  18. Good Morning Hotpockets!

I have been doing a little investigating on left wing sites. The ACORN story, by and large, does not exist there.

In the few places it does exist, it is pointed out that ACORN workers are saints who serve the most marginal members of society, ‘untouchables’ if you will, who Rethuglikans would like to take out behind the shed and shoot in the head because they hates poor folkses so much.

Nobody seems to give a shit or know about the child-prostitute angle over there. They didn’t actually watch the video to see what happened.

My take-away is that Republicans expect even ‘marginal’ characters to operate within the bounds of human decency, which is RACIST.

Lauraw~ I had an argument with an old friend last night that stemmed from me saying that Michael Moore is an idiot and then he went onto to say so is Hannity, Limbaugh, and Beck. That somehow morphed into the ACORN situation and he wasn’t able to speak on it and it is b/c the liberal media/news he watches isn’t covering it. This whole situation is NOT newsworthy to them and so the word isn’t getting out there. I was shocked at his lack of knowledge and he had the audacity to call me ill informed!

Of course, that this is our responsibility as individual humans. Most plans by GOVERNMENT to do that are hideous failures that in the end help no one and end up promoting mass dependency.

Using someone’s attempt at poetry to mock and ridicule them is idiotic in the extreme. Nearly all poetry is mindless, indulgant, pseudo-intellectual drivel, regardless of who writes it. Using someone’s poetry as an avenue of ridcule and attack is like laughing at them becuase of the size of their feet. Says more about the ridiculer than the ridiculee.

  59. and end up promoting mass dependency.

And I would explain to your friend that there really are very few people that CANNOT help themselves. And we already do take care of them. The people he has been duped into caring about are the people who CAN, but DO NOT help themselves.

This includes the aforementioned “invincible” 20somethings that choose to spend their money at Ikea instead of Aetna. Which is totally fine. It is their money, and they should be given every right to do with it as they please.

This also includes the illegal immigrants that choose to remain illegal immigrants rather than becoming full-fledged citizen and getting into “the system” like the rest of us.

Does he want to force 20somethings to get healthcare? Fine. Enjoy being a socialist.

Does he want to take care of the illegals with his own money? Fine. There are plenty of churches along the Rio Grande that he can donate his money to, and get a tax deduction.

The people that CANNOT help themselves are very very few.

  71. yeah I am about there with my friend, he actually said: Dont you WANT to help those who cant help themselves (when arguing about the health care bill)…what do you do with that?

I’ve had this very conversation with a liberal in my office. My response was that yes, I do want to help people who can’t help themselves, but I don’t want to be forced to do so. He then brought up this “moral imperative” argument, which doesn’t work for me, either. If liberals are all about respecting people’s choices, identities, and beliefs (e.g., alternative lifestyles), liberals cannot justify imposing their morals on anyone else. The “moral imperative” argument demonstrates a fundamental inconsistency in liberal thinking.

The “Jesus would want it” argument doesn’t work for me, either, for a couple of reasons. The first amendment prohibits the establishment of a religion, yet imposing tenets of the moral code of the Judeo-Christian comes perilously close to doing so, IMHO. It’s hard to separate the moral code of Christian and Judaism from the underlying reasons for those beliefs. Also, as I’ve noted before, Christ was the one who said, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and render unto God that which is God’s.” Obligations to the state, such as in the form of taxes to support health care, are distinct obligations that do not meet one’s obligations to God. The state has coercive power behind it to force compliance, whereas the obligations to God are met out of free will, which is where their spiritual meaning and value are derived. They are not interchangeable, and just supporting a charitable religious health care organization won’t satisfy your health-care tax obligations to the government, neither will supporting government health-care initiatives satisfy Christian religious obligations.

  72. I lurv you Reason dont be silly!

  73. There is nothing moral about using the power of the state to take property from one person and give it to another.

  79. “Jesus would want it.”

Jesus would want you taking an active role in taking care of these people. First-hand, like getting out there and caring for them directly.

Not to speak on behalf of Christ, but I do not think that He would be all that impressed with you paying your taxes, assuming that your money goes where it ought to go to “give Him what he wants,” and not bothering to think twice about it or dirty your hands in the process of tending to the poor.

Additionally, I firmly believe that the “system” Christ might “want” was already set in place by Christ himself – the church. Members tithe to the church, and the church uses those funds to maintain, support, and minister to the community.

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again. If Congress feels compelled to be manganamous with my taxpayer money, then they are more than welcome to start tithing 10% of their (taxpayer-furnished) $170K salaries…

    But I won’t break it.

*sigh* Why do knuckleheads challenge their traffic citations by saying “yes, I was (speeding, running the light, whatever the hell they did), but my good reason for doing it was X”?

The jury’s answer is pretty consistently “gee, that’s a pretty good reason but you’re guilty”.

  91. *sigh* Why do knuckleheads challenge their traffic citations by saying “yes, I was (speeding, running the light, whatever the hell they did), but my good reason for doing it was X”?

