ngày thứ năm (瞻禮五)

Here we are, Thursday again. Is Thursday the most boring day of the week or is it one of the other ones? Tuesday? Really, no one cares, time to shut my pie hole. Let’s begin with a fine performance from a band I’ve had the fortune to see twice in my life. Once at UAB where I got stood up by a southern belle when I was doing a one month rotation there and the other time at a place in Worcester called the Memorial Auditorium with my brother who did not leave me wondering where the hell he was since we walked there together.

Oh Yeaahh! Koolaid’s here!

I wonder how the squatty potty trial is going. And should it really be called a “trial”? Is there a money back guarantee? Who among us would take the shipping and receiving job at Squatty Potty, Inc. ?

I think I know where MJ‘s been. He has dropped a lot of hints.

The recent news story about the number of young people living with their parents reaching the highest number in 130 years ( http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/05/24/479327382/for-first-time-in-130-years-more-young-adults-live-with-parents-than-partners ) tells you a lot about the Obama economy. It reminded me of this guy although I’m sure the yoots living at home in their parents basements would deny they were unmotivated.

Let’s give Thursday a boot in the ass and move on to Friday of a 3 day weekend, the unofficial kick off to summer.

But he does love big breasted women who are stupid and think he’s awesome. So he’s got that going for him.

Good luck with adopting Charlie VMax. He sounds like a good boy even if it was the scent of bacon that drew him to you.

After dropping off the boy I’m making a Sam’s run and will look for Meathead’s book. Thanks to Oso for reminding me they carry it there.

I went from Trump-curious to all in for Cruz to grudging acceptance of Trump. Then the riots at Trump events and the attacks on Milo and fanned the begrudging embers of enthusiasm into a raging bonfire.

If DJT picks Allen West for VP or SecDef, I’m getting a bumper sticker and sending money.

  12. Comment by leoncaruthers on May 26, 2016 8:56 am

Or John Bolton’s Mustache for basically anything.

  13. Comment by Car in on May 26, 2016 8:56 am

Someone asked me who Trump could pick and Allen West was the only one I could think of (I guess he’s said he’s picking a military guy? I dunno, I’m not paying attention – still in denial phase of grief).

If he picks West, I will put a WEST sticker on my car. That’s as far as my support can go I’m rather sure.

  14. Comment by xbradtc (@xbradtc) on May 26, 2016 9:12 am

I’m not terribly impressed by Allen West. I’ve known a shitload of LTCs, and can think of quite a few that impress me more.

  15. Comment by Car in on May 26, 2016 9:14 am

Yea, well sure xbrad. But the open field of every LTC isn’t exactly what we’re working with.

One of my girlfriends swears by turmeric drinks to help reduce her joint inflammation. Supposed to be good for skin and sleep, too. I just made a batch of coconut-milk ‘Golden milk’ for breakfast. Delicious. Like chai. Going to see how I feel after a week or two of daily use.

Scott is taking me out to work with him today in 90 degree heat. Ugh. Hope it’s not a twisty staircase like yesterday.

Jimbro, I love Meathead’s ‘Memphis Dust’ recipe- without the sugars added. I make it with just the spices. Made chicken with it last night, and it is sooo good.

I like his ‘Big Bad Beef’ rub sprinkled on veggies and eggs, too. ‘Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow Crust’ is also awesome as a beef rub, but I haven’t compared it to Big Bad. One of these days I’ll do side-by-side comparison.

I want them to think this motherfucker will not play nice in the face of nonsense.

A far-left friend posted on FB asking for someone to explain why Trump was getting support.

    I wrote:

“In short, because we have a truly awful political class. On the right, there are a lot of people who are pissed at the Republican leadership and view them as either gutless or incompetent at achieving their promises to the base. Instead their goal seems to be furthering the desires of their donor (read, Chamber of Commerce) class. Immigration was the last straw, but it wasn’t the only one. There has been a lot of anger and resentment simmering for a while now. The GOP leadership wants amnesty and open borders because the donor class want cheap labor. They tried to foist an amnesty candidate on us, first Jeb, then Marco Rubio, and then Kasich, rather than accept that amnesty was a dead issue and rally behind a compromise candidate that everyone could support. Marco Rubio was never going to win the nomination, and everyone knew it. But he insisted on staying in past Super Tuesday. As a result, he cost Ted Cruz a majority in Texas, and probably two other states at least. Same thing with Kasich. If both men had dropped out earlier, then Cruz would be the nominee.

It also helped Trump that the Democratic party has given up on lower-middle class whites. The left has become increasingly the party of special interest groups (LGBT, racial minorities, environmentalists, etc) as well as young urban liberals from the upper-middle and upper classes. Increased immigration and amnesty was a way for Hispanic-activists to increase their influence, to add millions of new voters to the census rolls in largely urban (blue) environments, and to provide cheap services (both Hispanic for lower-end, but also east Asian programmers for the tech oligarchs). The result is that blue-collar whites, who have seen their schools fill up with kids who can’t speak English, who read about increasing violence on the border, and who hear horror stories of crimes committed by illegal aliens who are often released back into the States, have flocked to the one guy willing to promise an end to it.

