Portland has changed a great deal since I grew up there. All that ‘Gentrified Downtown’ just west of the Willamette River was Skid Row, and you did NOT want to be there at night. Now, it’s all hipster bars and craft-shops, cafes and shit.
Heaps of development, nice parks and fountains and shit where it WAS a post industrial wasteland.
They’ve done a terrific job of re-claiming the old district.
The trip out the gorge is beautiful, and, as XBradTC said, the trip down the Pacific Coast Highway is great!
All Oregon beaches are public land and accessible to everyone.
It’s kind of like here, in that within an hour or two, you can be at the mountains, the beach, or the desert.

The west-hills are cool. Bunch of real nice places up there. When I was in HS, we used to rat-race our bikes along Skyline-Drive, from Germantown Road (above the St. Johns Bridge), through Forest Park, into downtown.

The PacNW is a really beautiful part of America. Forests, beaches, mountains, and desert, all co-located! It does, however, have four seasons. Three of them are cool, or cold, and WET! Then, there is July and August.

Tabby cat has a fluid swelling in his lower abdomen that isn’t urine, had a fever, and had suspiciously high blood sugar for not having eaten in 3 days. Right now we think it’s an infection and possible diabetes, but it could also be cancer. He’s lost 7lb since last January (he was obese at 18lb, he’s a rail now), so diabetes is highly likely unless cancer is to blame.
He’s mildly better today after a big antibiotic shot yesterday, actually purred and ate a little bit.