I thinks it’s a devious, manipulative trick, Dave. Traffic laws are pretty cut and dried – it doesn’t matter why the law is broken, just that it was. The “Admit with explanation” option on most tickets is designed to elicit a confession while giving the driver a false sense of hope that their excuse will have some bearing on enforcement of the law, IMHO. It’s a fucking trick.

Last time I was in, I was part of the “back-up” pool. Which meant I sat around from 8:00 until 2:00 reading my book in an uncomfortable armless chair, before being dismissed.

Time before that, I was actually assigned to a room with a case. We sit in the hall as the lawyers file in, and 20 minutes later, they decide to settle out of court. Done for the day.

Not that I ever expect to make it through jury selection, being the college-educated conservative white male that I am.

  125. As far as I know, the notifications of family members are done in person, maybe Xbrad can put us to some knowledge.

All my casualty notification experience comes from the old days before instant communications. In the old days, when a casualty occurred, the there were steps taken in theater to ensure that the casualty was properly identified, and that status of the casualty was indeed the proper one (ie, KIA, DoW, MIA, wounded, etc.). Then notification went from the theater of operations to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, who then notified the regional Army commander where the next of kin resided. They had a roster of officers (and now, NCOs) who would be tasked to make the actual notification. All notifications were face-to-face.

The problem is, that takes a little time. Most units now cut off internet/phone access when they have a casualty, to give the notification team time to get rolling. I’m unsure how the Family Readiness Group “phone tree” got started. I’ll dig around a little and see what’s up.

  130. I took a long lunch to go work out. I had to compensate for wiserspud making fun of my tiny feet.

  131. What kind of exercises does one do to make their feet grow?

  132. Hello gang!

I am about to eat lunch.

I find the girl on the ACORN sting videos just kind of meh. She is ok, has a fantastic ass, but not that great. I prefer my wimmin to be a little taller and svelte.

  133. HHD just kicked this poat in the mangina.

  134. Can I share something in all earnestness here?

I was raised in a loving home. My parents modeled the finest virtues of Christianity for my siblings and me: Love thy neighbor, treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, don’t covet, steal, lie – all the good stuff. Given that there were nine kids in the house, especially important were lessons having to do with relationships.

    Respect.
    Love.
    Forgive.
    Ignore the little stuff.

As I grew older, I moved around the country and found that not everyone had the same values as I. That wasn’t a really big deal until I moved to the Motor City. Racism is rampant there, and not just between whites and blacks. Muslims and Jews, the six latinos in the city, Chaldeans, Ukes (Ukranians), Serbs, Bosnians – it seemed like everyone harbored distrust and dislike for anyone coming from a different background. Not many would admit their prejudices, but people’s actions spoke louder than their words. The rampant and barely submerged racism is what finally drove me from Detroit. Grand Rapids, where I live now, was like a clean, cool bath at the end of a sticky, hot day under an oppressive desert sun.

Let me preface my next remarks with the following comment. Everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve made friends across all racial and religious boundaries. I’ve taken the lessons my parents taught me and tried – I believe effectively – to apply them to ALL my relationships, not just familial ones. I have a broad spectrum of friends, and I fit within their broad spectrums of friends, too. I love my friends irrespective of their differences from me, and often on account of those very differences. So when I hear prejudicial, racist, bigoted words, when I’m around people who espouse a generic hatred toward all people of a given persuasion, I’m deeply offended and quite often ashamed, because I picture my friends who fit within the targeted group being with me while I’m subjected to that tripe and I wonder what they would thing of me. Thoughts like those cause me to rise to their defense, to speak out. Hate speech hurts people I care deeply about.

With that said, these cause great angst for me:

The constant accusations of racism against me for having opinions that some find objectionable and that have no relation to race are wearing on me. I am starting to feel a very, very visceral dislike for these calumniators, and the intensity of that dislike is starting to bother me a lot, and to worry me, because I’m starting to generalize. I’m really worried that I’m becoming that which I detest. I wasn’t a racist, but I’m starting to wonder if the constant barrage of accusations is molding me into one. I’m vigilant, and I resist the urges to stereotype and generalize (usually easily), but these accusations seem to come from everywhere. It’s overwhelming sometimes.

I can’t believe I’m the only one going through this, and I don’t believe everyone who is experiencing these feelings are as resolute and determined to triumph over them as I am. How’s that for irony, though – that the left is creating the shitty world that they need to justify their claims of racism by invoking that meme as a mantra?

I may have shared too much. It’s definitely too long. I’m going to post it, though, and wait for your STFUs. 🙂

  135. First, STFU.

Second, oh, I’ve got a good link /quote for you. Give me a second.

  136. I read it, Jazz. I hear what you’re saying.

And you aren’t alone. My wife was called an Obama-hating racist by her own mother last week when we asked if she’d babysit the kids while we went to a 9/12 rally…

  137. Squid, at PW today:

The Democratic Party has kept blacks poor and powerless for more than 50 years now. Their relentless resistance to any sort of competitive innovation and their endless bending over for the teacher’s unions have turned urban public schools into pre-prisons, and their ever-growing taxes and regulatory burdens have driven out their local businesses, so that kids wouldn’t have any place to work even if they could get a decent education. In what way is this helpful, except if you wanted to take away people’s options in order to make them dependent on you?

