One of the plot elements in Cryptonomicon — not a big one, almost a side note — was that one of the main characters had uploaded a set of detailed instructions for making an SMG from scrap available darn near anywhere to the internet in the interests of obviating gun control by oppressive regimes anywhere and everywhere. Every time I see an “OMG 3D printing must be banned!” story, I think of that.
Cryptonomicon scares me. I have a copy and it is on my bookshelf staring at me RIGHT NOW as if to dare me to pick it up and begin reading.
