like that she never came out against abortion and in fact was a supporter.

    FU fatso.

  47. What is transpassing?

I know it’s a mental illness, but what are the symptoms?

  48. The trans movement killed emo. These are all the kids who just didn’t fit in anywhere moved to something new.

I saw that comment recently. Cutting was better than this. Scars on your arms and legs are something you can overcome later in life when you get “adjusted”. Breaking the hormonal chain of your puberty and mutilating your genitalia is not.

  49. And I also don’t like the cutesy pictures of the Bush family all lovey dovey with the Obama’s. Yeah, they just wanted to “fundamentally transform” America. FU Bush family. You sucked off our teat enough.

I see that I’ve been triggered.

    HA!

  50. What is transpassing?

Reddit community where people post pictures and ask if they look like their “gender” of choice.

    Spoiler: no

    They’ve started spamming /r/fitgirls too.

    Spoiler: they don’t pass either.

  51. Transpassing is where mostly teens who are either transitioning or want to, get anonymous opinions online to see if they can pass for the opposite sex.

It’s pretty rough. Most look like boys/men in bad wigs and the girls trying to pass generally just look like girls with short hair.

  52. On the plus side, it is removing some of the crazy from the gene pool.

  53. I’m going to start covering myself in mayo and demand that everyone identifies me as a ham sandwich.

  54. On the plus side, it is removing some of the crazy from the gene pool.
    ———————————
A lot of older people transitioning have families.

This is my shocked ham sandwich.

  55. A lot of older people transitioning have families.

This is my shocked ham sandwich.

IMHO, that is the most horrific part: telling their kids, “I’m no longer your father, I’m now your mother.”

  56. Expecting your wife to support you and pretend that she’s a lesbian (most of the f-m trannies are lesbians looking to hook up with women).

  57. It’s all madness and tragedy. The madness is environmentally induced, not genetic (though I suppose there may be some predisposition), or it wouldn’t suddenly be ‘trans’ instead of cutting. These people need help, not hormones and mutilating surgery.

  58. It’s an expression of an underlying problem.

  59. Ennui, I suspect.

  60. In the case of my co-worker’s daughter, it was attention-mongering. When her parents started talking divorce, she decided she was a lesbian, and when that wasn’t enough, now she’s their “son”. I still think the doc should be sued for malpractice. He did the surgery 3 or 4 months after she decided she needed to be a man, because they weren’t sure Obamacare wasn’t going to be overturned, and they wanted the insurance to pay for it. It should have never been covered in the first place.

  61. I’m bored and trolling libs on Twitter. Not enjoyable. Time to get moving.

  62. but it’s the republicans fault for eliminating mental health care for the totally normal trans movement

  63. Media and schools. Those are the places it comes from. Clean this out and things start straightening out within a generation.

  64. Okay, there is a pretty Dem woman, Mallory Hagan running for Congress here in AL, but she is dumb dumb dumb. Carpetbagger. Anti-gun. Caught on video playing with her phone during a radio interview.

  65. It should have never been covered in the first place.

A lot of insurance won’t cover bariatric elective surgery because it has a 1-2% mortality rate from complications and the general ill health of those who seek it.

40% of people who get gender “reassignment” die by suicide later. Seems like it should have the same level of insurance help.

  66. Ennui, I suspect.

I think what happens is that there’s something going on in their life that they feel like the can’t cope with, so they try to escape by hiding behind this other person that they want to become.

Apparently Alec Baldwin is in trouble for his discussion of Bruce Jenner on Baldwin’s talk show. Baldwin was interviewing Kim Kardashian and she mentioned walking in on Jenner in women’s clothing when she was 25. He convinced her not to tell her mom.

Bruce Jenner was a washed up track star married to a domineering and manipulative woman.
Bradley Manning was an effeminate kid who didn’t fit in anywhere.
    Ditto Brianna Wu.