Now that Trump is the nominee, he’s helped by the fact that the left seems to be coming unhinged. The increasingly violent anti-Trump protests may scare a few Trump supporters into staying home, but they also scare undecideds away from supporting Hillary. The 1968 DNC Riots hurt the party, because it gave voters the impression that the party was controlled by violent lunatics. They voted instead for Nixon, who promised Law and Order and stability.

Finally, there’s the fact that Trump’s opponent is Hillary. Trump may be a buffoon, but the Clintons have turned sleaze and corruption into an art form. A lot of Republicans and conservatives, myself included, would crawl naked over broken glass to keep those two and their sycophants away from the levers of power. And Trump so far has been willing to throw punches and get into the mud going against Hillary. He’s attacked her over the Clinton Foundation’s shady practices, as well as her role in protecting her husband against all the women that accused him. He’s the first Republican candidate in a long time who wasn’t willing to take the high road right off the electoral cliff.”

I’ve already been called a racist at least twice by other commenters, but even my friend had to grudgingly concede that the violence of the anti-Trump protesters didn’t look good.

Alright, I’ve gotta do the grocery shopping now. I delayed it to let Paula sleep longer before I get home and set the dogs to barking. There’s a limit to my niceness and, besides, she’s exhausted enough to roll right back over and fall asleep again.

She is in love with the idea of working overnight since it’s a lot more mellow and a lot of her friends work nights. She forgets that the dogs and boys are needy and she doesn’t get the sleep she needs to function. Thankfully she didn’t sign up for any more nights after tonight.

Leon, I hate to say this, but I’m going to need your advice.

Are you sitting down or have you collapsed?

  42. Comment by leoncaruthers on May 26, 2016 10:53 am

    Sitting. Go.

  43. Comment by MJ on May 26, 2016 10:58 am

Do you have a plan or schedule for lifting? I’m finally at the point where I’m almost all healed up and I need to gain some strength.

And none of that, wear a weighted vest and chop wood bullshit. I live in the city and belong to the Y. You know the Y, it’s where I have dinner with your mom.

  44. Comment by leoncaruthers on May 26, 2016 11:05 am

You’re going to see the most consistent increases in strength if you have a plan and stick to it. I always have at least a notional plan when I’m in the gym regularly. Starting Strength is a good one after a long layoff or if you’ve never lifted, but that’s a specific program of exercises and planned increases in weight after establishing a baseline.

What are you planning to do and what equipment do you have? Are there specific athletic efforts you want to improve at?

  45. Comment by Hotspur on May 26, 2016 11:05 am

Leon gives his best advice when he’s sitting down.

  46. Comment by Hotspur on May 26, 2016 11:07 am

I want to improve at lifting your mom.

  47. Comment by leoncaruthers on May 26, 2016 11:08 am

I’m a fan of free weights and barbells in particular, but the Y may not have that. At a bare minimum, you should be walking into the gym with some sort of planned exercises for the day and a way to record any deviations from that plan or specific weights/times/other metrics if you had only notional ideas before you went. You can’t improve what you don’t measure, and records are all you’ll have after a while.

  48. Comment by MJ on May 26, 2016 11:08 am

At home we have TRX and some light barbells.

At the Y, free weights, machines, etc. Most of what you’d expect at any decent gym.

More than anything I need to build strength around my shoulders and chest. I can’t go through this bullshit where my arm won’t work for 6 months.

  49. Comment by leoncaruthers on May 26, 2016 11:11 am

So you need a program, then, and some specific emphasis on strengthening the shoulder girdle and rotator cuff. Are you still doing spinning classes or a lot of leg work elsewhere?

  50. Comment by Jay in Ames on May 26, 2016 11:14 am

Don’t you have any rubber bands? Start with the purple ones.

  51. Comment by MJ on May 26, 2016 11:17 am

I’m swimming and doing spin, but probably 2-3 times a week at most.

  52. Comment by leoncaruthers on May 26, 2016 11:39 am

Swimming should be good for the shoulder, and biking should be plenty for your quads. If you feel like you need specific leg work I’d add deadlifts first, squats second, if only because deads are going to be an efficient way to also strengthen lower back, core, and shoulder girdle.

I’d avoid bench press or at least be very careful with it, along with anything that involves an internal rotation of the shoulder. Benching your way to a rotator cuff issue is extremely common. I’d go with pushup variations instead (or the TRX/rings), and use dumbbells or the pec deck to do chest flyes. I’d also do pullups/chinups if you can without pain, very good for shoulder strength, though mostly the posterior head of the deltoid. For the lateral head, I’d do lateral raises while leaning slightly forward and being careful to NOT internally rotate the shoulder at the apex of the movement. You’ll also want to be very careful with overhead pressing movements, and you might want to do those only with dumbbells, and go as light as you need to. Anything that forces the injured shoulder into a painful angle to keep up with the uninjured one can hurt it again.

Hop on youtube and look up “athlean-X shoulder” and you’ll get a lot of good suggestions from Jeff Cavaliere on training shoulders without hurting them.

Mini-me’s high school is keeping the same softball coach. I think they won 2 games all season, and one was a forfeit. The rest were usually mercy rule losses. All the seniors will be leaving, the lone junior is dropping off the team to focus on her AP classes, and none of the freshmen got much playing time, so they aren’t motivated to come back. Looks like four sophomores for a team. Way to go!
