Music Poat

I know you’ll all ignore this anyway, but once I get it out of my system perhaps we’ll all feel better.

Let me introduce you to my new music crush.   They have the horrible name of “Highly Suspect”, but it’s a bit late to change that.   They were a hard working bar band, have been nominated for a Grammy (I think, too lazy to look it up), and been constantly touring for the last few years. They’re rock. They’re bluesy.   They jam.  And then there’s this …

The lead singer is SO attractive, one almost wants to dismiss them at first.  I mean, just LOOK at him:

ELVERTA, CA, 25 October 2015: Johnny Stevens, vocalist and guitar with Highly Suspect, performing at Aftershock 2015, near Sacramento, California.

But he’s actually an exceptional vocalist, and pretty good lead guitarist.

I heard about them through my QOTSA fan group – when they  were complaining that they sucked live.    Upon researching, I discovered that actually they DON’T suck live, but perhaps they’ve toured too much/partied too hard and lately haven’t been performing as well as they used to over the summer. Because I found some kick ass live videos.

This one is currently getting some airplay – and this is from a little venue called “The Machine Shop” right in Flint:

This is my favorite song- the video is kinda weird/creepy. Dude obviously likes that shirt.

You knew this was coming, right?  QOTSA released their new album last week.

Fans love it. Fans hate it. They sold out. It’s a masterpiece.   It’s all over the place.   Josh Homme said this was a dance album, and he wrote many of the songs for his kids. This song opens the album and it’s a dance-able ROMP:

This is my absolute favorite from the album. The last two minutes of this song are a masterpiece. I’m basically obsessed.

They’re just starting to work the new stuff into their concerts, and I don’t knw what the setlist is going to look like in October when I see them. I CAN’T WAIT. This was over the weekend:

Josh tore his meniscus a month or so back, and he looks like he’s not taking it easy on his knee. /WORRIES.

If you guys really want to hate something I like, I present this. Which I can pretty much guarantee that everyone here will make fun of. Whatever bitches.

Well, I think that’s enough for today, don’t you?

    Likey.

For an older group, y’all certainly have some weird playlists.
I still stick with Gov’t Mule, Steely Dan & early ZZ Top…

Who are you calling OLD Chi?

    In my head, I’m – like- 27.

Or pre-MTV Dire Straits, 80’s Joe Jackson, or almost anything you could call “Blues.”

Tex, I’m obsessed with that song. I think it’s the best track on the album. I can’t wait to hear it live.

I did not hate the performance of Lydia, however, the guy licking the guitar needs his face punched.

Mare – the singer guitarist apparently – for his first performance – was supposed to just play him and his guitar. As the day got closer, he got nervous and decided he wanted his bests friends there with him. Enter the drummer and bass player – twin brothers. Ever since they’ve been a band.

There’s a recipe for chocolate coconut-flour bread on the King Arthur coconut flour that I can now highly recommend. I subbed out the sugar for Swerve at a 1-1 and added sugar-free chocolate chips and it’s excellent with coffee.

  44. Comment by leoncaruthers on August 31, 2017 10:28 am

I take that back, the Swerve is half what the sugar would have been. I forgot that I doubled the rest of the recipe so I could burn through a dozen eggs.

  75. Comment by lauraw on August 31, 2017 2:56 pm

Clay soil is wonderful. All you have to do is layer in lots of organic materials, make raised beds, and in a few months you have the best soil for growing everything. Don’t need timbers to contain the raised beds, either. Clay stays put as long as you keep it well mulched.

I hate digging new beds because it’s so hard and heavy, but when I keep the beds protected with organic materials, the soil is awesome. Way better than the sandy stuff I used to grow in before.

I still want to build a clay oven. All I have to do is start digging. Where it is unimproved, the soil is pretty much the perfect red clay and sand/silt mix.

    One of these days…

  76. Comment by Chi on August 31, 2017 3:18 pm

I can dig a hole anywhere on my little acre and find pure clay less than a foot down. But it’s the grey kind, not the red stuff that’s a few hours West of me. Perfect modeling clay.

Weird, because a few miles east, everything is sand under the topsoil.

My main garden is an absolute disaster. No time for weeding this year, ergo most of the larger tomatoes are rotting on the vines, almost all of the peppers and alliums got choked out by grass. Turnips and strawberries and pumpkins are okay. I might get up early Saturday and rip everything else out and fees it to the birds.

Well, when they start excavating your new pond hole, maybe ask them to scrape off the topsoil and save it for you in a separate pile.

