HHD – Academy Award edition

I guess that last poat wasn’t the last poat from me after all.  Thank you to all who emailed me in the past week and helped clear things up for me.  I’m going to be over in the corner eating my words while y’all enjoy an old school HHD.

The Academy Awards are this weekend, and while most years, I don’t care about them, this year I do.  I’m hoping that “The King’s Speech” will win.  It was nice to see a good film with no reliance on special effects to tell the story, not a retread of a TV show or remake of a classic movie.  So for this week’s HHD, I hope you enjoy some Academy Award winners back when it really meant something.

First, we have Best Original Music from 1966,  “Doctor Zhivago”.  (Shush, it beats “Titanic”.)

Good luck, Colin Firth, hope you win Best Actor.

Oh yeah, and nice nips.

Clark Gable won an Oscar not for “Gone with the Wind” but for “It Happened One Night” in 1934.  (Good movie, screwball comedy type)

Gary Cooper won two Best Actor Oscars for “Sergeant York” and “High Noon”.

Gregory Peck won for “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

Burt Lancaster won for “Elmer Gantry”.

And last but not least, Charlton Heston won for “Ben Hur”.

Thank you for your attention, and y’all have a good day.

I watched “From Here to Eternity” the other day, which got me thinking about this. Burt Lancaster was hawt.

I read a quote not too long ago where Obama was hanging high prices at the gas pump on President Bush as proof of him being an utter failure (go figure) So I started looking for it online today, can’t find it anywhere. Did the interwebs get scrubbed?

I remember reading years ago an article about who actresses back in the day thought of as the best kisser.

Burt Lancaster won it running away – ALL of the actresses who had on-screen kisses with him just raved about what a great kisser he was….

Glad to see you back, roamie.

Just a quick comment before I head out for the day (Yeah, part-time job!!!), it seems that there may still be a glimmer of hope for CT after all. We just elected a Republican State Senator in a traditionally Democrat district (well, that would pretty much describe the entire state, now wouldn’t it?) in a special election to fill the seat of yet another corrupt Dem who finally, after 5 terms and repeated federal investigations and indictments, recently stepped down.

Honestly, I shocked by this. Of course, the newspaper puts it all into the proper perspective for, bless their ink-stained little hearts:

“Low Turnout May Have Hurt Dem.”

I guess that’s what happens when those who suck off the teat of government are too freaking lazy to know what’s happening in their own town. Damn shame, that.

TIfw – are the sumpoats lost and gone forever? Or will you be getting back to what we pay you to do anytime soon?

Stuff around the TiFW household is starting to get hectic – DD#3 is getting ready to graduate and go off to college, so there’s a LOT to do before she leaves. And yeah, it kinda has to start now, because she’s the one with ADD, and I swear we’re gonna find Jimmy Hoffa under the piles of stuff in her room. Plus, DD#2 will be home for the summer, so we need to get as much done now as we possibly can.

And for some reason, my MG is being wonky – I was only diagnosed a year ago, so I’m still not sure what “normal” is going to be – my eyes start doing weird things if I read for long stretches at a time; my field of vision starts to bounce up and down. I haven’t had any double vision yet, so I guess that’s a good thing….

J’ames, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation, several jets have been given paint jobs from the past. The star on the EA-6B is from the very first days of WWII. By the time of Midway, the Navy decided having big circles of red might not be the best idea…

  74. Comment by Jay in Ames on February 23, 2011 1:44 pm

Very cool, I did not know that. My dad will love that. He hasn’t flown since Vietnam, but he gets Aviation Week and always has cool stuff to point out.

Then again, he’ll probably just reply “it’s old”.

Of course, you would have to censor the guy, when he discovered the problem of getting back on the ship.

I’m sure that same commentary runs through the mind of any current Naval Aviator, when doing a night carrier landing.

One of my favorite one-frame cartoons shows a mom looking over her sleeping children and commenting to her husband, “If only I could think of them as sleeping, instead of recharging…..”

Which is why, as adorable as Herr’s bambino is, he will NOT have to worry about a visit from TiFW – I’m holding out for grandchildren. You know, the kind you can fill up with candy and soda, shake up a few times, then send home with mom and dad.

Heh. One of my BFFs makes pumpkin cheesecake. She knows I can’t stand cream cheese, so she doesn’t expect me to eat any, but I always tell her that I’m sure it is totally awesome if you do like cream cheese (it’s very popular with her friends and coworkers). Similarly, I’m sure Nina’s cake was awesome…if you like milk!

I figured I would mostly raid my sister’s stash. I’m set on breast pump, baby bottles, diaper bag, etc. And if it’s a boy, I’m definitely set on clothes because she has two boys, plus one of my coworkers has a boy and already told me she would be happy to give me his outgrown stuff.

However, I will require a Star Trek onesie. Or possibly more than one. BET ON IT.

    Not the red one.

I was behind a new mommy at the grocery store in the checkout line, her little fella had a nice hoodie that zipped up the back. It’s a really great idea, because the zipper in front irritates little chubby chins, and it’s a lot easier to put a coat on the little ones when you don’t have to deal with the flailing arms.

    Hi Vmax!

Why on God’s green earth would you think that two people who hate milk would like a cake called “three milks”???

Maybe she was trying to trick you into liking it and then do the big reveal.

A friend of a friend tried to do that to me — she knew I did not get on the tofu bandwagon and served a dish that supposedly had meat in but instead was tofu.

Her: “Hahaha, it’s tofu and you liked it!”

Me: (thinking) “That’s cause I lied to you, bitch — it sucks!”

  245. Comment by roamingfirehydrant on February 23, 2011 8:27 pm

My ex-mom-in-law and her daughter would do that with mushrooms in various dishes.

Ima gonna say a good thing about Dave in Texas, and his Dad. Once.

Imagine this situation — you are in a parking lot and you made the mistake of hitting on a chick who happened to be the girlfriend of a Lebanese guy who has some friends with him, who are all threatening to kick your ass.

So, you are thinking, do I want to start this fight? The critical factor here is — does anybody have my back?

If Dave were there, you could count on Dave to cover your back.

    Brew,
I’m getting re-call notices for my third colonoscopy now. I don’t wanna! Listening to the scanner in the morning, I’ve heard more than a few calls for; “Delta response. Bowel perforation. Dicestive Health Specialists”.(The facility where I had my first two.)
I’m not really ‘up for’ a bowel perforation, IYKWIMAITYD.
The last time they were in there they found 13 polyps and retrieved 12(dropped one)! All benign. I really hate the whole “Colon Blow” routine before-hand, though. It’s ‘the shits'(see what I did there?).
Anita don’t much like it ’cause they won’t let her stay in there and watch the camera, like they did with the endoscopy.
I’m probably gonna have to do it though.
    Sigh…

“The government of Col. Moammar Gadhafi hasn’t destroyed significant stockpiles of mustard gas and other chemical-weapons agents, raising fears in Washington about what could happen to them—and whether they may be used—as Libya slides further into chaos.”

I guess they’ll be blaming Bush for not taking Gadhafi out when he should have, huh?

Number of questions: 100 for each exam

Yes! It would go off twice, but not when the cycle ended, just as sort of warning buzzers. If I was on the phone the conversation would have to halt till the looooong buzzer stopped.

You must have a newer dryer that buzzes till you retrieve the clothes. NANNY STATE DRYER!!!