  67. Killed it.

  68. Yeah, most interesting thing I had was hibernating frogs, got nothin’.

  69. Was reading about aether while listening to a podcast about Vigano’s response to Francis and Ouellet regarding McCarrick, occasionally moving forward with my project to pull ipfix data into Apache Drill.

Was the aether stuff from Insty’s link the other day?

  75. Wikipedia is in on the scam of him being a she. Encyclopedia Dramatica is sketchy on some things but has the full sordid story of this asshole’s ‘career’.

I’ve learned that everything is a list in sharepoint

That no one can find, because it’s in f*cking sharepoint.

  76. Yes, Alex. I share the prediction that we’ll probably find aether eventually. Something has to account for epsilon-naught and mu-naught.

Also, I suspect much of 21st century science will be refuting the errors of the 19th and 20th centuries.

  77. Early Medicine: “You have an inbalance of humors.”
20th Century Medicine: “HA! That’s absurd. Medicine is much more complicated than that.”
21st Century Medicine: “You have a hormonal imbalance…”

  78. Dude. There was a great show that followed 4 people that were either transitioning or thinking about it.

It was called Lost in Transition.

One was so clearly mentally ill that it was hard to watch. He showered with his clothes on. Made his kids and everyone in their lives go along with the transition.

One was so obviously a cross dresser but he didn’t know what to do. Just tragic. He looked like General Mattis in drag. I believe the couple ended up breaking up cuz she didn’t want to be a lesbian.

  79. I’ve learned that everything is a list in sharepoint

That no one can find, because it’s in f*cking sharepoint.

Eventually the entire government will run off of a dozen massively complex, interconnected Excel spreadsheets.

  80. One was so obviously a cross dresser but he didn’t know what to do. Just tragic. He looked like General Mattis in drag. I believe the couple ended up breaking up cuz she didn’t want to be a lesbian.

I’m curious what the Church’s position is regarding your spouse undergoing such mutilation. Do they annul the marriage? Consider the spouse dead? Even if your husband changes his mind, once he’s had his cock removed, demanding that you stay married to him seems cruel.

  81. heh why should government be different than business

  82. Another young couple had a kid and another on the way. He decided to come out as trans and the wife dutifully played along.

He had a kid and one on the way and they were putting surgery and what not on credit cards which would invariably lead to the loss of their only outcome. He worked at a gun store. WTF is wrong with people?

The last couple ended up divorcing. Shattered the family, moved into a shitty apartment, cast out his wife into a life of question (she hadn’t worked in 20 years). Fuck her. Gotta live my dream. They had a daughter that was also trans-which is statistically impossible. Everyone lost. Everyone ended up worse so this middle aged fat guy could transition. He didn’t even dress like a woman. Just wore a wig and earrings and called himself a chick.

  83. A civil divorce and separation is not uncommonly recommended in cases of abuse. The question of annulment is a separate issue of validity and sacramental nature of the bond of marriage and the preparedness of the individuals who entered into that bond.

  84. And yes, given the very real physical danger that a woman near a madman of any stripe is in, I’d class that with ‘abuse’.

  85. I wouldn’t be caught dead at a Chiefs/Bengals game, let alone shave my balls for it.

  86. I caught one episode of that show MJ and I don’t see how anyone could have come away from seeing that and not knowing and admitting that these people were all mentally ill.

  89. In all honestly, I think they were the best they could find. They’d love to find some normal people who want to transition, but they don’t exist.

The kids are their best “get”. They could have been normal, but they had shitty parents who didn’t know how to deal with childish behavior.

A lot of lefty shows are like that.

I’m still surprised that Girls wasn’t some long con set up by James O’Keefe.

  91. I went to crossfit today, because I figured why not? I only kicked ass on my half -marathon yesterday, I may as well keep the WINNING going. I did take the workout 10 lighter than written, and it was hard, but I did pretty good considering.

I may hit the bike before work. I was supposed to be moved into fat loss today and it hasn’t happened, so I may as well.

And, no, I’m not an addict, but thanks for your concern.