Man, how do you know when your Jarrahdales are ready to take in for curing? I have a few that are large, ribbed (SYWM), and hubbard blue. The oldest one started rotting on me. 😦

  94. Comment by leoncaruthers on August 31, 2017 7:09 pm

If they are blue you can cut them off the vine and start curing them.

  95. Comment by leoncaruthers on August 31, 2017 7:15 pm

I have 2 I should probably start curing, but haven’t had any rot yet. This year’s tree pumpkin is about 5 pounds and still hanging steady at 12′ up.

  96. Comment by lauraw on August 31, 2017 7:32 pm

My one jarrahdale ‘climber’ fell and broke off at the stem. I’ll be pickling the immature flesh in a few days.

This was my cue to go out there and tie up the other climbing squashes (not Jarrahdales) to make sure they don’t break off.

Never have had a butternut or a tromboncino fall off the fence. Their tendrils are thicker and the fruits are lighter.

This is supposed to be CMN fundraising month. Already replaced with Red Cross. WalMart has pledged up to 20 million already. Trucks were ready to roll with water, diapers, wipes, etc.

  119. Comment by osoloco11 on August 31, 2017 10:55 pm

I don’t Red Cross or CMN.

  120. Comment by osoloco11 on August 31, 2017 10:56 pm

Children’s Miracle Network. Money stays local. Local hospital buys organs from PP.

  121. Comment by Hotspur on August 31, 2017 10:58 pm

Fuck the Red Cross. I wouldn’t donate my used toilet paper to them.

    Oh, actually, I would.

Not sure I’ve ever given to CMN. I gave to Samaritan’s Purse for Houston. Figure I’ll get hit up by the church next.

Red Cross has a bad rep after the floods in Louisiana last year (throwing away donated food) and the 6 houses in Haiti.

Chrispy, yes, the bad weather was supposed to be here earlier, so they cancelled all the after-school activities. It’s rumbly out there, but I don’t hear the tornado sirens (yet).

QT post. Dan was referred to a urologist. Earliest appt is November. I rain manned a friend that works for a urologist. Same guy!!! She’s going to see about moving his appt up. 🙏🏻 Dan: don’t say anything to anybody. One of his dad’s cancers was prostate. I have to keep everything off social media. 😂😂😂

  124. Comment by Hotspur on August 31, 2017 11:06 pm

    Social media is bullshit.

  125. Comment by xbradtc (@xbradtc) on August 31, 2017 11:10 pm

Don’t forget, when you *donate* blood to the Red Cross, they *sell* it to a hospital.

  126. Comment by Chi on August 31, 2017 11:22 pm

Haven’t donated to red Cross since I heard about their shenanigans after 9/11. Screw them.

  127. Comment by Pupster on August 31, 2017 11:34 pm

You know what is a good preventative of prostate problems?

One of the things I detest about ACA is the total dismissal of pre-existing conditions. We paid for insurance way before we needed to. Dan’s family is cancer fucked. His dad survived 5 cancers before esophageal cancer killed him. His mom survived several cancers, but it looks like Alzheimers will take her. Dan explains his cancer history and crickets. Starts showing symptoms and the earliest appt he can get is NOV. Turns out, I have a RL friend that works for the Nov referral doc. She is working on getting Dan in as soon as possible. Dan wants me to keep it on the DL. NO PRAYERS!!! Fuck that shit, I love you guys. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

What are the chances that I know the receptionist for the urologist that Dan was referred to?

“Architects are mostly women or fags.”

    can’t they be both?

“What are the chances that I know the receptionist for the urologist that Dan was referred to?”

maybe she knows kool and the gang…

  135. Comment by osoloco11 on September 1, 2017 12:15 am

She used to work for a surgical oncologist. Got too depressed by all the breast cancer. Takes a job with an urologist. She may be able to get Dan in soon.

  136. Comment by osoloco11 on September 1, 2017 12:21 am

Dan is upset with me for being able to translate his referral into English. He wanted to keep it on the DL. I had to Greeksplain

  137. Comment by Chi on September 1, 2017 12:22 am

I don’t exactly have a lot of pull with The Man Upstairs, oso, but I’ll say a prayer for Dan anyway.
    If you don’t tell him I won’t.

  138. Comment by osoloco11 on September 1, 2017 12:28 am

Thanks. He is too private. I ruin his privacy all the time.

Every street is dark and folding
    Out mysteriously
Where lies the chance we take
To be always working, reaching out for
A derp that we can’t see
    Everybody’s gotta hold on hope
It’s the last thing that’s holding me

    Hoping it’s just BPH Oso.