Democrats suck at governing, they suck at economics, they suck at running a business, and they suck at educating. But they’re very, very good at marketing. They’ve spent more time and effort in the last 50 years blaming all of society’s ills on The Rich than they have on governing, and it’s paid off. They’ve managed to convince most people that they really have the best interests of the poor at heart.

But those with eyes to see know that the only thing they’ve done is to increase their own power, and to take care of their own. The urban poor are no better off than they were three generations ago. In fact, they’re worse off, because the Democrats have worked so hard to erode the stabilizing influences of families, churches, and charities, in order to make everyone dependent on the government for their well being. At the same time, they’ve set up a system where it’s impossible to get a good job without a college degree, thereby ensuring that their poorly-educated populace can never escape.

So, we have a picture of a political party which has increased its power at the expense of its constituents, which has promoted class warfare for so long that anyone with something to lose has retreated to friendlier ground, and which has lied unrelentingly to the very people it keeps under its heel.

Democrats treat blacks worse than a rancher treats his cattle. They are an abusive spouse, telling their abused electorate how much they cherish it at the same time they beat any sense of self-worth out of it and keep it so poor and powerless that it has no way to walk away.

Now you tell me, James (and all of your holier-than-thou fellow travelers) — if deeds mean more than words, who are the racists in this country?

    Physician, heal thyself!

I know the difference between political differences and Racism. Those who conflate the two can go fuck themselves.

  138. Thanks, reason and Car in. Intellectually knowing I’m right is one thing. Knowing I’m not alone is another thing completely.

  139. It’s the same tactic unions use. They convince their members that they’re miserable and put upon the evil employer and that they have a right to demand more benefits and pay with every contract negotiation.

Most of those people would probably be quite satisfied with their remuneration if they weren’t told how miserable their lives were by union reps.

  140. And now that no one is reading this poat, I will silently voice my agreement with Uniball that Hannah Giles is really only so-so.

She’s one of those girls that, if she whipped her top off at Mardi Gras, would receive shouts of “put your shirt back on, little boy!”

  141. Aww, Jewstin. Sorry, dude. I didn’t realize HHD was up. I”m not boy-cotting (hahahahah – damn, I’m clever) your thread! 🙂

  142. I’m with you, reason. Actually, she reminds of a girl’s lacrosse or soccer player, too – like her pooter is permanently post-workout sweaty. It’s not a big turn-on for me.

  143. “Intellectually knowing I’m right is one thing. Knowing I’m not alone is another thing completely.”

Save the picture from I Own The World and make it your desktop background. You are far from alone, my fellow American.

  144. Jazz, I addressed the comments in the second link you posted yesterday:

    http://threesurethingsoflife.wordpress.com/2009/09/16/maybe-the-reparations-are-being-allowed-to-show-your-extraordinary-stupidity-while-you-make-rediculous-charges-of-racism/

As for the lefties who demonstrate daily that they ascribe to no code of conduct at all, I do my best to let them know that they are the LAST people I will accept judgement from:

    http://threesurethingsoflife.wordpress.com/2009/06/26/why-does-the-left-care/

  145. “permanently post-workout sweaty”

Threadwin, and no one was here to see it.

  146. Most of those people would probably be quite satisfied with their remuneration if they weren’t told how miserable their lives were by union reps.

Jewstin, I think fomenting discontent is commonplace in our society now, and it permeates every aspect of our lives. Television, for example, is a medium to facilitate envy. Everything is perfect on TV, and regular people naturally want things to be perfect in their own lives – their bodies, their relationships, their property. Inundating an audience year after year with imagery that is, for the most part, beyond the audience’s means to attain inspires envy and covetous thoughts. It inspires discontent. Now, I want to be happy with my life, not constantly reminded of what I don’t have or wishing I had more. So I avoid television as much as possible. I avoid movies, too. I don’t like wanting things I can’t have. It hurts! I think, but I don’t know, that my life is happier for my choice, too. I hope it is.

  147. Everything is perfect on TV, and regular people naturally want things to be perfect in their own lives – their bodies, their relationships, their property.

I had this thought Sunday night as I watched the old musical “Words and Music” with my wife. One of the film shorts on the DVD was on the recording of some of the music. In one scene, the studio chorus was standing in the recording studio and I was struck by how average, even homely some of those singers appeared to be by today’s standards. They probably wouldn’t be permitted to enter the city limits of today’s Hollywood.

  148. You did, reason, and since we’re pariahs for not worshiping at the Panty of Hannah, it’s probably best.

  149. It’s a pretty effective marketing technique since most people are mindless knobs.

  150. They probably wouldn’t be permitted to enter the city limits of today’s Hollywood.

You’ve nailed the crux of why I abhor pop culture. Pop culture is insubstantial, superficial, and devoid of any real meaning for me.

  151. It’s a pretty effective marketing technique since most people are mindless knobs.

The Matrix, Jewstin. Everyone’s plugged in, believing that this imagined reality IS, in fact, real!

  152. *swings in for another peek…yup! she’s still ridin’ the pony…*