I have never seen one episode of Girls.

    ——-
Based on what I’ve read, it’s porn with ugly people.

  102. The characters in porn are Mensa caliber by comparison to the pathetic caricatures in that show, from what I hear.

  103. From what I’ve seen and read of the show, it’s basically indistinguishable from a conservative parody of leftist millennials.

  104. *Pokes head in, sees mention of Tom in a sandwich, heads for door*

  105. They are desperately trying to make Beto a thing. He’s youngish and a leftist dolt, in other words, they are trying to produce another Obama.

God, please help me not hate stupid people.

  106. They need someone young and vibrant before 2020 or else it’s going to be another aging boomer running against Trump.

Obama left the party in shambles, with most of the younger Dems, who often won in purplish districts, voted out of office. The Dems who survived were the Old Guard in safe districts.

  107. A lot of insurance won’t cover bariatric elective surgery because it has a 1-2% mortality rate from complications and the general ill health of those who seek it.

I have a friend who is undergoing that surgery tomorrow. Can’t be talked out of it. I’ve read the horror stories, which is why I will never do it – it’s pretty much irreversible.

I’m just so worried about her, because she lives alone and is semi-retired. If something bad happens to her in the middle of the night, she has no one around who would know about it.

She needed someone to drive her to her surgery, so I offered to do it, but I am going to feel so guilty if things go south.

  108. Is “the sleeve” surgery any less dramatic?

  109. I admit, one of the things that finally spurred me to start trying to take better care of myself was the realization that now I’m by myself, if something happened to me, nobody would know until I missed work without word, missed my psych appointments, and stopped answering texts and calls. That could be a week or more, depending. There was a point earlier this year that it didn’t bother me…but not now.

Well, not for now, anyway. Hoping I can keep it that way. That’s a shitty way to live.

  110. It is, Cavil. ((((hugs))))

  111. O.o

  112. I’ve learned that everything is a list in sharepoint

I’ve been threatened with Sharepoint 2 times in three years at this company, and it always crashes and burns and we go back to folders on drives on servers.

  113. I don’t hold back in meetings anymore. People mention sharepoint and I ask them very seriously to tell me what made them think that was a good idea?

  114. I demand a wiki. At least that can be searched.

  115. I feel fortunate that I have no idea what a Sharepoint is other than something involving a computer program preparing ham sandwiches undergoing bariatric transition to a gender fluid Beto-bot running marathons while shitting their tights.

  116. THat’s pretty much sharepoint in a nutshell.

  117. I’ll confess that I’ve used SharePoint in the past when I was in the Army, because when properly used it made it easier to coordinate various staff sections and distribute documents such as Operations Orders. However, I’m probably not the best person to talk about it, because I’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that a) I’m apparently smarter than a lot of the people using it and b) I didn’t try to use it beyond what it was good for.

  118. Everybody must be out gang raping.

This is true. I’m a big meanie at work because if there’s anything that needs tracking and inspection by quality control, I get one of the contractors to go into Sharepoint and create the work order. I can update it just fine, but if I create one, it vanishes into the ether. Can’t use the old work order system that worked just fine, nooooooo, we were still getting work done, and we can’t have that.

  122. Today’s drama was that one of the engineers got busted for having porn on his computer. He protested that, no, he didn’t. Turned out that when he plugged his iPhone into his Mac to charge the phone, it synced up and copied the nude pictures of his wife (got any nekkid pictures of your wife? want some?) from the phone to the computer. So now the IT guys and his boss have seen these nudes. I haven’t met his wife, so no idea if that was a hardship or not.

  123. Keeping dirty pictures on your phone is stupid.

  124. Allowing anyone to take nude pictures of you is also stupid.

  125. Anyone who takes naked photos of his wife is nuts. Dude, you can’t wait a few hours to see that shit?

  126. Plugging your personal phone into your work computer isn’t so smart either.

  127. If they haven’t been emailed to all staff the IT department is a double failure.
